🐴🎉 6 month milestone for TM Equine 🎉🐴
This was an important milestone for us, 6 months has passed since starting TM Equine. It has been an incredible half a year. I wanted to thank all those that have supported me a long the way, I certainly couldn’t have made the giant leap to go out on my own without you all! I am very proud to provide you and your horses with a friendly, knowledgeable, independent and personal service and look forward to the future 😊

Addressing foot balance whether your horse is shod or barefoot can be so important and make such a difference to the horse as a whole.
These pictures are from a horse who had foot balance X-rays and then 3D pads and impression material fitted to help support the back third of the foot and to encourage healthy heel and frog development. Pads aren’t always the answer but can be useful in some cases. In this horse the shoeing was in addition to other treatments as part of collaborative approach.

Some interesting x-rays over the last couple of weeks! Image one is a stifle showing an irregularity of the cartilage overlying the medial femoral condyle (highlighted by the arrow), the second image shows a small bone fragment within the fetlock joint and the third image shows calcification within the suspensory ligament.

🐴The importance of cross- training your horse🐴
As we all step up our training and fitness programs for our horses in the coming weeks it’s important to remember a few important key points! 🐴bones and muscles can be strengthened by exercise throughout the horses lifetime but cartilage and elastic tendons adapt only during the first two years of life. After that they are susceptible to damage during exercise.
🐴in mature horses a major concern is preserving soundness because damage due to wear and tear has accumulated throughout the horses athletic career.
🐴repetitive use injuries are particularly likely to affect the elastic tendons or the articular cartilage.
🐴we should be careful about the type of footing we are riding on, hard surfaces can worsen arthritis and deep surfaces can predispose to early fatigue and soft tissue damage.
🐴cross- training is using your horse for any activity that is different from the horses sport specific training, for example hacking, pole work, gymnastic jumping, treadmill etc.
🐴ideally horses should cross-train at least 2 days per week, this helps work different areas of the body but also allows the horse some mental relaxation and recovery time.
🐴it’s always good to sit down and evaluate your horses ridden work plan and make sure that you are not spending too much time working the horse in one particular discipline, variation is key.

Get to know your horses legs! One of the most common questions a vet will ask you is whether that’s normal for your horse. Most horses and ponies will have some variation in their conformation and legs, make sure you get to know what’s “normal” for your horse and then you will be able to pick up any changes and potential injuries much quicker 👌

Hearing how my patients are getting on following their treatment makes it all worth while 😊 The lovely bay in the photo is Dor, who has previously had sacroiliac inflammation diagnosed after a bone scan. This was him just after having both sacroiliacs medicated last week in the comfort of his own stable! He was an absolute delight to deal with considering the gale force winds outside 😬 His owner reports that he is feeling really good so far after his treatment last week 👌

An interesting case of a horse last week with a recurrent foot abscess. We always assume that foot abscesses are straight forward but sometimes there is more to it! In this horses case unfortunately despite appropriate management and treatment from both the owner and the farrier involved, it just wouldn’t resolve, so it was decided to investigate further with an X-ray. The first X-ray shows the area of bone resorption of the pedal bone associated with the abscess as well as the area of the foot that has been removed to aid draining. The second X-ray shows the draining tract extending up to the pedal bone.
Most abscesses play ball and are easy and straight forward to treat but it’s always worth bearing in mind that there might just be more going on deep within if things aren’t improving despite your best efforts.
Wishing this lovely horse a speedy recovery😊

What are the options for joint injections???
Hopefully if the weather improves we will all be thinking of longer and warmer days ahead where will be riding our horses more and potentially competing locally and maybe further afield.
Some of you might already be aware that your horse may have some osteoarthritic changes in one or more of their joints, hock joints being the most commonly affected in the equine population.
Joint inflammation and osteoarthritis will influence your horses comfort and their ability to perform unless it’s managed successfully. If your horse needs supportive help then the most common way to help these conditions is with joint injections alongside appropriate rehabilitation, physical therapy, supportive farriery and a fitness regime. However, there are lots of different injectable options to consider for your horse.
If you would like to talk through what might be the best option for your horse if they require joint injections and how to implement that within your current fitness plan then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
