10 years ago today, we stepped into the Pacific Ocean and brought our transcontinental pilgrimage to a close. We are eternally grateful to everyone who supported us on that journey and made it possible. We owe so much to our human family.
We really found ourselves out there - strong and confident and fearless. We learned so much about ourselves and each other, and the world we live in. It's an experience that we carry with us every day. We bask in the memories of the simplicity and synchronicity; the call of the road stretched out before us; the shifting kaleidoscope of clouds and sky; the endless horizon, ever receding; hot mid-day naps under the shade of a single tree; the smell of sagebrush on the warm wind; our dogs, always exploring and discovering and deepening our connection to the land, the journey, the people; and of course, our dearest Jenny. That magical dog taught us more about ourselves than we realized until she was gone (she passed earlier this year.)
10 years ago we gave ourselves a challenge to overcome; and not only did we complete it - we thrived while doing so. We look at our day-to-day lives now raising our kid and keeping the lights on, and we feel a bit domesticated. But parenthood gives us new and exciting challenges every day! It's never boring, that's for sure. She helps us see the world with a fresh perspective. On the best days, childlike wonder takes over again. When times are hard, we remember that we are the sum of everyone we have ever been, and the wild courage we felt on the road still dwells within us. Doing hard things is worthwhile - especially if you can make them fun.
