What an incredible experience at The Holistic Horse Symposium this past weekend in Eswatini. So much knowledge was shared by some very talented presenters, including our own Ashleigh Sanderson. Topics included learning theory, proprioception, biomechanics and much more. Thank you to everyone involved for educating us more about our ponies. Who is coming back to play in 2025???

Do you know how to identify ponies by the colour of their coats? How many different colours can you identify in this photograph?

Bay coloured horses come in a range of different colours. Three of these horses are bay, but you will have noticed that they are all slightly different from each other. The fourth pony has a grey coloured coat (although he looks white, we call this type of pony a grey).

Do you know what this is? And do you know what it’s used for?

Depending on the country you’re in, this is called a head collar or a halter. It’s used when you need to lead your pony outside of their paddock, or when you need to tie them up securely either at the stable or during traveling.

Do you have a favorite colour? Head collars and halters come in a range of different colours and styles.

What is KudaLearn?

Riding a horse is the final icing on the cake, but for many riders, it’s the introduction they get to the whole story of horses. Spending time with horses, getting to know them physically, mentally and emotionally is where the real powerful connection comes in. For many novices in the equine world, getting to know the unmounted horse is more challenging. Especially when living in a country where English is not the native language. These simple lessons offer a backup to the practical learning received in the stable yard itself, no matter the age of the student.

We are here to help you with resources that are easy to access and learn, so you can focus on creating a more powerful bond with your horse.

Welcome to KudaLearn! We will be sharing more about the page in the days to come, but for now, meet the driving force behind this wonderful platform, Ashleigh Sanderson!

"I am a British-based horse trainer and riding coach from Zimbabwe.

Many years ago, I started out like a lot of instructors by training and qualifying through the British Horse Society, the South African National Equestrian Federation and the International Group of Equestrian Qualifications. I competed across the board - eventing, dressage, show jumping, equitation and showing; ran my own riding school and livery yard and taught all ages and all abilities.

I ticked all the boxes, but teaching frustrated me because though I could see the what, and sense how it needed to be fixed...I couldn't find the words.

Through various circumstances, I found my way to Mary Wanless, of Ride With Your Mind fame, and became an accredited RWYM trainer, being exposed to a totally new way of thinking and explaining.

Now, combining my love of travel, exploring physically and mentally, as well as being a perpetual beginner (I'm always trying out a new sport or hobby) I have turned teaching and learning to equitation on it's head."

Today is "Blue Monday".... Why? It's meant to be the most depressing day of the year... Christmas is over, the weather (in the northern hemisphere) is still miserable... It's still short days and long nights... And January is never ending, even though your bank account is sure it's payday...

So, instead of crying over those already forgotten New Year Resolutions, how about you brighten your Blue Monday by making an action plan... A plan to make 2024 a year about learning and improving your knowledge... Starting with the basics of horse care... Who better to kick it off - a photo of True Blue, to get going on equine ID ... Blue is a "bay". That's a brown body with black mane, tail and legs...
