We could use some donations for our ongoing care of our foster kitties 🙏🏻 Our last big dental surgeries took all the funds we were able to take in and we have none for our routine preventative health visits and any issues that come up. We just had Cassidy, the silly girl pictured who sleeps with face plants like the cats from the Garfield comic, for her yearly exam and a Rabies vaccine. Cassidy deals with chronic feline interstitial cystitis, but is feeling pretty good right now. This condition consists of inflammation of the bladder and causes irritation and spams of the bladder without any infection or crystals in the urine, but includes the presence of blood when flared up and is very uncomfortable. Luckily, her meds are keeping her pretty calm right now and we didn’t need to add anything else to the list. Otherwise her exam was normal.
Cyrus pictured peeking from the indoor part to the outdoor part of the kennel he lives in, had to be seen for an unspecified pain issue that had him off his food. Cyrus is a very nervous cat who doesn’t like to show that he isn’t feeling well, but changes in eating habits are an indication that something is wrong and I take them very seriously around here. A course of anti-inflammatories seemed to help as he began eating normally when he was on them, but once stopped, his appetite issues came back. We then took x-rays to rule out any arthritic changes and they looked great. He has a bit of laxity or looseness in his patellar ligaments, so his knee caps move a bit from side to side, but his knees did not appear inflamed. We think he might have tweaked some soft tissue that needs the anti-inflammatories for a longer period of time and he is doing well on them so far, eating like a champ.
If you would like to contribute anything you can to our vet bills, currently totaling $365.36, we would be so grateful!

Inigo did great with his dental and extractions yesterday!!! Took a couple of sleepy pics in his condo yesterday when he was still wobbly from anesthesia(the last two). He wanted to eat some food right away, no nausea and vomiting. He had 6 teeth pulled and will be good as new soon. Inigo is out and about today and I am so grateful ☺️
Thank you all so much for donating and sharing so far. The last time I asked, I was hoping for another $100 so we could pay at least 1/4 of the estimated $1000.00 plus bill and JB and CF donated a combined $140.00. Thank you!!! The bill ended up being $993.46, so we are on our way to financing this medical care. Can we get another $250.00 going? We will get there in the end 🙏🏻

We said goodbye to Mandie today. We found a mass that was most likely associated with her kidney. I had a feeling we were dealing with cancer as she continued to loose weight even though she was eating well. She was becoming more agitated lately and having a difficult time being comfortable. We made the decision to let her go before it was too terrible for her. Such a hard call to make, but we feel it was the best one for her. Last night she had one on one time with hubby and I and shared a bit of my snack. Some tiny pieces of cheese she has been wanting when she sees me eating it and I normally didn’t let her have and her very favorite treat, which was tortilla chips.
We will miss you Mandie 💔

Can we raise at least $100.00 in 10 days? We funded Lion’s dental and extractions and are now trying to fund Inigo’s dental with extractions. Since I last posted for help, we received another $150.00. I would like to pay at least $250.00 on the day of his surgery scheduled for 3/14. So, if you can help us get to that approximately 25% of the estimated bill (on the low side of the estimate) I can make that payment and impose on our wonderful vet’s office to run a balance awhile longer.
Thank you! 🙏🏻 https://gofund.me/dbf21923

Do you have a warm lap for a senior cat? Mira is your girl if you can make her your one and only. Inside girl, very clean, but doesn’t want to share a home with any other pets. Mira was used to being the only girl in the home of a retired lady. She is looking for a similar situation to settle into again. Message us if you think she might be the lap warmer for you ❤️😻

11 teeth extracted 😬, but she will feel so much better once she is all healed up. Fortunately the bill was on the lower side of her estimate and we were able to pay the full $1187.95 Thanks to you!!!
Unfortunately, that bill ate up our funds and the bank account is near empty. I don’t want to wait any longer to get Inigo in, so I set up his appointment for 3/14 and am hoping we have at least a chunk to put down at the time of his appointment. Any amount that you can pitch in will help. There are multiple ways to donate.

Mira - Available for Adoption!

Mira was born into rescue. We had worked with a lovely couple who would assist in more rescues through the years. They alerted us to a pregnant stray who we took in and she gave birth to Mira and her siblings here. Born 4/25/14 and then adopted in November of the same year to a recently retired lady, Mira had a wonderful home.
Unfortunately, in 2022 we were contacted that Mira had been found and turned into animal control in South Salt Lake, Utah. Piecing together a bit of a story from social media, it looked like Mira and her person had relocated there. Sadly, our messages to cell phone and social media came unanswered and no one came into the shelter looking for Mira. I have a bad feeling something happened to Mira’s lady and possibly a land lord, or someone else in charge of her affairs, might have intentionally turned Mira outside.
Mira weighed almost 20 pounds at the time and being out on her own could have ended very badly for her if she had been out long. She was not an outside cat savvy on the ways of obtaining food and if she had been starving out there, her liver could have gone into failure due to fatty liver disease as the liver is very unhappy in overweight cats who lose too much weight too fast. Cats are carnivores made to eat many small meals of protein during a day. That naturally keeps them lean and without much fat for the liver to work to process. Our happy, inside cats are living their best lives being spoiled, but many people do not know how dangerous being super overweight is for cats. To some, feeding is Love and they want to give food to make their pets happy. Sadly, many pets are left with heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, etc. due to this misplaced affection. Mira was scanned for a microchip and the shelter contacted us, then kept her safe until I could drive out to pick her up.
Luckily, when we had Mira checked out at the vet, running bloodwork to check her organ function, she wasn’t suffering any adverse effects, yet. We set to work on a prescription weight loss diet to carefully take the weight off. That went very well and we were able to change her to an over the counter weight management food.
At her last weight in January, Mira weighed
11 lbs 1 oz. She no longer lays down on her side to scratch on scratching posts. She runs and climbs and can groom herself all over. (She couldn’t reach her back end to clean herself before and had a urine scalded back side when we picked her up).
Mira is a happy, healthy lady. We just had her check up and booster vaccines and she is doing great. She has many years ahead of her now. We Love her here. She does not, however, enjoy other cats, or dogs for that matter.
So, we would Love for Mira to find another home of her own as an only cat. She is open for adoption now to the right home. I have left a new donation box at our vet’s office with a picture of her and some cards I made with her info and our contact number/email.
Mira has a place here forever, if need be, but if you or someone you know are looking for a senior cat and you have no other pets, please contact me and we can set a home visit for you to meet her. Inside only please.

Mandie

Mandie came to us originally in 2014 when she and her sister (Maggie) were dumped at a feral cat colony. Another cat rescuer was monitoring the site at the time and let me know the cats were there. I was working on doing trap neuter return on the colony, but not getting down there (Red Bluff) every day. These two girls showed up one day, tried to get to food and had a heck of a time trying to survive among this colony that didn’t want them there. They were definitely not feral and not family to this group. People often think leaving cats at a group that are being fed is a solution, but these family groups are hard for outsider cats to live with. That’s part of why trap neuter return works to keep more cats from moving into an area.
I took them in and worked on their matted hair coats and their distaste of other cats. The hair coats definitely improved, the attitude towards other cats, not so much. Compounding Maggie’s ability to find a home was a healing spinal/pelvis injury. She was healed enough to be stable, but nerve issues from the injury would send zaps down her back and she would think something was attacking her and spin around to see. If Mandie was in her eye-line, she would run at her thinking Mandie was the culprit. If a person was near, she would bite at them. It became part of her personality that we knew was just her, but a hard thing to expect someone else to be okay with. Maggie passed away the beginning of 2021 when her back issues, having degenerated over time, caused paralysis of her back end. We knew that the depression that then set in was worse for her than the paralysis. When she no longer wanted to show her feisty self, I knew it was time.
After almost three years in rescue, Mandie was adopted in the beginning of 2017. I didn’t hear anything from the adopter when she apparently decided to re-home Mandie on her own in approximately 6/2019. I heard from the amazing lady who took her in after she was given a heads up from one of our long time rescue pals that the picture of the cat she took in looked like a previous foster of ours. She contacted me for any details of Mandie’s medical history and told me that Mandie was very skinny when she was taken in from our original adopter and that a visit to her home from the mobile vet diagnosed hyperthyroidism that Mandie was now being treated for. Hyperthyroidism is very easy to treat with medication, but left untreated will cause the metabolism of a cat to basically run too fast. They are hungry all of the time and will eat like crazy, but still lose weight. Their heart will beat very fast and increase their blood pressure which is hard on their heart and also can cause kidney damage.
Needless to say, I am so grateful Mandie found herself with a wonderful lady willing and able to take such good care of her. I made sure she had all of our contact information and told her to let me know if she ever needed anything. Thankfully, she did just that in 6/2021 when her own health became an issue and she couldn’t physically take care of Mandie anymore. She was now 85!
So Mandie came back and we continued treatment for her hypothyroidism, found that she had arthritis in her spine and began treating her with anti-inflammatories to make her more comfortable and found she still does not like other cats, or dogs for that matter. She comes out for lap time with some other cats and will tolerate them unless they come within smacking distance and then watch out. This 15-16 year old is still feisty.
Mandie is currently a hospice cat now. The better part of the last year, she has been having appetite issues and weight loss. We have had blood work done multiple times, x-rays and ultrasound and couldn’t find a cause. We tried so many different foods to increase her appetite, including a high calorie recovery diet. Finally we are feeding her Sheba which she is eating and loving, but now even with eating she can’t keep weight on. I suspect we may be dealing with something cancerous in her gi tract. We are giving her whatever she wants and needs and letting her live her life knowing that she will let me know when it is time to let her go.
We make lifetime commitments here.

We are grateful to be able to do so.

State of the Rescue

Here are the faces of the rescue currently.
Mandie, Inigo, Lion, Mira, Dana, Franklin, Cyrus, Fiona and Cassidy.
Not pictured are my personal cats, all of whom came through the rescue.
Willow, Jackson, Monkey, Booker, Nemo, Squirrel, Aster and Isabella.
We are still here, though we are not as much of a presence in the community as we used to be. Still taking care of special cats who needed us to provide stability and Love.
When the pandemic hit in 2000, we had just recently adopted out or last kitten in residence, leaving adult cats that weren’t cats who would have done great at adoption days out in public. It then, wasn’t too big a deal to hunker down and wait out the unknown. Truth be told, I was pretty burned out on doing adoption days myself. I had been doing them mostly solo for seven years. It’s quite a bit of work to haul everything there, set up a bunch of tables and cat crates, as well as the cats and our literature and some t-shirts and tote bags we sold to raise funds. And personally, I’m a home body, who isn’t super comfortable set up for any sort of interaction that might come. I met some amazing, kind, people sitting at our booth at Petco, but also had some pretty strange interactions there.
So, cut to almost four years after and we still have cats here who would be very stressed out in public on display, a very weird place for cats to find themselves, and we have had 5 adult cats that have found their way back to us. I aim to write them up individually in separate posts, but for now, want to catch you all up on the state of affairs here, and yes, mostly financial affairs.
We could try doing public adoption days again, a few of the cats we have taken back in recently may tolerate the noise, dogs and kids rushing up to them, no where to hide, but did you know that having adoption days in public cost money? Yep, we had to hold an insurance policy in case the cats (or maybe me) might get stressed and bite someone or what have you. We dropped our insurance in 2020 when the writing was on the wall. Donations were slowing and it was an expense we could do without. We kept counting the coins and paper money coming through our few donation boxes.
We had a few die hard friends that kept donations coming in through PayPal monthly subscriptions and checks coming in when they could send them. We have some very awesome people who have stuck with us over the years. But, with limited funds, we focus on using them for our vet bills not adoption events that really would be too stressful for the adult cats we have here.
We are lucky to have gotten a pretty good running start with this rescue. In the beginning I bought a lot of food and litter on my own and any donations covered vet expenses that we were allowed to have a running balance on as we were getting started. Then partnerships with companies and other rescues in our community had us seeing toy, litter and food donations covering those needs as well. We built up our rescue and our presence in the community and soon saw our little rescue generating enough to cover the vet bills as they came, with a few large bills/surgeries that took some extra fundraising, but everyone came through time and again and we provided what we needed to for all our fosters.
Admittedly, I am not out in the community like I used to be. I’m not asking for donations as much as I used to. Asking for money is the absolute most uncomfortable thing I do (followed by the dreaded, sit out in public and keep composed no matter who comes up to you at adoption days) We haven’t had an adoption since that last kitten was adopted on January 5th 2020. Our cats are all adults and cute kittens and kitten pics are what really bring in the attention. Our corporate donations of food, litter, percentages of sales, etc, have dried up. Our last subscribers discontinued their subscriptions last year.
We are taking the role of sanctuary for the lives of these cats, all though not loosing hope that we might have a few amazing possible adopters out there for some of these kids who could use just the right home.
What I am grateful for, the help of all of the people who have contributed funds, items, inspiration, kindness, homes for our fosters. All have allowed me to do my most favorite thing, take care of cats. As those cats still here or coming back are getting to be mid age or older and need more medical intervention, I am so fulfilled at using my vet tech skills being their caretaker.
What we do have, nine worthy little cat lives. A small group of the kindest people who still give what they can, when they can. My complete and total commitment to the cats I have in my charge. My unwavering responsibility to cats who we adopted out, when they find the need to come back to us.

Now that Inigo and Lion have had their testing/quarantine done, we can introduce them to other cats and see what they think. Inigo and our friendly guy, Booker, are getting along great. They have been following each other around and are on the verge of playing, but very respectful and not pushing. They settled down near each other on the top of the couch. Lion is watching with some distance, but not mad that there is another cat out with them.

Hello Friends! We sure could use your help. Inigo and Lion had their check ups yesterday. Their blood tests came back great and they are very healthy with one major exception. Both kitties need very extensive dental treatments. They both have multiple teeth that need to come out with infection and inflammation that needs to be treated. These dentals will be quite expensive and donations are way down this year. Our bank account is looking very sparse.
I have set up a Go Fund Me page to raise what we need to take care of these two sweeties and get them healthy enough to put them up for adoption so that we can get them back into a home of their own. The estimates from our vet have a low end and high end due to the fact that it is impossible to know the full extent of the damage and treatment needed until they are under anesthesia, have x-rays and hands on exams of each tooth. I have set our fundraiser at the low end. The minimum we need to get started.
Please, pitch in if you can, ANY amount adds up, and share far and wide. We have always provided the veterinary care our fosters need and we need to continue to uphold that standard for these two.
Thank you!!!
