Equine Breathing Equine Breathing - the natural way to help your horse

An holistic training method that enables you to help your horses in their recovery from chronic ailments and behaviour problems. Anyone can start doing Equine Breathing with their horse using the free instructions for the simple technique of 1N (one nostril) at www.equinebreathing.com

If you're just starting Equine Breathing in spring after your horse has started showing symptoms here's a reminder that it's harder for the horse to improve their breathing once they have started symptoms. Ditto for over breathing triggers in the environment such as increased UV, insects, pollen and warmth. So as the instructions say, find a time and a place when your horse is most relaxed. If it's warm take steps to cool them and or do the 1N at the coolest time of day. Any questions, just ask 🙂

Excessive snorting is a sign of over breathing

Excessive snorting is a common feature of headshaking, allergies and stress

Snorting can be a feature of the healing process, especially early on

Normal snorting is a necessary and normal function for keeping the airways clear

Normal snorting is part of the horse's repertoire of expression

Snorting involves a big in breath and sharp out breath so increases over breathing

Horses with normal optimal breathing are able to quickly recover good breathing after snorting

Excessive snorting tends to increase over breathing and therefore exacerbate symptoms

You can help your horse to reduce excessive snorting using these free instructions https://www.equinebreathing.com/how-to-do-it 🙂

A common question about healing with Equine Breathing is "will it get worse before it gets better?" It's an interesting one.

When you start holistic healing with Equine Breathing, if you do sufficient training, things don't get worse, they get better. But the holistic healing process is very different from the more conventional approach involving drugs etc to control symptoms. If we are more used to the conventional approach, we can misinterpret some effects of the healing process.

With holistic healing we recognise that the body will do what is necessary in order for it to heal. This might include changes such as an increase in symptoms that would be seen in conventional treatments as "getting worse".

An example could be coughing, which we conventionally assume is a bad thing, but if the body needs to remove wastes etc from the airways then it is an important part of the healing process.

It might be surprising, but changes in the breathing are not necessarily a good indicator of progress during the healing process. The breathing can go through all sorts of changes, some of which might seem 'worse' to us but may be part of the healing process. For example during periods of intense healing, the breathing might get heavier.

Of course in the long run we hope for a body that is healthy and no longer has any symptoms at all.

In holistic healing therefore, it's important to look at the horse as a whole, ie their general wellness, behaviour, state of mind etc rather to focus on specific symptoms.

Notice any improvements in anything in order to be able to observe and monitor the healing process. Improvements can often be surprising and unexpected as well as pleasing 😃

Thank you Jessie Hillegas , Shawna Karrasch Equine and Dr Jenny Susser for this balanced, enlightened discussion. I thank you as a horse lover and also as a horse owner that uses positive reinforcement. But in addition I'm struck by several parallels with Equine Breathing.

Equine Breathing is a kind and effective way of regaining health. But even so many people who don't understand the respiration biochemistry dismiss or deride the idea. Often, it's only when the owner has "tried everything" they come to "the weird woman", to borrow Shawna's phrase, and try Equine Breathing as a last resort. In addition to being desperate, these owners tend to be courageous and free thinking, and less bound by convention.

But almost no-one thinks to use Equine Breathing to stop horses developing chronic ailments in the first place. The scientific connection between breathing patterns and health is indisputable but very few have grasped that it can be employed to set horses up for good mental and physical health for life.

Helping foals maintain good breathing through the extremely traumatic process of forced weaning and then beyond as part of the horse's normal care program could do this. Recognising the significance of breathing for health means that many horse ailments could be avoided.

Over the 25 years of Equine Breathing I half expected someone, with more charisma and business nouse than I have, to plagiarise it and to bring it to a wider market. I wonder if the impressive but variable healing responses that sometimes occur have made this less likely - but to borrow Jenny's phrase; 'that's another bottle of wine' 😄

We continue talking about the 2024 USEF Horsemastership Clinic and now welcoming the perspective of sports psychologist, Dr. Jenny Susser.

WINTER FITNESS WORK OUTS
Are difficult winter conditions making it hard for you to keep your horse fit? Equine Breathing can help because, among other things, it's fitness training! 💪 💪💪 When your exercise options are restricted, Equine Breathing is still an option 🙂 A Breather is most effective but no problem if you don't have one. Anyone can do the free 1N method. No movement is required so it can be done in a stable or other confined space.

Breathing increases fitness by;
• Reducing resting heart rate
• Making oxygen more available to the cells
• Increasing the capacity of the lungs to respond to exercise
• Reducing lactic acid production
• Improving muscle suppleness / relieving stiffness

For example a Dutch international eventer found that her mare's heart rate 10 minutes after finishing a cross country, dropped from 75 beats per minutes to around 60 bpm, after 3 months of Equine Breathing.

Another advantage is that you can help your horse to recover from chronic ailments such as headshaking, sweetitch or cribbing.

Lovely to be a guest on Meredith Crawford's SoulBodyHorse podcast, talking about how Equine Breathing can help horses Thanks for having me Meredith 😍

Hope you'll have a listen 🙂

✨🐎 Today, we have a very special guest, Clare Frost! Clare is based in the UK and she developed the Equine Breathing technique 25 years ago to help her horse, Cool Rain, who had developed severe head-shaking. Frost

🫁 By applying respiration physiology principles, Clare was able to develop a breathing training technique for the horse and the results were stunning! 🌟

😮‍💨 She realized that this technique could bring relief and improved health to large numbers of horses, and made it available for free to everyone who would like to use it.

I see people writing that their horse's personality changes with headshaking. They say the horse goes from being really 'sweet' to 'bad tempered', 'agitated', 'anxious', 'hypersensitive' to grooming and no longer wanting to cuddle etc. For me this is not so much a change in personality as a normal response to discomfort or pain. This response is reversible if the horse's chronic over breathing is addressed and then their natural good-natured personality returns. There are biochemical reasons why over breathing can result in pain or discomfort. Do ask if you'd like me to explain further.

This horse couldn't bear to have his ears touched when he was a headshaker. After he recovered from headshaking with Equine Breathing, he had no problem with his ears being touched. 🥰

The amazing Dr Bob Cook dips in to his immense research based knowledge and experience to discuss the effects of bits on the teeth, tongue, jaw and breathing generally and headshaking, with Daniel Mills.

My horse developed severe headshaking after years of being bit free. I developed Equine Breathing for and with him to enable him to recover and I've seen similar success repeated with many headshaking horses over the years. I would love to have heard Bob and Daniel's thoughts on my view that over breathing is an important underlying cause of headshaking and that the success of Equine Breathing is due to helping the horse regain a more normal breathing.
