Let’s officially welcome VIOLET to the KPD Service Dogs program! Assuming things go as planned, Violet will be the very first dog that I will be offering to place as a started service dog through my new program. In the next 6-8 months she will be public access trained, learn all her basic obedience, and be ready for task specific training.
I had the opportunity to visit my local humane society to evaluate a few dogs rescued from a breeder hoarding situation and this sweet girl’s temperament blew me away. She has proven to be an amazingly resilient girl who is loving to learn some training games, playing with her new dog friends, and snuggling on the couch.

I’m officially launching my Service Dog program!! This will be a SMALL operation offering started service dog prospects who are fully public access trained and have all their basic skills learned for service work. I will consider successful candidates as “plug and play” dogs (as my mom calls them). They will be ready for specific task training with their new partner! This service makes owner training a whole lot more accessible as many people do not have the schedule or physical ability to train through the baby puppy stages.
The ability to have a dog come with tasks trained is also available at a higher price point.
In this official announcement I want to make sure to say that any dog that goes through my program is welcomed back at literally any time for literally any reason. If a match doesn’t work, clients can count on me finding a new match without needing to pay for it.
All dogs will be health tested (OFAs, PennHIP, and Embark) before being considered ready for placement.
The first candidate to this program is joining the pack very soon, so keep an eye out!!!
Being a brand new program, any and all donations toward the cost of dog upkeep are hugely appreciated. I am extremely hopeful to rally our community and create scholarship opportunities for disabled clients helping to remove a common barrier in getting a service dog. Congratulations to these new Canine Good Citizens and S.T.A.R. Puppy graduates!! Thanks for working with me for the last six weeks and being amazing to your dogs. My biggest passion is seeing people set their dogs up for as much success as possible and I’m so proud of you all for doing just that!

Congratulations to Arlie and his handler for earning their CGC, CGCU, and TKN titles!
Earning titles through the AKC can give you a very tangible measure of what you and your dog have been able to accomplish together. The skills needed to earn these titles are also skills that Service Dogs need to master in order to succeed.
We’ve been working hard this month on refining some behaviors and setting the team up for future training success. It’s been a blast getting to hang out in Florida and I can’t wait to see what else they do.

Hello! I’m Kate Richardson, the founder, owner, operator, and trainer behind Accessible Service Dogs.

In 2004, I got involved in raising guide dog puppies for the blind. This was my first introduction to service dogs and to professional dog training. I was immediately hooked on learning more and more about dog behavior and have been continuing to learn, grow, and teach ever since!

Early into my introduction to service dogs and dog training, I received what would wind up being life-changing medical news. I had to have immediate surgery and have since continued to suffer with chronic pain due to complications. As my health journey continued to get more complicated, I wound up disabled and was in an amazing position to realize that a service dog would be helpful in making my quality of life better. I’m currently raising the puppy that I hope will take over as my third service dog (a chocolate lab named Query) and am also still working with my second service dog (a yellow lab named Survey). My personal journey has inspired me to further my dog training education so that I can help others in the disability community on their own service dog journey.

I currently am certified through and accredited through with hopes to get even more certifications in the coming year! If you have any questions about training your own service dog, I would love to chat with you and see if I could be a good fit on your training journey.

While a client and I were training in the airport this weekend, a person in the security line saw Eevee get momentarily startled by a loud noise made by a suitcase hitting the floor right next to her. She jumped a tiny bit and looked at it and then recovered fully and refocused on her handler. The person in line then decided to say “You can tell that’s a fake service dog by the way it jumped.” No. Dogs aren’t robots and you should always consider that a dog might be in training, experiencing a new situation, having an off day, or is just not a robot. You should always give people the grace of assuming they are having a bad day and just give them space or ask if they need anything. So what should you look for as a fellow service dog handler or concerned patron of a business when it comes to service animals? If the dog is out of control (pulling their handler around everywhere and going up to/touching people or licking merchandise), if the dog is not potty trained (if a handler is not responsive to an accident with thorough clean up/getting the dog out of the establishment), if the dog is not properly groomed (leaving muddy footprints, smelling swampy, or otherwise visibly dirty), or if the dog is otherwise fundamentally altering the experience of other patrons (continuously barking/whining or acting aggressively toward people or other service animals in the store) then you should talk to security or management of the public space. Fake service dogs do put real ones in danger and it is important to educated the public about these dangers! I love to use a Treat and Train to help dogs learn how to settle! What’s your favorite way to work on settling with your pup?

It’s important for service dogs to practice basic skills in a variety of circumstances! We’ve been working hard on Arlie’s leash skills and we got to see it pay off this evening by revisiting walking next to the wheelchair. He did beautifully and we’re looking forward to working on it again in yet another environment! What are your favorite things to change up during training to set your dog up for success?

I have been working with dogs in various different training formats since 2005. My patience, persistence, and love of animals makes me dedicated to setting you and your dog up for success.
