Currently in Darien Illinois - Stella & Adele are two stunning silver Weimaraner girls who have come a long way on their journey to freedom and love. Just over a year old when they arrived at GLWR, these girls were surrendered from a Missouri puppy mill where life was nothing but cement floors, wire fences, and isolation. They had never known kindness, soft voices, or gentle hands—only fear and survival. They’ve overcome so many challenges and are ready to live their best lives with YOU! Piper is home with 94 year old Jerry and is settling in nicely in her new home - and Jerry couldn’t be more thrilled to have her! His son worked with GLWR on his behalf to find him a good companion, and we couldn’t be happier with this match. At pickup, Jerry brought old pictures - some in black-and-white - from 1963 and subsequent years of all of his Weims with both he and his wife. She had passed away a little more than a year ago and last winter was very hard on him being at his home alone. His son even acknowledged that he had a really difficult transition and was convinced that Piper would be a wonderful addition to his dad’s home and quality of life. Jerry also brought and gifted out GLWR volunteer with a brand new 1999 William Wegman calendar! Yup 1999!!đŸ„°

Jerry was speechless as we were loading his car up with the take-home bags, new bed, bowls, blankets, and food. He kept saying “I just came here to get a dog!” He rode all the way home to WI in the backseat so he could sit next to Piper. â˜ș

Happy Tails, Piper!

Clifford

This is a long story but very well worth the read. Clifford is a large Puppy Mill Weim that was brought into the One-of-a-kind animal shelter near Akron, Ohio. He arrived through no fault of his own, and he was absolutely terrified. It was very obvious that Clifford had never been socialized and was very afraid of humans. Sensing this, one of the shelter directors named Tanya, took Clifford under her wing. Within a few days, Tanya finally gained Clifford’s trust and he felt safe enough to eat a few bites of food. A few days later, staff was able to encourage Clifford to leave his kennel and attend a playgroup with other dogs, which he got along very well with. One of the shelter volunteers is Deb, who happens to be Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue’s adoption coordinator. Even though Deb knew GLWR was full, she called the executive director Tonette and told her about Clifford. Tonette set up a transfer transport and brought Clifford into Rescue. Tonette realize that Clifford had special needs and decided that she and her husband Michael would be the best place to foster Clifford. It took many, many months for Clifford to finally come out of his shell. He is a lovely dog.

Clifford was adopted today by the Leser family. We couldn’t be happier for this pup!

GLWR often says “it takes a village”. And in Clifford‘s case this was very true. So many people had a hand in helping this dog find his way with the time, space and tenderness he deserved. While it was definitely not easy
no one gave up on Clifford.

Tonette said this as Clifford and his new family drove away, “Clifford is one of a kind. It’s not often that I tear up these days when a dog leaves after more than 4000 dogs and 20 years
but watching Clifford go today was really difficult for me. He’s such a sweet soul- his new mom and dad are going do amazing with him. He’s going to finally get to experience life and be his true extraordinary Clifford!!!”

If Clifford could speak, he would like to say the following;

“Miss Tanya, thank you so much for giving me the time I needed to feel safe. It sure wasn’t easy, but I’m so thankful to have met you. And I think your hair smells terrific.“

“To Miss Deb, I am so grateful that you saw me and knew who to call. Thanks to your action, I was able to leave the shelter and go to my new foster home.”

“To the transport team, thank you so much for picking me up. I’m so sorry I barfed in your car. I was nervous and excited at the same time. Thanks for the lift.”

“To my foster dad Michael, I am really sorry I was such a jerk and barked nonstop at you for four months. Thanks for showing me that men can be kind. I especially like to thank you for slipping me the extra pieces of duck jerky when Tonette wasn’t looking.”

“To my dear foster mother Tonette- the first love of my life. Thank you for taking me in and showing up every single day when I needed you most. I definitely wasn’t the easiest dog, but I think I may be the most grateful. Thanks to you I now have confidence and a great set of manners which will help me thrive in my new home. I especially wanna thank you for not giving up on me. And now that I’m leaving you Tonette, I’m making space for another dog that needs you. I know he’ll feel the love just like I did.”

“And to the Lesers- my new mom and dad – let’s get this party started! I am so excited that you picked me! I promise to be a good boy and not disappoint you. I am so happy to be part of a family. This will be a blessed Thanksgiving for sure.”

This is formerly Ashley, now Greta. Backstory - Greta was with her foster family for a year before finding her forever home. She’s doing very well now, although her first two weeks were a little bit rough. She wouldn’t walk more than a half a block and she didn’t want to eat. She was definitely out of her element after having been a breeding dog at a puppy mill in Missouri for several years before coming to GLWR. She didn’t have much luck finding a home initially but
after a couple of unsuccessful attempts she is now in her forever home! 🏡

Update - Greta watches TV! đŸ“ș One evening last week we turned on a Netflix program about dogs. Part of it was about breeding and training labs to be service dogs. It started with a mom and her 8 or 9 puppies. Greta heard the puppies, raised her head, and looked at the tv. Then she walked over and sat like that for about 20 minutes, transfixed. Amazing! đŸ„°

Our success stories are all thanks to YOU! To our wonderful team, to those who help foster, rescue, and donate
we couldn’t do it without you.

Please light a candle to help guide Hawk’s journey to the Rainbow Bridge.
Linda, Dennis & family surrounded their baby this morning as he took his last breath
after eating two delicious home-made chocolate chip muffins.
Hawk lived a fabulous life considering he had a very rough start. After being dumped at a shelter in Flint - GLWR transported him to his adoptive family in Canada. Hawk’s home was filled with joy and rescue dogs, cats and chickens - all in a gorgeous country setting.
This beautiful animal had the most expressive eyes - so much emotion in his gaze. And he was adorable. Hawk will be greatly missed by his fur brothers & sisters and family. 💔 Godspeed little Hawk
