Mischief Maple

I’ve been putting off writing this post for months. I apologise for disappearing, but it has been a hard year so far.

For those who don’t know, my dear sweet Maple departed this world earlier in the year. It was sudden, and she declined very quickly following a diagnosis of cancer.

She was the inspiration behind all of my projects so far, along with being the little mascot who tagged along to markets and kept me company during every creative project.

While I’m still unsure of what direction to take Mischief Maple, I still know I have the burning desire to create. While at present, grief and sadness are the primary fuel to the fire for what I’m producing behind the scenes, there is still a whole lot of love as well.

In time, I am sure I will bring new and better products (I still have plenty of stock from when Maple was still here), but lately, I’ve only been able to produce artwork, which I’m sure I’ll share eventually.

Each market, I’ve reassured the quality of my product in terms of what I’ve experienced. With any toy, it always depends on the dog. For testimonial sake, let me share my snippet of evidence.

On the left:
Exhibit A: freshly completed tug - I sell these for $10.

On the right:
Exhibit B: I can’t remember if they had this tug before or after moving house so anywhere from 10-14 months, they’ve had it.

It has been outside 95% the time. I had to fish it out from the corner of the yard under damp dirt and mango leaves. This is the level of “not care” I have (every toy stocktake of the yard, each toy gets assessed for interest and safety). I have 3 border collies. All of which play tug among the group, 3 different techniques, the youngest is a big toy dog. If it’s not buried under leaves, it’s played with.

Also, take note that Aspen pulled a ninja move and stole the OLD tug and ran around like he won the lottery. I’ve been inside 15 minutes and haven’t seen him since. 🤦‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Meet Tigger, he has had his snuffle mat for just under a year and he love it 😍 he uses one of the mini mats with shorter ties- much easier for their lil whiskers 😁

Had a great morning at our first market since 2018! Got to chat a lot of people about their pets and was lucky enough for people to purchase some of our special handmade products ☺️

Something I can share now the recipients have the gift.

I had known I wanted to do an art piece for while and had been toying with many ideas. With covid running rampant, I have only really been going out for work. I also can’t trust postage and stock on things either. I had the opportunity to visit a very empty shopping centre, grabbed the most workable frame I could work with, and figured out the rest from there.

A little nursery piece for some dear friends of mine.

Ive also shared some progress shots to prove I didn’t just wing it 😅

I think this actually needed MORE planning because I had a strict deadline, limited resources, limited time to do any serious experimenting.

Needless to say, I did challenge myself trying to portray the pups through their pawrents’ eyes (but what features I choose might not be what others see). I also decided I like drawing plants, and blindly chose the birth month flower to fill the last square. Luckily for me, it was a daffodil. Something I have not drawn before, and the shapes are different to what i normally go for (the lines felt strange to my hand, so it was hard to keep going, especially because I had to redraw and tweak so many times - thank you neurodiverse brain).

I’m happy with the result. Once I was able to start, I didn’t stop until stupid o’clock, so I was definitely having fun!

Perfectly functioning craft room, but still, taking over the dining table with a new craft piece. 🙄😅

After being inspired by my Mum’s creations at BarMar Creative Notions (Facebook won’t let me link her page 😭).

I have decided to have a crack at “slow stitching”. Finally creating an art piece with our home in mind. It’s going to take a while but 🤞I’ll complete it in the near future!

Hang outs in the craft room. It is very rare that I am without at least one of them being by my side. If they’re not with me, the go to is to check the couch and beds, otherwise they will probably be under the mango tree. 🥭🌳☀️🌙💖

Been just a little bit quiet on here lately… a lot of secret squirrel going on!

We are having a very brief hiatus (only because I don’t have access to anything right now!)
