If you want your dog to be engaged with you when there are distractions around, then my best tip is to PLAY with them in places that aren’t just your back yard. Be the most interesting thing around! Turn their work into play. Be spontaneous, random, fun, and look ridiculously child-like to any onlookers. My friend recently said that having this dog is like having a teenage Jason Momoa on my hands, full of confidence and ego because he knows he’s huge and handsome (I didn’t know Jase but I think we can assume he was aware). Well, nothing could be more accurate about Halen right now… But when I see him here front foot hoppin’ because he’s so excited to earn a hula hoop, tongue out and eyes hopeful, I can’t help but love every bit of the confidence I built up which got us here. I do have to crush his spirit a little bit now though in other areas 😂 But hey, we’re working on it! And it’s been cool seeing how much you can encourage that confidence in a dog that you could have just as easily shut down. I’ve learnt so much through the process!

Not only because we’re part of the queer community ourselves, but also because outside of dog training we are youth workers who support teenagers experiencing homelessness. I’ve been doing that for over 8 years, and Halen for his whole life so far. With the job comes a lot of different types of humans from different backgrounds, and they are ALL so wonderful. I learn so much from them, and so does Halen. If we were all the same as each other, life would be way too vanilla. So here’s to diversity of all kinds! My b*tch is gay!
