First day of rebuilding! I love days like this bc I get to start the process of Improving hoof quality, health, stride, and overall integrity. This is why I do this job!
This horse is a wonderful TB mare that competes in hunter/jumper eventing. Very sweet horse! She just needed a little extra work to get her back on the right track. Happy horse and happy rider!
We improved her stance with a proper trim, and fitted her with pads and shoes. Definitely improved the caudel region of the hoof. I also decided to add fast set acrylics to semi weatherproof her hoof wall while it's growing out. We are thinking that after about 15 weeks, or three 5 weeks cycles, she should be good as new with healthy feet!
We will give updates as the process moves along!

Today is a good day to be of service to someone in need. I challenge everyone to do something kind for someone you know or even a stranger! In a world hell bent on destruction and dividing, we need to be the ones putting it back together and that can start with an act of kindness.
To whom much is given, much is expected..

OK so 15 weeks ago we took on a rehabilitation case not only hoof related but overall health too. When we started, I new it was going to be a process but he has responded incredibly well and he is 1 more 5 week cycle away from being šŸ’Æ rehabilitated! The pics are from day 1 of restoration 15 weeks ago till today in 5 week cycles. You can see the progress he has made in just this short time! I am very pleased with how well he is improving!

Big boy Red! King Ranch (yes THE King Ranch) quarter horse, over 17 hands. Beautiful horse, beautiful soul. One of the MOST extreme navicular cases Iā€™ve ever worked on. Years of being lame, owners saddened by his deteriorating condition and unable to use him for anything. Was told he would always have problems and that was the accepted belief. Not me..I donā€™t accept defeat in anything, not my style. When I took on this case I had zero doubts that we could work a miracle because the power of belief works miracles. I explained to the owners that it would take a little time and the most important thing was patience. After years of him having to walk incorrectly, his soft tissue, joints and muscles had become used to having to live a life of uncomfortableness. After his first shoeing cycle with Tennessee Navicular shoes and a pour in gel soft pack for support of the coffin bone and navicular bone, improving his hoof capsule and alignment of the boney column with balance to center of rotation of the coffin joint, that began the process of helping to relieve the extreme pain of Navicular Disease. In the pics you will see before and afters of the shoeing. But more importantly in the videos you will see progress. (Videos in separate post)
The first video is after his first shoeing and he was dead lame and could hardly even move. I knew what to expect but sometimes owners donā€™t quite understand but luckily Reds owners had faith in me and the process.
The second video was taken about a week later and his progress was night and day. The more his body adjusted to walking properly the more comfortable and happy he became. Owners are very happy to see some progress as well as me!
The third video shows it all..really donā€™t have to explain it bc you will see how much better he is!
The owners were so happy bc they havenā€™t seen him running in a VERY long time. It just wasnā€™t something they thought they would ever see.
With patience, understanding of the biomechanics of the hoof and body, trusting the process and belief we accomplished what was said to be literally impossible. For anything in life, never give up, have a true belief and you CAN accomplish the impossible. šŸ¤ šŸŽ
Videos will be in a separate post so please check them out!

Where do I beginā€¦about 4 years ago I met a UGA veterinarian student at one of the barns I was taking care of and she asked if I could shoe her horses, obviously I wasnā€™t going to say no. And thatā€™s the beginning of our journey. An absolutely beautiful million dollar Standard Bred (not joking) named Al and an awesome cutting horse named Hero. Al was absolutely my favorite horse I have ever worked on. Such a gentle soul of a horse and I always felt like he understood me and I understood him. Always stood patiently, even in his old age and never fussed about anything. As with all aging horses he battled against every ailment possible and then some, but always was kind and gentle. He would always give me a kind look as if to say ā€œthank youā€ when I would give him a break from holding his hoof up for me to work on and I would give him rubs and love as a reminder that he deserved it and to say ā€œyouā€™re welcomeā€. As a farrier I can always tell when a horse is hanging on just bc he loves his owner and his buddy (Hero) so much that he refuses to give up no matter how old and fragile he had gotten. After all he had been in her family basically her whole life from childhood through college. When I was told it was his time and the decision was made, I took a few hours on that Saturday to come out to hang with him for a little while and just talk with him, just me and him. What was said is between us and will forever will be. I pulled his shoes and I said my good byes and left. The truck ride home was in silence, no radio just the humming of the tires and my thoughts. I will always remember Al and I would hope he understood how much I cared for him, even though I was just his ā€œfarrier.ā€
I kept Hero on my schedule and continued to trim him, partly bc it was just my way of keeping Alā€™s memory alive but also bc I love Hero too, and I think he needed me as a reminder too.
I get a call saying ā€œLance I got a new horse!ā€ ā€œHeā€™s a standard bred like Alā€. Boy does he have some big shoes to fill I was thinking. ā€œHis name is Kidd!ā€
ā€œOk cool! Iā€™ll come out and see him and get a set of shoes on him for you!ā€
What a handsome boy Kidd is..he has an amazing personality and heā€™s fun to work on.
I write all this to say, that journey has come to an end after shoeing Kidd and trimming Hero one last time , today, the journey between a vet student who is now a full DVM (congratulations!) and her farrier. I know she will do great things. Super smart, very loving and caring about the horses and people too!
Dr. Molly Goldberg, thank you for trusting me for all these years to take care of your horses. With all the ups and downs we had, with pulled shoes, lameness, soundness, stepping on nails, all of it..I wouldnā€™t trade it for nothing, except for Al to still be with us. I know you will be the best DVM the state of Virginia will ever have and I hope that you will come back down to our area one day! I will always remember all our chats and conversations but most of all our friendship. If you are ever around these parts again please reach out! ā¤ļøšŸŽšŸ¤
Again, Thank you!

Today I had the pleasure of shoeing another DVMs horse! Dr. Edwards sweet boy Rizio!
Extremely common issues I see quite regularly in horses, long toes and low heels with a foot migrating forward and out of balance. These issues lead to arthritis in the P1, P2 and P3 joints as well as carpus (knee) problems bc the boney column is not properly aligned.
Balance to center of rotation of the distal interphalangeal joint is always the goal, making sure the HPA is positive. Heā€™s got a little bit to go but heā€™s well on his way to a healthy hoof capsule and alignment.

Remi got her first trim and toe extension today!!
She did great! Sometimes it can be difficult to work on these little babies just bc of the trust factor. Her owner has done an awesome job handling her and spending time with her and that is ALWAYS appreciated by the farrier.
Her left for limb has a slight deviation causing her toe to point out. We fix that with extensions. She will have this on for about 12 days and then we will remove it to check progress. Sheā€™s on her way to being the awesome horse we all know she will be!!

But this awesome man is my favorite of all time!! Not only is he ridiculously beautiful and talented but his rider is second to none. This tandem will be a force to be reckoned with in any event whether itā€™s Xc or Dressage.
When I saw this horse with my own eyes for the first time, he needed some groceries and some podiatry work. In just a very short time, these trainers at Southwinds farm fixed him in a hurry! It takes a team effort with horses, from awesome owners, trainers and DVMs like Dr Allie Reid (Go Dawgs)!
This horse will forever have me in his corner, trainers, riders, and DVMs alike!
Thank you for allowing me to be apart of it all!
