It’s been a little quieter than usual on this page as of late, and that is mostly to do with the busyness of life for our family and farm. Between my full-time professional career, raising our three sons and attending to their academic needs and extracurricular activities, plus spending 2+ hours a day milking, kidding, and maintaining our show dairy goat herd, I’m a bit fried. And show season starts in less than a month . . . (gulp) . . .
An interaction today with an individual on the kitten waitlist that was frustrated that he was still waiting (and became unresponsive when I immediately offered to refund his nominal deposit) left me troubled, but spurred me to clarify a bit about our small, in-home cattery and what we are, and what we are not.
We are not a pet shop. We are not a kitten factory. Our cats are family members, not money makers. Most of our cats have been imported from Europe or transported domestically, yet, our cattery does not make a profit (yes, you read that right). We will not compromise the health and well-being of our cats and kittens to make a sale. All our cats receive great veterinary care and are loved. We do not advertise. Our kittens come with health guarantees in accordance with Maine state law, and as those who know me can attest, I will bend over backwards to make people happy. I pride myself in being ethical and professional in my interactions with others.
Our vet bills have been significant in the past several months due to health issues and other factors. Last month our beloved Sushki suffered a painful uterine infection, and to maintain her long-term health, is now a spayed pet. We currently have only three breeding queens at our cattery, although we do have litters expected in the near future.
This post is not meant to be a sob-story, but simply to be transparent. I have no interest in engaging with people that are rude, mean-spirited, or simply impossible to please. I will continue operating this cattery pet project (pun intended) until I no longer find it fulfilling or rewarding. At that point our cats will “just” be beloved pets.
If anyone has placed a deposit and no longer believes that we are a good fit, please private message me. I am so proud of the beautiful kittens that we have sent out into the world, the happiness they have brought their new families, and that joy and appreciation is what makes this all worthwhile. 🩷
