Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association is an open-admission shelter in Canastota, New York, that serves more than 1,000 cats and dogs each year.

Wanderers' Rest Humane Association is an open admission shelter dedicated to providing the highest quality care and compassion for the animals entrusted to us while leading our community in creating a more humane society. Wanderers’ Rest accepts unwanted or stray dogs and cats from Madison County, but is open to all Central New Yorkers who wish to adopt a dog or cat. Through its public education p

What did you say?! You wanna adopt me?! Well I'm all ears!!!
Everyone meet Lainey our bull terrier/Border Collie mix! This gorgeous girl just turned a year not too long ago, she is a little shy at first but within minutes she comes around and only wants love! She does need to be the only pet in her home but we can promise you she gives more than enough love to make up for it! She is extremely playful, loves the snow, and as you can see she is extremely photogenic!! Lainey is one of our Pupsicles who is looking for her own furever home, and until January 1st every dog in the shelter is free to adopt! So interested in Lainey or another pup? Put in an application! ❤️‼️‼️We need a HERO!‼️‼️❤️
Everyone we need your help, this handsome man is a 1 year old German Shepherd named Ripple! Ripple unfortunately is in need of a home and FAST! He is currently in a foster home right now but January 1st is the absolute last day he can be there 😔 Ripple being a shepherd doesn't do good here in the kennels so we are trying our best to help and find him a home! If you know anyone interested please have them get ahold of us! Help us keep this boy out of a shelter and keep him in a home instead!!

Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association had a hugely successful year, with the adoption of 315 cats and 192 dogs. We also returned 115 dogs and 1 cat to their happy owners. This reflects a strong community effort to support animal welfare and find loving homes for pets.

As 2024 comes to a close, we wish each and every one of you a safe and healthy New Year. Your support and dedication have made a significant impact on the lives of so many animals. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for all that you do for our community and the furry friends who rely on us. Here's to a wonderful 2025 filled with hope, love, and continued efforts to make a difference!

No one does Golden Hour better then Bonnie 😍❤️
Bonnie is one of our many Popsicles here at the shelter waiting for her furever home! That means her adoption fee is $0!! Bonnie is dog selective meaning she likes some dogs and not others! Cats we don't know about as we don't have a safe way to test here, and she loves every person she meets! If you let her up for a hug you're gonna get some kisses too! 😂 We believe that Bonnie is about a year old and that she is a shepherd mix! This sweet girl like many others is free up until January 1st! ❄️BRRRRR!!❄️Skitter here, the pupsicle squad and I are taking over and we are putting our adoption fees on ice until JANUARY 1st. That means we’ve informed the humans that we’re not interested in the adoption fee, we just need a cozy family to love us! Merry Christmas from our crazy pack to yours! Many dogs spent Christmas day in the shelter today but that is alright because they were spoiled with the best we could give. They were all given the coziest and fluffiest beds, the softest blankets, tons of toys, lots of love, and then to top it all off at the end of the day they all one by one got to come up front and have their own delicious Christmas dinners thanks to Carms Cicero who were gracious enough to provide all the food! Now with full bellies and wagging tails all the shelter pups have made their way back into their kennels, onto their nice cozy beds to sleep and get some rest so that they can all try and find their own furever homes tomorrow ❤️Interested in helping one or maybe even two of our many shelter pups find a home? ✨MERRY CHRISTMAS!✨

🎅🏽For the final day our current long-standing resident Ja’Nebrah got to open the door to the last day, Christmas! We had the honor or starting the box and now gets to finish! She opened up a little stuffed cat! She absolutely loved it! Tossed her new toy all around the community room! 🎅🏽

🧸Ja’Nebrah is such a sweet girl and had a rough start to life! We are all wondering why she is still here! She is roughly 5 years old, spayed and currently in the community room waiting for her furever home! Come on in and meet this sweetheart we promise you won’t be disappointed!🧸

✨It’s Christmas Eve so that means day 24 to the Christmas Advent Calendar!✨

🎄Chris Farley is back again to open up one of the last doors! Opening the door he found a candy cane colored ball! Chris acknowledged it but wanted more attention from us rather than the toy!🎄

🧸Chris is 5 years old and neutered! He is currently in the community room waiting for his furever home! Now if you were to walk into the community room you probably wouldn’t see him right away. He loves to hide on the Tunnel of Love that is slightly pictured in one of the pictures! Even though Chris is a bigger guy he does like to hang out in smaller spaces!🧸

🔔Wow we are getting close! Christmas is right around the corner!! But we still have a few more doors to open! Jolly is back for day 22 and she found a Reindeer stuffed toy! Oh boy did she love it!🔔

🎅🏽Jolly is still here with us! Jolly has been quite jolly lately! Soaking up as much pets as she can and of course eating whatever wet food comes her way! She can also be playful at times! Even though Jolly has come a long way she is still looking for her furever home that will give her the time she needs as she continues to adjust! 🎅🏽

Wanderers Rest got a huge surprise this morning! As we were opening up we found a Christmas present waiting outside for us from Jasper!!! Jasper was a pup we adopted out a few months ago and him and his new family decided to spread some holiday cheer and they gifted us a ton of tennis balls for all the pups still here to enjoy!! Thank you so much Jasper and your family!! We are so so happy that you are doing good! We miss you and are so glad to hear how happy you and your family are now that you have each other!!!

✨Day 21 of the Christmas Advent Calendar!✨

🧸Today for day 21 Felix got to open the door! He found a candy cane spring!🧸

🎅🏽Felix is very new to us. He is 12 years old, neutered and also declawed. Felix is scared and very confused as to why he is here. But behind all that he is still sweet as can be! He will except some head scratches! He apologizes for him not looking his best in the pictures during his adjustment period. He is just waiting for some extra TLC! Felix would do good in a home with other declawed cats and no dogs! Someone give this sweet boy a chance! He is not quite available yet but will be soon! 🎅🏽

Uhh.. I'm back?
Everyone meet Floyd our resident Coonhound! You may recognize him as he was in our shelter a few weeks back, he did go out and into a home but to no fault of his own or the people he had to come back. This poor boy is confused as to why he is back and is really wanting to get out and be in a home, Floyd is roughly a year old and is a very loving and playful dog! He is extremely smart and takes training fast! He is dog friendly! And of course like any hound dog he loves to sing! Interested in meeting Floyd? ✨Day 20 of the Christmas Advent Calendar!✨

🎁Today for day 20 Tazz here got to open the door and found a cat with a present! Tazz appreciated the thought of the gift but he really wanted some pets instead!!🎁

🎄Tazz is 6 years old, neutered, declawed and is back up for adoption! But not to any fault of his own. Tazz got adopted and went into a home with other kitties. Tazz is super cat friendly but unfortunately his new house mates were not such a fan of him. He is such a kind soul and doesn’t deserve to be in constant fear. However with him being in a home we got to learn a little bit more about him! First things first he loves food! Like all foods from dry food to wet food to grilled chicken! He also likes to hang out and observe what’s going on either hanging out on the couch on you or beside you! He also doesn’t mind greeting guest as they come to sit! Tazz is an amazing cat and would be good in a home with other declawed cats and no dogs! Tazz is currently in a foster home but can be brought in for visits!🎄

‼️LOST DOG FOUND‼️
Male shepherd/Rottweiler mix was found yesterday on Damon Rd in New Woodstock NY and brought to the shelter. This poor pup is absolutely terrified and is desperately waiting to go home, if you have any information on an owner please contact the shelter ASAP, or comment below, help us get him home ❤️

This sweet girl is about 2 years old and we believe she is a rat terrier/German pinscher mix! This sweet girl will bring the fun and love into any home being the wild child she is, though she is active and loves to play when all is said and done she does like to curl up next to someone and relax. ✨Double Trouble✨ Meet Ariana Grande and Stevie Nicks! These two girls have been here for a couple of months! They have been patiently for their furever homes in the community room! Stevie is more out going than Ariana! But having another cat really helps Ariana come out of her shell. These girls are not bonded but it would be awesome to see them leave together!
