So glad to hear he’s doing well, such a cool Shetland ☺️

Little Shetland Braveheart has been having some intermittent front limb lameness problems recently. He was visited by local lameness specialist Tori from TM equine ltd and had some x-rays taken which showed mild navicular issues. Braveheart has now got some snazzy little front shoes and is already feeling so much better!

Steroids, Insulin Dysregulation, EMS and laminitis 🐴 This is a conversation that comes up often concerning the safety of medicating joints with steroids and the risk of laminitis. If we are concerned that your horse might be at an increased risk of developing laminitis because of an underlying metabolic issue the safest way to check is by using a blood test to screen for EMS/Insulin dysregulation or even more effectively using a Karolight sugar test and measuring blood insulin levels.

The importance of different x-ray views! These images show the importance of taking more than one x-ray view to assess the entire joint. Ultimately an x-ray is a 2D image of a 3D shape so overlapping is inevitable. These x-rays are from a pre-purchase examination performed by a vet abroad and were assessed on behalf of a client. They show how subtle a bone chip can be in the first image until the angle changes and then it becomes much more apparent.

Using polyacrylamide gel this afternoon to medicate some joints. It can be a great alternative intra-articular medication to steroids and has great results in both improvement in lameness and performance 👌

Addressing foot balance whether your horse is shod or barefoot can be so important and make such a difference to the horse as a whole.
These pictures are from a horse who had foot balance X-rays and then 3D pads and impression material fitted to help support the back third of the foot and to encourage healthy heel and frog development. Pads aren’t always the answer but can be useful in some cases. In this horse the shoeing was in addition to other treatments as part of collaborative approach.
