Dave and Margaret Horn bought Birch Hollow Farm in 1993 where we raised our 2 sons, Dillon and Jesse. BHF was protected from development when we donated a Conservation Easement on the farm by the Agriculture Stewardship Association (ASA). Over the years we have had a variety of animals from dogs and cats to cattle, pheasant and quail. We raise upland game birds every year. Currently, we have 2 bir
d dogs; Blake and Jeter. Blake, a Brittany/English Setter mix, is retired after a successful career pointing and retrieving pheasant and quail. Jeter, an English Setter, is in his prime at 6 years old. Our herd of beef cattle is a mix of Angus, Hereford and Dexter. We call them Hexter and Dangus breeds. They have been cross bred to create a small-framed, low maintenance cattle that are gentle and approachable. The herd is on pasture year round and are fed grass hay from our farm as well as a little grain at various times in their life, especially in winter to help them maintain their body condition while staying warm outside. Cross breeding cattle unleashes the optimum genetic potential by getting the best of each breed. This is called Heterosis and is a well-accepted phenomenon much like with dogs and "mutts" being known for their health and long lives. We specialize in selling small, friendly and manageable cows and calves that make great animals for anyone with even just one or 2 acres of pasture to graze. Our calves are born in sync with nature and green grass in April and May. We use rotational grazing and we always balance our grass needs for cattle with our grass cover needs for wild and upland game birds. We leave some land for Blackbirds, Bobolink and other ground nesters. Along with live animals, we also sell freezer beef in quarters and halves or in custom packs of assorted beef cuts. We love to walk our farm with friends and potential customers so let us know if you want to meet the herd.
