This is a client dog of mine. He just turned 11
He is reactive to some but not all dogs. This brief video is to show and describe why I recommended a veterinary visit and discussion of pain meds trial
These are not full on assessment vids like I usually do as we were limited by traffic and space but in these brief walks you can see that this dog has a significant bob with his head (denoting effort taken to move forward) and holds his tail to the right side the entire time. This can indicate he is counter balancing due to issues on his left
He is a very large lhasa type dog with significant bowing out of his elbows and carpals as well as has a "turning" gait on his hind legs when he is just walking.
Chondrodysplastic type dogs like many of the brachycephalic dogs as well as dachshunds and bassets often have higher incidence of pain in their joints, backs etc even when younger due to their conformation.
It is important to keep this in mind when assessing for behaviour issues and even just as owners to do as much prevention life long for joint health and fitness.
This worried little monkey is hanging out with Shebang and the gang for a few days. Shiloh is the cutest softest little chi thing
This is what a loose leash can do.
One of the easiest ways to GET that loose leash started with a reactive pup is to actually use a longer leash to get the pressure off and then use reinforcement of position exercises to eventually have them closer to the handler.
Second video is in comments
On a regular leash Willow would basically be kangarooing, pulling really hard and reacting to everything.
I love this for young puppies (so they don't practice pulling) and for reactive dogs.
*Handler needs to manage the leash when in smaller or tighter spaces for safety*
Cala at the end of 2nd session. Sat within four feet of me AND took food from my hand. Check this out compared to her first session!
She will be attending my Stranger Things class and we are looking forward to helping her feel more and more comfortable with people
1st session with Cala. This is in her front lobby. She was unable to work here so we moved upstairs to the condo unit.
Notice the breath huff when she is watching down the hall, tucked tail and tense mouth.
Cala is a very scared girl. Noises, people, etc are all very scary.
The videos in the comments are numbered and there are two photos of the end of the session.
The changes in her behaviour are very subtle, can you see them?
Testing as my last post of this was made a reel even tho it asked me if I wanted it as a post OR a reel
Little Willow is definitely not yet my friend tho she is getting the idea of how to get treats!
She offered this behaviour at one point in the session when it appeared she did decide I was MAYBE safe enough to see what I thought of her little tricks.
Client had not put it on cue so that was the goal but getting her to offer it again took a while! She is very shy!
Great first class for Stranger Things in the bag. Thanks to all my lovely volunteers, two newbies, who are along for the ride.
A brief video from our assessment last week with Dino, who actually took food today on his third round of exposure/retreat!
