Well behaved pups look different for everyone, and that's ok!

Some would look at my dogs on the couch and shake their heads. I take pictures because it's cute 😘

Having a well behaved pup is all about having a set of rules and expectations that work best for YOU and YOUR PUP.

It's about teaching your pup what you expect from them, and giving them the space to learn that in a positive way.

Never judge your dog based on others, figure out what a well behaved pup means to YOU, and then build from there.

What does a well behaved pup look like for you?

🐾 TRAINING TIP 🐾

Make training fun!

Make sure training is fun for everyone involved (especially your pup)

The more fun it is, the more they will want to do it, the more they will learn!

A lot of good manners can be taught through simple fun games! 😊

And the best part is you can teach a LOT through a quick 5 minute game that will leave both you and your pup happy and wanting more.

Not sure where to start or what games to play with your pup?

I have something exciting coming soon that will help you figure out just that!

Send me a DM saying GAMES and I'll make sure you're the first know more info as it comes out!

I believe that every dog deserves a chance to show what they are capable of.

Most "misbehaving" dogs are really just dogs that are acting in the only way they know how, and have never been properly taught the "rules" of how they are expected to behave.

They have no idea why they are being yelled at, and even less of an idea of what they should be doing instead.

As dog owners it is our job to decide what behaviour we want to see from our pups, and then work with them to teach them HOW to do the things that we WANT them to do.

Not to punish the undesirable behaviour, and leaving the dog with no clear idea of what they should be doing instead.

Take the time to show your dog what you DO want, and watch the other behaviour start to disappear.

So, let me ask you this, what is one behaviour your pup has that you don't love, and what is something you can teach them to do -instead-!?

Meet Loki 🐾

We've finally come up with a name for our new little pack member.

Naming is always so difficult for me 😅 It's something that I'm going to be saying for the next 12+ years.

My husband came up with this one, because we are big marvel fans, and also because this little guy is already proving to be a mischievous little brother.

Hoping naming him after the god of mischief isn't going to come back a bite me 😅

How did you come up with the name for your pup?

Looking for name ideas!

We've been bouncing some names around and have a couple that might work but I thought I'd reach out and ask here to see if there are any good name ideas I've missed.

Drop your suggestions 👇 and lets stop calling this handsome dude "puppy" 😅

When we get a dog we are making a commitment to care for them for their entire lives.

While the time they bless us with may seem short on our end, to them it's all they know.

We owe it to these amazing creatures to ensure that we give them the best lives possible.

Including them as much as we can, doing activities with them that they love, and giving them just as much love and companionship that they give us. (or at least we can try 💕🐾)

For my dogs personally that means playing agility in the yard, going for long walks where they can sniff as much as the want, going camping, and lots of enrichment and games to help engage their brain and make life fun.

Your dog doesn't need a professional trainer: it needs you!

I know that sounds counter-intuitive, because I'm a dog trainer 😉 but hear me out!

You're with your dog every day. You know what results you want to get, and your dog is going to learn from your actions, whether you are actively training them or not.

One of my mentors once said...

"Learning is happening all of the time, you might as well be a part of it".

And it's been proven time and again that the most effective training happens in little moments throughout our day, NOT during an hour long class once a week.

You are your dog's best trainer.

All you need is some basic knowledge, like:

◾The different way dogs learn

◾How to communicate clearly with your dog

◾How to personalize training to your specific dog

(Psst! These are all covered in my Foundations course!)

You don't need a professional trainer to teach your dog - you need a professional trainer to teach YOU.

You got the rest!

DM me or drop a "foundations" down below to see if this online course is a good fit for you!

You're in this for the long haul. Most people agree that when you get a dog you are signing up for a 10+ year (hopefully much longer) commitment to care for that animal.

Well guess what, training is part of that care. And it's YOUR responsibility as an owner.

Training isn't a one-and-done kind of deal. You don't do 6 weeks of puppy classes and go "perfect, he's trained. That's done".

Learning is happening every single day with our dogs. Either the behaviours we want are getting better, or they are slowly slipping if they aren't being practiced and reinforced.

When that happens, those undesirable behaviours start to come up, seemingly out of nowhere.

Once your dog has that initial learning, keeping up with it isn't hard ... but it should be done!

My sheltie (pictured above) lived to 14 years old. And rarely a day went by that we didn't do some sort of training top up.

Luckily training through games makes it fun and quick!

So take a moment and think about your dog. Have you topped up their learning lately? Have you reinforced a behaviour that they haven't done in a while?

Can they still do it if you ask?

Work fun little training sessions into your everyday life with your pup! Not only will it keep their manners strong, but it will also deepen the bond you both have.

Share below your favourite way to top up your dogs learning👇

What if I told you that the quality of our dogs lives is directly related to how well behaved they are?

Why do manners matter, as long as they can function well enough at home?

I don't know about you, but my dogs are part of my family. When I plan camping trips, vacations, outings, ect. they are often included in the plans.

It's a little harder with 2, but when it was just my sheltie Zeppelin, he went EVERYWHERE with us.

That small pup went with me to every single province in Canada (and some states). We went on more adventures and made amazing memories together.

But this isn't always the case... I've seen the other side.

When we have a dog who isn't that well behaved, who doesn't adapt well to new places and new situations, who gets too excited, too overwhelmed, too fearful, we end up with a dog who gets left behind a lot.

Not taking your dog everywhere with you is ok, but when you WANT to take them out, WANT to take them camping, or hiking, or to the park, or to a local patio for lunch, but just can't because they don't have the behaviour to allow it... it becomes stressful.

You get stressed out if you try to take them for fear of what they will do or how they will act. They feed off your fear and end up barking, or lunging, or running off. Jumping up on someone or pacing constantly instead of laying quietly at your feet.

You're stressed and embarrassed, so next time your pup is left at home.

They get to do less with you, experience less, and in worst case scenarios, they are left alone more and more, with less and less to do.

Not much of a life, is it?

Certainly not the one you wanted when you got your pup, right?

This is why building basic manners is so important!

Giving them the skills they need to behave in all sorts of situations opens up all sorts of opportunities to include our dogs in our lives.

So think about it. Are there times you would love to take your pup somewhere, or include them, but the idea of it right now just stresses you out? Share with me below.

And if so, it's time to think about the manners you can teach them now, to make that thing possible in the future ❤

Distractions are EVERYWHERE in our dogs lives.

They're the other dog that they bark and lunge at on leash. The kid riding by on the bike. The squirrel they want to chase, the dog they want to play with. Often those distractions turn our dog into an over excited or over reactive mess that no longer listens.

So what are we supposed to do? How do we show them that all those distractions are really none of their business?

In this episode you'll hear:

◼️The #1 way to teach your dog to start ignoring those distractions
◼️The exact 3 step process to marking distractions

The more physical exercise they get to try and "tired them out", the more stamina they build up, the longer it actually takes to tired them out.

Do you ever feel like you just aren't getting anywhere with your pups training?

Ever feel like they are gaining momentum one day, and the next they are completely back to square one?

Join me this Thursday for a FREE live training.this I'm going to talk about our dogs and rehearsal of behaviour.

We will dive into the concept of how "dogs will do what they have always done", and how behaviours are self-rewarding, and what we can do to prevent rehearsal so our pups can truly learn the new skills we are teaching them.

09/03/2022

When you think about doing a training session with your pup, what comes to mind?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For me, pre-kids, it meant 30 min - 1 hr long lessons at a training facility. Doing group classes, obedience, agility, whatever we were signed up for at the time.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But life looks a lot different now. With 2 young kids, 3 dogs, and all sorts of commitments to juggle, that kind of training plan is absolutely impossible.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But does that mean I don't work with my dogs? No.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Does that mean they don't get the training they need? Nope.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Because one thing I've learned is that long sessions actually have a high chance on burning your pup out. There is a good chance that their ability to take in what they are learning by the end of a 30 min+ session is just used up.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The only way I have been able to do any training with my pups over the last few years is honestly in tiny little sessions here and there, whenever I have a moment.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Got dinner in the oven and have 5 minutes before starting the sides? Run through some commands.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Kid in the bath and have a few moments before they need to get out? Restrained recalls in the hall.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Kids finally asleep and no meetings book for the night? Run through a quick session with each pup.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Honestly, no more than 5 minutes at a time, squeezed in here and there through the day.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And the amazing thing, IT WORKS.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The dogs never burn out because the session are quick a fun, always ending on a good note.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
They happen more often than once a week because they are split up all over the place (much more consistent learning)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The dogs learn just as much (if not more) than they would when I was doing typical classes.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So if you ever think your pup isn't well trained because you just don't have the time, you just can't make the commitment to consistent classes or working for 30 min+ each training session...⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There is another way!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
(Dare I say, a better way)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Short, fun, 5 min or less sessions, squeezed in anywhere and everywhere throughout your day!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Sound like this might work for you and your pup? Let me know below some 5 minute times your could find throughout your day to get in a quick training session! Let's brainstorm together 😊

Have you ever felt like your pup would do anything you ask, only if you have a treat or their favourite toy in your hand??

Do you ever wish your pup would listen to you every time because they WANT to?

Believe it or not, this is actually possible, and the key to this kind of response four your pup is actually your RELATIONSHIP.⁣

In this LIVE training I will go over how our relationship with our dogs directly influences their listening skills, as well as discuss the Relationship Bank Account, which is KEY when it comes to building they type of bond with you pup where they WANT to listen to you, every time.
