Selecting a good dog trainer is essential for ensuring your dog gets the guidance they need in a positive and effective way. Here are steps to help you make the right choice:

1. Define Your Goals!
✅Decide what you need help with: obedience training, behavior modification, socialization, or specialized training (e.g., agility, therapy dog certification).
✅Knowing your objectives will help you choose a trainer with the right expertise.

2. Does the trainer participate in a dog sport!
✅Are they active with their own dogs and training and titling their dogs.
✅Do they belong to a training club or group?

3. Ask About Their Experience!
✅Inquire about their experience with your dog’s breed or specific issues.
✅A trainer with a broad range of experience can adapt to different temperaments and challenges.

4. Check References and Reviews
✅Ask for references from previous clients and look for online reviews or testimonials.
✅A good trainer will have a history of satisfied clients and successful outcomes.

5. Consider Their Communication Skills
✅A trainer should be able to clearly explain techniques and involve you in the process.
✅Training is as much about teaching you as it is about training your dog.

6. Ask About Customization
✅Ensure the trainer tailors their approach to your dog’s unique needs and personality.

7. Compare Costs and Availability
✅While cost shouldn’t be the only factor, ensure their services fit your budget and schedule.
✅Be wary of trainers who promise quick fixes, as effective training takes time.

8. Trust Your Instincts
✅If something feels off about a trainer’s methods or demeanor, look elsewhere. You and your dog should both feel comfortable.

Choosing the right trainer can make a significant difference in your dog’s behavior and your relationship with them, so take the time to find someone who aligns with your values and goals. This is our trainer Teresa Shields Cowart and she is always happy to answer your questions and tell you about her 30+ years of experience in training and competing with dogs.

Happy Training!

Thanksgiving can be a stressful time for dogs due to unfamiliar guests, loud noises, and changes in routine. Here are five tips to help keep your dogs calm during the festivities:

1. Create a Safe Space
Designate a quiet room or area where your dog can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. Include their bed, favorite toys, and water to make it a comforting spot. Let guests know this area is off-limits.

2. Exercise Beforehand
Take your dog for a long walk or engage in vigorous play before guests arrive. A tired dog is more likely to relax and stay calm during the gathering.

3. Maintain Their Routine
Stick to your dog’s regular feeding, potty, and exercise schedule as much as possible. Familiar routines provide a sense of security.

4. Use Calming Aids
Consider calming treats, diffusers, or anxiety wraps like a ThunderShirt to help your dog stay relaxed. You can also play soothing music or white noise in their safe space.

5. Monitor Interactions with Guests
Supervise interactions, especially with children or guests unfamiliar with dogs. Educate guests to approach your dog calmly and avoid overwhelming them with too much attention.

Taking these steps can ensure your dog stays happy and stress-free during the holiday celebration.

Not all dogs jump for joy, some jumping can be exploratory, a quest for comfort, or even aggressive. That’s why the solutions to stop your dog from jumping will vary.
