So you want a Spaniel?
Letās go through some a Spaniel may not be for you ifā¦
1. You enjoy your personal space. Spaniels tend to like to live around your neck like some sort of Spaniel scarf. As a breed we have bred them to be highly social and a lot of them would choose to be with us all day if they could, and yes that includes joining you in the showerā¦ yes if you get up they need to follow you, no you absolutely cannot sneak that biscuit without them noticing, and they do not want to share it either. First rule of Spaniels. What you eat is theirs, what you drop on the floor is theirs, what they donāt want is yours š
2. You like a clean dog. A lot of Spaniels love nothing more than diving through muddy water, the dirtier and more stagnant the better. Rolling in delightful natural fragrancesā¦ and they possess a fine tuned skill of finding the only puddle in the whole fieldā¦ and often they absolutely do not appreciate your lavender scented bath, preferring eau de fox poo thank you very much. But they really do appreciate your cream leather seats or car interiorā¦
3. You want a daily short wonder around the block. Now some Spaniels absolutely can do this, but Spaniels and yes even Show Cockers and Cockapoos are working breeds. They need to use their brain and nose, and they need to work on their walks. That doesnāt have to be in a shoot necessarily but they do need their breed specific needs met. If not often you will get destructive frustrated based behaviours emerge.
4. You donāt want a challenge. Spaniels are hugely trainable and eager to please, but they can be challenging. They are a busy working breed that has been bred to flush birds. They often can have quite a high chase drive and can struggle to settle and switch off . Like everything they absolutely can learn these skills but it takes time. A lot more time than people expect often.
5. You want a quiet dog. Spaniels often can be quite vocal especially when fomo sets in and they sing the song of their people at full volume, or when that pigeon dares to land on a fence three streets away, or you go over that third speed bump that tells them you have arrived at your destination š
On a serious note, Spaniels and Spaniel crosses are incredible dogs (I may of course be a little biased) but they require a lot of input, but in turn give a huge amount back.
If you are owned by a Spaniel I would love to hear your thoughts. What can you not do without them joining you? š

I meant to share this photo over Christmas but meet Gabi and Rafi. They are two of my lovely zoom clients as they are not local. We have been working with them on recall and improving connection outside on a walk, a big one for Spaniels. As is often the case if you have more than one Spaniel we have started by working with them Seperately before bringing them together. Their owner is working really hard and itās showing, Seperately they are much calmer and engaged on a walk, recall is going well and they are able to have some off lead time in some places. They are now ready to start learning how to go out the house calmly together. A lot of the time the calmer you leave the house the more likely recall, lead walking etc becomes. Their dog Walker is also noticing the difference now as per the below update sent to their owner š
As a side note I do have some rare 1-1 training availability if you are either local to me or live further away and want some specialist spaniel support š
23/01/2025
Itās always so humbling and lovely when people take the time to leave a review.
I work with a lot of Spaniels via zoom from all over the world, people understandably sometimes are a bit unsure but it often works really well, and people are always super welcome to travel to me to work together to.
These guys put loades of work in and have done so well, they are off to continue the work with an in person gundog trainer near them to as this boy needs to work which is great. I am always so happy to work with other professionals, and help support someoneās journey ā¤ļø
If you are looking for 1-1 help with your Spaniel, I may have a little availability so do message me for a chat. As always I take on a limited amount of 1-1 clients so I can provide a high level of Spaniel support š

So proud of these boys ā¤ļø
They are busy busy Spaniels and like a lot of Spaniels struggle to settle in exciting places such as pubs with tasty food, and struggle to not to bark with frustration when humans donāt share tasty food constantly or spend all their time giving them attention š
By far one of the biggest things I am asked when it comes to Spaniels is where is the off switch, though some of the off switches may appear to have malfunctioned š you can absolutely teach calmness, but equally still have Spaniel crazyness out and about which is how we love them.
With these boys I actually didnāt use food much at all to teach this as the food blew their mind. And sometimes I find with Spaniels then they do their best ever fake calmness/coiled spring ready to pounce/launch onto my head impression when treats are present for settle.
Many more pub dinners for homework for these lovely clients. See Iām a very nice behaviour pro š š·

A very very belated happy new year from me Bailey and Albie, And I hope you all had a lovely Christmas! Just to clarify I absolutely do not still have a tree up š
I have been quiet on here and the truth is the juggle is hard! Running a buisness and having a young baby is absolutely not the easiest and Iāve been driving myself crazy trying to find some sort of balance the last few months.
Iāve come to realise there is no perfect balance and you canāt do it all, and thatās absolutely the same for training your Spaniel to. Reduce the pressure focus on your priorities and enjoy the wild ride š
I remember writing the preparing your Spaniel for a baby blog before Albie arrived and all the things I was going to do with Bailey and Kobie. Then we suddenly lost Kobie, nearly suddenly lost Bailey had rehab with him for several months while having a newborn and I will be completly honest since Bailey has recovered he doesnāt get super regular training and some days even walks can be tricky so if youāre in a similar position of dog and mum guilt I get it but be kind to yourself. You are still doing an amazing job.
I can absolutely see areas with Bailey that need a bit of focus again, but equally heās just managed so well with every change recently and is doing so many amazing things. Itās so easy in life and with our Spaniels to constantly focus on what needs improving, what do I need to do better. But sometimes we need to slow down breathe and just go with it, and that really is ok to do.
This time of year you will see so many do this do that on social media. Achieve this achieve that. Stop your dog barking in just one hour. And if thatās what you want to do cool, but sometimes just take the time to reflect pause and admire how far you and your dog have come and that sometimes it isnāt about doing it all itās just about being present with them and enjoying the little moments

Juggling!
On my recent posts quite a couple of people commented that they only do this, and only do that.
That they think their Spaniel doesnāt get enough, that they wish they could give more.
That they feel they are always juggling to give their Spaniel everything they need.
Well sometimes I think regardless of all the juggling in the world sometimes you can still feel youāre not doing enough.
Today I had to move clients as this little monkey isnāt feeling 100 % thank you so much for all my clients for their understanding, and for their patience with me, itās so appreciated ā¤ļø
Albie is now 7 months old, heās a cheeky happy, busy busy boy, heās started to crawl and he wants to walk everywhere. Maybe part Spaniel energy š
Bailey is absolutely amazing with him and they have a lovely friendship, but Bailey definately gets less from me than he did before, regardless of my intentions. I can definately see areas we need to focus on a little more, but at the moment we are just enjoying lots of cuddles and toast crusts š
Iām not sure Iāve ever felt Iām juggling more quite than at the moment, Iāve been attempting to reply to the same email about 5763 times today š
The point of this post is sometimes we canāt juggle it all, we donāt have it all balanced out with our dogs or with ourselves at times . I know I certainly do not currently and thatās ok. We can only try our best, and our best is good enough ā¤ļø
12/11/2024
I apologise but..
I know they should not do this..
Iām afraid he sleeps in my bed...
Sometimes I even give her some of my food...
I know you may tell me off for this...
Itās probably the completely wrong thing...
All of the above are commonly said to me. And here is the thing, if you want your Spaniel to sleep on or in your bed thatās cool with me, if not that is also cool, if you want to give your Spaniel some āhumanā food thatās fine, if not also fine. If your Spaniel does not behave 100% all the time that is also absolutely fine, unless they are a Spaniel robot I would not expect them to. So please donāt worry š
Iām here to help and support not to judge you, or tell you youāre doing it all wrong. Iām not going to shout at you and tell you your dog must be perfect. What is perfect anyways?! Perfect is whatever is perfect to you. Iām also not going to promise you super quick fixes, change often takes time.
Never feel worried about speaking to a professional because of what you āthinkā youāre doing wrong, because I bet you youāre doing so much right š
And yes Bailey loves sharing some toast, Kobie used to love eating all the toast š Albie now tries to eat toast š How life changes
So share the toast, cuddle on the bed if you want to and focus on absolutely everything youāre doing right ā¤ļø

Today when out for a walk I watched a guy walk his young Vizsla.
The vizsla was absolutely loving the pigeons, she was just standing still pointing at them. Not moving frozen with her paw slightly off the ground. For this dog she was getting absolutely everything she needed on that walk, it wasnāt to race around, walk miles, chase a ball etc Iām sure she would have loved that as well, but it was simply to be given a chance to do what her genetics were telling her to do.
And what was lovely is her owner was allowing her to do so, she wasnāt causing any stress to the pigeons. I donāt think they cared about her in the slightest! And yes it wasnāt exactly a quick walk but for that dog it was absolutely what intrinsically was most rewarding to her at that moment.
Our dogs need outlets for their natural behaviours.
Spaniels need to sniff.
They often need to learn to hunt with you unless you want a self employed Spaniel which people usually donāt š
They often want to and need to carry and parade items in their mouth, socks often being a favourite! some times it takes a little bit of work to teach them to give the item back š
They a lot of the time do want to flush out the birds, we have to teach them the steadiness.
They often want to be with us, we have bred them and dogs to want human companionship.
So next time you are wondering what can you train your Spaniel? How can you interact with them, are feeling frustrated with them. look at how you can provide outlets for their natural needs.
š¾ Scatter a trail of treats in the hedge and send them to search
š¾ teach them to fetch your socks and post
š¾ Hide dummies and scented items for them to find on their walk
š¾ Spend some time giving them a cuddle
š¾ go on a walk where they can just have their nose on the floor. We often call this a sniffari and it can be even more tiring than them running around a field.
š¾ Learn some basic fun gundog training
I know with Bailey I certainly need to do more of this, with the best will in the world heās had less time from me since having Albie.
But itās not always hours of times they need, itās time doing the right stuff.
What do you do with your Spaniel? Iād love to know š

Meet Neville ā¤ļø
He reminds me of Dug from up ā¤ļø
He isnāt local to me so we are working via zoom. Neville is a happy gorgeous young boy who wants to be best friends with every dog, and can struggle listening on a walk as heās just so excited by life, which is pretty typical with Spaniels and Spaniel Crosses.
We absolutely still want him to love life and his friends but we are just helping him learn that his lovely humans are also lots of fun.
Iām loving working with him and his wonderful owners, and itās lovely to already see and hear the progress with him.
If youāre not local to me but need some support via zoom I would love to help you.
I am aware I have been a bit quiet on here, and maybe not quite as visible, Iāve very much been learning to juggle human mum responsibilities , running a successful buisness and getting my sleep deprived brain to function again š
But if you need help and support with your Spaniel or Spaniel cross do just reach out x

Trigger stacking!
When it all gets a bit too much!
After the last few nights of fireworks you may find your dog is still wound up.
š¶ They may have reacted at a dog which seems out of character for them.
š¶ They may be barking like crazy at a car door shutting or any little noise when normally they wouldnāt care.
š¶ They may just be really tired.
š¶ Or a bit manic!
Itās a bit like you not waking up on your alarm, your computer not starting, being late for work, having no coffee and then realising your low on petrol! It all happening at once is going to wind you up pretty quickly! And you may be more likely to snap.
Or someone taking that last piece of cake you want in the queue! When youāre really hungry and craving all the cake!
So if your dog does seem a bit stressy still, donāt panic they may just need some time to chill and decompress.
For some dogs that can be having a quiet chilled day, like we may book a spa break to unwind. For some it can be a charge around with their friends, like we may go for a good run.
Stress/adrenaline levels can take a little while to come back down after events, those events can both be scary for your dog and also exciting.
So if your dog seems a little wound up , take some time out, enjoy some quieter walks, a good play session if they want to play book a secure field and let them be a crazy Spaniel or just simply enjoy cuddles on the sofa and donāt ask too much from them š
How have your dogs been with the fireworks? š

Today would have been Kobies 11th birthday.
We lost him suddenly this year in the space of a few hours to aggressive undiagnosed cancer, the day before he had been running around a field with me.
Life and walks are a lot different since, and they are less complex. Kobie was a complex boy. But I often miss those moments when he was driving me insane, shouting at absolutely nothing and challenging anything Iāve ever been taught.
Itās quite amazing how many Spaniels heās allowed me to help and support across the world. No magic promises, no gurantee to be able to fix the behaviours, just helping their owners to understand and speak Kobieās version of Spaniel which regularly made 0 sense š
So please say happy birthday to the original Spaniel Guru, the one who helped normalise itās ok to not be a ānormal dogā
and actually there is something pretty special about that ā¤ļøš¾š

It was very lovely to recieve this ā¤ļø I am always honoured to receive awards, itās very humbling and I hugely appreciate it, and those of you who recommend me thank you ā¤ļø
Itās even more lovely to get this while I have been away from the business on maternity. After a very rough few months with losing Kobie suddenly who is the whole reason this page even exists, Baileys emergency surgery, a complex recovery after Albie. Itās great to get some positive news š„
I did find it quite funny when it arrived I was in the middle of sterilising bottles and sorting nappies out hence the pic. And at the same time as that I was replying to an email.
Iām learning to juggle at the moment, some days that goes well others are interesting! Iām slowly stepping back into the business, and equally Iām learning to be a human as well as a Spaniel mum š Sleep is also at times interesting! So itās really nice to still be recognised when some days I wonder if I make any sense anymore or if my brain still works š . Thanks as always for the support guys ā¤ļøš¾š„

Bailey update with the wonderful Leaps & Hounds veterinary physiotherapy who I couldnāt recommend enough ā¤ļø
Bailey update thank you all so much for your super kind messages and comments. I will reply but juggling Bailey full time at the moment and a 4 week old baby is interesting!Incredibly Bailey is back home with us, he was stressed at the vets understandably and took a while to calm down when home but has now settled well, though is a bit confused why he is in a pen. The vet staff are amazed at his physical recovery considering he couldnāt stand or walk a few days ago.Heās started taking a few steps and can weight gain. Pen rest for the next 6-8 weeks, thank you for those who suggested that instead of crate that was my thoughts to, but his small steps are huge steps for this early on ā¤ļøMy advice always trust your gut when it comes to your dogs, in the space of an hour a few days ago we went from walking to not walking, and we pushed for things quickly with the support of our lovely local vets leading to emergency spinal surgery with a specialist. Iām confident he will be zooming around again in time when he learns how to use his body properly again. The resilience of spaniels that tail hasnāt stopped wagging since we came home ā¤ļø
On my pre recorded Spaniel zero to hero recall course I talk about a lot of things, including the different whistle cues you can teach them. Here I am using the hunt whistle when Bailey is on strong scent, this has taken time. The course isnāt a quick fix, none of my training is, you have to put in the time and work with your dog, but itās absolutely possible to improve your Spanielās recall. The offer on the course finishes today, you keep access to it for life and if your new to working with me, you also get 2 months free access to my spaniel inner circle membership which is kind of like Netflix for Spaniel owners! Just message me for any information :)
One of the big thing I talk about in my recall course is relationship. Relationship is absolutely fundamental to recall. If you want to learn more send me a message ā¤ļø
Recall ā¤ļø
One of the things I talk about in my recall course is how to teach a recall to the whistle, as itās a whole process. Here is Sylvie in Switzerland acing just that.
Remember you can save Ā£300 currently on my course but that wonāt be for long so do comment below or message me if you want the details to join, and letās get you off lead walks again :)

Welcome to Pawsitively Pawsome Pups Training and Behaviour
My name is Hannah, Iām a dog behaviour consultant covering Royal Leamington Spa, Warwick, Kenilworthā¦ In fact much of the wider area of Warwickshire and sometimes, much further afield. I am owned by two cheeky cocker spaniels, Kobie who is 4 and Bailey who is 2. It was these two, especially Kobie, who were instrumental in my career to becoming a dog trainer and behavioural consultant.
Kobie came to me as a poorly puppy, he wasnāt comfortable in social situations, he was constantly worried and barked at most things. He also hated being by himself. I knew I wanted to help him, I started researching online and found so much informationā¦ In fact too much information, I didnāt know where to start. So I got to know some local trainers and with my degree in Human Psychology, which has some similarities with dog behaviour, I started making progress with him.
Working with him on his issues, and helping him understand that the world is not a scary place has been a very rewarding journey, and it prompted me to set up Pawsitively Pawsome Pups Training and Behaviour. My mission is to help other people understand their dog and to make their life as āPawsomeā as possible.
So I became a fully qualified dog trainer with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT) and Absolute Dogs. I got myself first aid qualified and fully insured, my passion for this career sees me attending various courses to stay up to date and furthering my knowledge, too many courses to list!
I also support the fantastic charity āSpaniel Assist Rescue and Rehomingā as their behavioural advisor. This means I support them at their charity events providing training demonstrations and answering questions, I also provide guidance and advice for their fosterers and adopters.
At Pawsitively Pawsome Pups Training and Behaviour, I specialise in monthly support packages and provide my clients with ongoing support. This means I wonāt give you a training manual and leave you to it, Iāll get to know you as the owner, as well as your dog, really well.
My training approach is unique to you. My monthly support packages are bespoke to your situation and your dogās needs. If we need to get your dog used to travelling on a train, we can do that, if we need to go to a cafe to help your dog learn to settle, we can do that too, and we can also eat cake while we are there, if you insist! After an initial free phone call that I offer to understand your dogās needs, I can work on a tailored plan for you.
Seeing owners cry (in a good way) at their dogs progress, is a joy and itās a complete privilege to watch a puppy at 8 weeks old, who is just finding their feet in the world, turn into a confident and well rounded adult dog.
In the rare case that I may not be able to help you, I will refer you to someone with relevant experience, that is part of the ethical code I abide by, and I am lucky to know and be supported by experts in various fields in the local area and across the country.
At Pawsitively Pawsome Pups Training and Behaviour, I try to support the wider dog owner community via my page, where I provide you with handy dog training advice and tips. I partner with various dog-friendly organisations in Warwickshire to bring support and advice to you. I also host a number of training events throughout the year, which is a great opportunity for you to learn the fun side of dog training and make some new friends too.
If youāre looking to get started with dog training, drop me a message to book in a chat to see how I can help your best friend reach their full pawtential!
I hope you find my page useful and I look forward to working with you and your pup soon.
