The first two days Spud was pretty much invisible. He hid in his house nearly 100% of the time I was around and I knew I had to work on his social behavior with humans and to learn to trust. So I jumped into my socialization mode. That is:

SOCIALIZING A GUINEA PIG
1) Pick up a treat and walk up to cage and say “Spud, treat”. Keep it simple so he understands what will happen next starts with these words
2) Show treat to Spud and repeat “spud, treat” until he comes to the bars. This might take time
3) Have him take the treat from your hand. Let him enjoy treat

This seems to be going OK and I noticed last night that Spud was eager to get his treat, giving a wheek and coming to the cage bars and waiting. It was then I realized I had been had.

TRAINING YOUR HUMAN
1) Start with one nice "wheek" to get their attention. Keep it simple so they begin to understand what they need to do and not get confused by too much information
2) Human will turn around. Walk to Cage Bars and give human hungry look. If they don’t understand, repeat wheek and hungry look
3) Enjoy the treat the human gave you.

I am shocked but . . . wheek . . . I have to go now. Someone wants a treat.

We adopted another boy, and his name was Potato but I call him Spud now. He is super shy but still wants cuddles. Right now live next to Cassy and Abby (both spayed) until he neutered to keep him healthy and curb some of that energy. Then they will all be properly introduced.

PS: He is ready for winter here!

This year we lost both Popcorn and Nugget. They were such close friends and 7-8 years old so they had a good life. Nugget passed first and Popcorn was so sad but Abby and Cassy moved in with her and her last months were full of fun and family. Abby and Cassy also learned to love family and were in hiding and for me, I was just beyond sad. I had to do something . . . (see next post)

Hi, everyone. My name is Casper and I am the new addition to the family here and the first male here since Sven passed away. Sven was like me white with ruby eyes but unfortunately had a genetic issue that meant he was blind and deaf. Still he had a wonderful live and is missed so very much by those that knew him.

So mom felt she needed to adopt me to add some spice to the family. There are six girls here (all spayed) and I will be neutered soon so I too have a healthier life. The hormones in guinea pig tend to lead to a number of medical conditions and since too many guinea pigs are looking for homes, we here don't want to have any surprise litters. So we just will all be pals soon enough.

For now I am very happy and energetic. I am HOME!

OK, I will take the blame for not posting but as you can see Sugar is quite unhappy about the whole thing. That is a very unhappy face!!!

We are grateful that all are in good health, including Popcorn who is nearing her 7th birthday in a couple months. I hope to be better about posting in the future and I still remember Sven's love and how special he truly was. I also see that special quality in all guinea pigs. They are truly unique - MOM

PS. Popcorn here, and mom forgot to mention that The Adventures of Sven and Family has been targeted for by some not very bright spammers and I want to remind everyone to be careful of what is real and not. Be safe but still have fun.
