We are seeing a lot of wild rabbits with Myxomatosis at the moment, which is a contagious and fatal disease.

🐇 If you find a wild rabbit with signs of myxomatosis (usually swollen/shut/discharging eyes is what people notice first) PLEASE call us first to arrange to bring the rabbit to our back door where we can humanely euthanase it with minimal risk to the rabbits in Pets at Home and our clients rabbits.

🐇 Ensure your own pet rabbits are up to date with vaccinations - Myxomatosis is fatal in almost every case and the only protection is annual vaccination. We are trying our best to prioritise appointments for rabbit vaccines but availability is limited at the moment, so we advise booking boosters with as much notice as possible.

Rabbit-lovers will know that there is nothing bunnies love more than to have a good old munch on fresh plants. Not only is chewing a great boredom buster for rabbits, but fibrous plants can also help to support their dental and digestive health.

The results of our survey involving 5 UK rescues are showing a sad trend. Compared to the first quarter less rabbits were taken, less were rehomed and more were turned away. People are still breeding, not neutering their pets, buying from pet shops and breeders without the commitment. It has got to a point when rabbits are found dumped outside every day!
If 754 rabbits were turned away by 5 rescues so far this year, imagine the real numbers of unwanted rabbits in this country, those who can't be helped, those who are abandoned or given away for free to end up in the wrong hands.

Pet shops are a huge issue because people walk in and buy a fluffy pet, like they would a box of chocolates. Our petition to the UK government did not receive the attention it deserved. The problems are now getting worse so we can't give in.

UK Residents, please take a few minutes to write to your MP and ask them to support a ban on the sale of pets in shops. Kittens and puppies are no longer sold in shops thanks to Lucy's Law, we want the same for rabbits and other animals. No animal should be displayed in a shop like a product and bought on a whim by whoever wants one.

For info - This is the petition which is now closed but it shows the poor response received from the government.
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/317648

Please message us if you get a positive response from your MP.

Thank you to the rescues who are taking part in this survey, The Rabbit Residence Rescue Fluffy Butts Rescue Baby Blue Bee Bunnies Little Furries Rabbit Rescue Stanmore Ivy Dene Rabbit Rescue, all doing their best given the circumstances. There is only so much they can do.

Creating a better life for rabbits starts with the basics... like environment 🏠

Whether your rabbit is indoor or outdoors, it's their right to be given the minimum space of 10ft x 6ft x 3ft - any less than this can severely impact their health & wellbeing. As rabbit owners we need to put a stop to small cages & hutches.

In addition to the size of their living space, rabbits should have access to fresh hay & water every day, somewhere they're able to hide away as well as objects that will bring them daily enrichment.

Check out the Rabbit Awareness Week environment checklist below for some ideas!

2️⃣ Companionship – They should live with another neutered friendly rabbit at all times.

3️⃣ Housing – Rabbits need space to a minimum area of 4m x 2m x 1m tall at all times - !

4️⃣ Health – Rabbits should be vaccinated annually and neutered at 4-6 months.

Rabbits are very intelligent and emotional animals, just like us.

And just like us, rabbits can also be sensitive to change, grieve for loved ones, and experience stress, depression, and anxiety.

Looking after your rabbits’ mental health is just as important as taking care of their physical health.

There are no services, remedies, or medications to help rabbits in distress, so it’s up to us as responsible rabbit owners to ensure we take the best care of their welfare and mental health.

If left alone, depression can lead to serious health problems and even death.

That’s why this , we’d like to share the importance of looking after your rabbits’ mental health and wellbeing.

The best cure for depression is prevention, and by providing the five fundamental rabbit welfare requirements, you can help to maintain a positive lifestyle for your buns.

The five welfare requirements are:

1. Diet
2. Environment and housing
3. Companionship
4. Health
5. Enrichment and behaviour

While there can be various different triggers of stress and depression in rabbits, by proving the basic welfare needs you are taking positive action to enhance their mental health and wellbeing.

How can you tell if your rabbits are unhappy?

Although rabbits cannot verbally tell you when they are sad or cry like cats and dogs do, certain changes to their behaviours are key warning signs of stress, depression, and anxiety.

Keep an eye out for the following behaviours:

- Diet: Has your rabbit’s appetite changed or are they drinking less water?

- Hostility: Aggressive behaviour is a clear sign that your rabbits are feeling stressed and/or anxious. Has anything changed in their living situation to cause this?

- Hiding: Frequent hiding and for extensive periods of time is a sign of sadness or stress.

- Lethargy: Rabbits are playful, energetic animals, so if they aren’t as active as usual, something could be upsetting them.

- Overgrooming: Although rabbits like to keep themselves clean, stressed rabbits will overgroom to the extent of fur loss.

- Destructive behaviour and biting: Obsessive biting, such as on the bars of cages, is a sign of stress and anxiety. (Another reason why a hutch is not enough).

Rabbits can be sensitive souls, and anything from a change to their environment to experiencing trauma, like the death of a companion, can trigger depression.

Although veterinarians can give advice, they cannot provide medical care for stress or depression, so it’s up to you to spot the signs of stress and depression and make the right changes to help your buns feel better again.
