Eight innocent lives saved before they likely froze to death!
Freezing temperatures... a gas leak... unsocialized puppies... being under a house and crawling over chunks of concrete and broken glass... You never know what you're going to encounter in a day of rescue.
When Kylee, our Pets for Life Specialist, got the call about a mama dog and her puppies being under a house right before this latest cold snap, we knew that we couldn't wait. Did we have open fosters? Nope. Did we have a bunch of staff or volunteers to send to her right then? Nope. But we found a way because eight lives depended on us to do just that. These babies (and possibly even mama) would not have survived the frigid temperatures overnight.
Along with two WAAL volunteers and a PFL client, Kylee assessed the situation and discovered that the mama dog couldn't figure out how to get them out from under the house by herself and even if she could, she had nowhere warm and safe to take them. So, Kylee began the grueling task of pulling each puppy out one by one to safety. It took a while due to all the unsafe debris and the gas leak under the home, and the fact that these puppies had never been touched by human hands before so were understandably terrified. But the WAAL team persevered and all eight lives were soon ensconced in the warmth of the home of the PFL client who had called us.
Our WAAL family stepped up in a big way to take in this family to foster, and we couldn't be more grateful to them. Alas, we were not anticipating taking on another family so quickly. The vet bills, puppy food, and everything in-between add up quickly. We truly need your help to keep doing rescues like this. The need is SO great. We are getting calls and emails daily. We hate having to say no, but if the resources and foster homes aren't there, they aren't there.
We hope this video brings you a sense of joy that this family is now safe. They are now part of our WAAL family so we will ensure that they know nothing b
Update: Captured! Video later.
Wichita, if you’ve heard about the stray pit in Sim Park WAAL is on it and has a trap set. Please avoid the area and DO NOT FEED. The dog has to be hungry to go for the yummies in the trap. We almost had him but he bumped his head on the trap door and it shut, scaring him. We are in a blue Ford Ranger. Please don’t feed.
Pets in Life in Planeview with Santa 2024
🐾Pets for Life! 🐾
You've heard us say this time and time again, but human welfare and animal welfare are very closely linked! Our clients in the Planeview neighborhood aren't just regular citizens to us. Many have become close friends so when we see that their little ones might not have much of a Christmas, our hearts just wouldn't allow us to not help.
For the second year in a row, Santa joined the PFL team and other WAAL staff and volunteers to bring a bit of joy to the Planeview neighborhood! We provided gifts, stockings, and Christmas candy to over 40 low-income families!
We'd like to say a special thank you to Mar & Lennon Dentistry, Smile Connections Family Dental, and local nonprofit, Little Moments- Big Dreams for helping us make this possible! (Please note that NO funds designated for our animal-related programs were used for this program.) The above businesses gave joy to so many kiddos this holiday season!
We are so grateful for our Pets for Life program and all the opportunities we get to meet new people and pets, make friends, and help where we can! You have a few days left if you want to help support this amazing program in our community! Your donation will have DOUBLE the lifechanging impact until December 31st!
💔 Sometimes the best intentions don't result in the best outcomes. 💔
Our welfare team members are often the first to have to witness cruelty and neglect. Some neglect is unintentional for various reasons, but the animals still need our help. This team has to make split second decisions sometimes on whether it would be best to offer owners resources and education or if owner surrender would be best for all involved. In this case, owner surrender was best as the owner just couldn't do what was needed to get these boys healthy again.
These boys have a long road ahead of them. They each need to gain a lot of weight. They have bed sores which must heal, and they need all the standard vetting. They will be with us for quite awhile. Thank goodness for the foster who stepped up to save their lives!
But we'll get them through it. We'll give them a future. Why? Because of YOU! Because of your ongoing support, donations, kindness, and advocacy! YOU all are responsible for the saving of so many lives in our community!
The Craft Stuart Foundation was so impressed with the outcome of our first End of Year donation drive that they've agreed to do it again! They will match (for a second time!) up to $5000 between now and December 31st! For every donation you make, your kindness will have DOUBLE THE IMPACT!

Coffee Cake Kitty
I'm Coffee Cake. When not busy exploring or playing, I enjoy a good cuddle. I'm independent enough to entertain myself, but I'll never say no to a good play session. I'm a bit shy at first but warm up quickly. I use the litterbox like a gentleman and my sweet nature helps me get along with other cats, dogs and children. Adopt me and we can explore our world together! Learn more about me at https://waalrescue.org/adoptable-animal/?aid=7293&cid=18&tid=Cat
12 year old Rain was surrendered when her owner's mental health prohibited her from caring for Rain and her brother, Brittain. She was distraught to say goodbye to them but gave them the greatest gift of love she had, which was to let them go. Rain is an absolute GEM of a dog! Learn about Rain at tinyurl.com/4s8wwnn9
