It's Lending a Flipper Friday where we highlight someone who has gone above and beyond in their efforts to support sea turtle conservation in St. Kitts.

In July, Ms. Mercia Dore called to report hatchlings on the road at Cockleshell Beach. A nest had hatched near the water taxi dock and hatchlings were disoriented due to photopollution in the area and headed into the road, parking lot, and being consumed by other animals. SKSTMN Hotline volunteers Nickhail, Chloe, Jessica, and Alexandra responded and headed to the beach. They searched the parking lot and the beach and were able to collect 11 disoriented hatchlings that had wandered towards artificial light sources on the roadside. The rescued hatchlings were taken to a dark beach where photopollution was not an issue and were released safely.

Thank you Ms. Dore for reporting! Your efforts resulted in the rescue of 11 critically endangered hawksbills that we hope to see back again as adults in 40 years!

If you see a turtle in distress or would like to report a sea turtle activity in St. Kitts please call the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Hotline at (869) 764-6664 and if in Nevis the Nevis Sea Turtle Hotline at (869) 665-1814.
