Puerto Mushroom Story
We are an OFW family that decided to venture out in entrepreneurship on agriculture business. My departed father was a factory worker in Taiwan, my retired mother was a domestic helper, me and my uncle we are seafarers.
One day I woke up I had a deep realization I’ve been in the maritime industry for 3 years now almost 22 months of that time I was on board laboring almost everyday for the whole contract. The rest of that time to be honest was a blur, I was probably in some training centers or in Marina waiting in line to get my certificate validated, or I was probably staring into emptiness spending weeks waiting for my uncertain departure. It is funny how seafarers labeled rust which was unnoticed as holiday, because holiday is something that we always miss.
When I was young I always look upon my seaman tito’s who work on ships. I admired their huge concrete houses, their cars, their thick gold jewelries but now as a seafarer myself I had the privileged not only to see the truth but experience it as well. Because of this my admiration to all my fellow seafarers only grew, now I know how long they had to wait just to be on board, now I know how hard they had to work on ship to earn every cents, now I know how much sacrifice they are willing to take for their families.
Time is changing, there are just too much Filipino seafarers today chasing their dreams which includes myself. Too many trainings are needed, too many requirements must be fulfilled, today everything is filled with bureaucracy that slows the process just to maintain and create the standard of providing competent Filipino seafarers. Our country Philippines is the world’s biggest source of seafarers, more than 380,000 of the 1.5 million seafarers worldwide are Filipino according to data from the Philippine Statistical Authority and the International Maritime Organization. Note that this study was conducted 5 years ago, imagine how many young Filipino seafarers we have now competing on the same job.
