Having company over can be an exciting (and mildly stressful) experience, especially if you have a pup who may not know the rules of polite behavior!
Try giving your pup a few Composure calming supplements about an hour before your friends appear. Composure is a safe, fast-acting calming supplement that helps dogs better handle the stress of gatherings.
Some appropriately dosed Composure chews can make a difference in containing your furry child's excitement vibrations. Help encourage him toward that affectionate lean.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to speak about self-control. In case you missed the webinar you can find it here.

If you want a quick summary, these might be some helpful points to remember about it.
Self-control is difficult. It's hard for people as well as dogs. There is a fine line between boring and easy, and too difficult for success. If at any particular moment you're feeling like you or your dog’s self-control is not quite good enough take a breath and remember progress is never linear.
It’s hard to stick to a diet when your fridge is filled with cake, and you had a miserable day at work. On the other side, it’s easier when you have a half-day and no meetings to pretend enthusiasm for. It’s much harder for your dog to maintain self-control when there are triggers everywhere.

Not pointing fingers lol. I tell Vista No sometimes as well.
Am I realistically going to find all the ways I say No, and come up with an alternative solution today? Not likely.
When I find myself saying NO I try to point to the moment where I could have said YES and do better in the future.

Good afternoon! After a long hiatus from social media, I’m happy to say that I’m back. I’m excited to bring everyone more helpful content! Here is what I’ve been working on for the past few months.
New Home New Office! Over the summer, my wife and I bought our first house. After purchasing, we got to work painting the ENTIRE interior, installing a tub, and creating an office with the best view from an inefficient and disproportionate laundry room.
In May, The APDT created a Diversity Equity and Inclusion task force. When they asked me to join, I was proud to say yes right away. As a person of color and a dog trainer, I want to make trustworthy dog information available as widely as possible. Joining the APDT DEI task force allows me to work toward this goal with a more significant impact. So far, we have distributed a member survey and made some important discoveries about the population and beliefs of the APDT as an ecosystem. We also contributed questions that helped decide the next round of APDT board members. I understand now that this work is a marathon, not a sprint.
If you’re in Philly, then you know probably know about the Wissahickon. We have been coming to the white trail with Vista for several years, and our new house is within walking distance of the trailhead. A dream come true! Vista wholeheartedly agreed; she was ecstatic; in her eyes, we moved to disneyland. With her favorite location so close, we had to reteach her how to approach the Wissahickon hikes. Before, when we could only come twice a week, we let her run full sprint through most of the hike. Now we need her to approach with serenity, agency, and on-leash often. It took a little while, but we have developed a new system for everyone to have a wonderful walk from door to door.  I’ll have more on what we did a bit later and how you can create an excellent hiking system for your dog.
I entered a partnership with Vetriscience. Known for supplements and chews, Vetriscience takes pride in curating the highest quality products from the best ingredients. I believe in the Vetriscience composure chews and have been recommending them for low-intensity anxiety for several years already.

“With freedom comes responsibility.”

Vista often walks in the Wissahickon off-leash. We trust that when we call her, she will come back. On rare occasions, she has neither the physical capacity nor the mental capacity to handle the freedom of being off-leash. When that happens, we take her on a 30 foot Long Leash.
Vista has very high expectations placed on her. But it's also essential that we have fair expectations for her. It would not be appropriate for my wife and I to expect Vista to maintain a reliable ASAP Out-Of-Sight recall after being mentally and physically exhausted in a new way for several weeks beforehand(We've been house hunting). Expecting her to uphold that recall after a new level of sustained challenge (and subsequent exhaustion) would be setting her up to FAIL.
When your dog can't handle the responsibility of freedom, give them less opportunity to make mistakes, more opportunity to be successful with better parameters.
How successful your dog is depends on how you define success.👍
Some other ways in which you can make it easier for your dog by limiting their responsibilities of freedom might be:
Using baby gates to limit access to tempting counters.🖤
Giving puppies rest time in the crate when they get overly tired( before the biting starts!)
Scheduled Crate times to help reduce accidents around the house.
Separating sibling dogs when their play begins to get out of control.

Vista has a cue that we call "Tuck." Tuck means to curl up as best as she can under Karen's chair. Vista might Tuck in scenarios such as meals, appointments, transit, etc.
Vista is VERY committed to her tuck. She prefers to tuck in any situation in which she fits.
Vista is choosing a very wonderful tuck substitute. Because there is no room currently under Karen's chair Vista is doing the next best thing!
She also has a silly habit of using things as a pillow for her head. This unconventional tuck comes with a bonus headrest!
I love seeing moments of clever problem solving!
