I've got some bags of Hebridean fleeces for sale. Great for w**d control, plant hydration and nutrition, hanging basket lining and protection of plants over winter.

Bags of 1 fleece (£3)
Bags of 2 fleeces (£5)
Bags of 3 fleeces (£7)

Rex thinks his working conditions are unacceptable considering he knows I couldn't do it without him.

Mantrailing, what the heck is that?

Well, we get our dogs to go find some men...oh wait no that's a bit weird.

So Mantrailing is an incredibly enriching, enjoyable sport for both dog and handler. Honestly, if you want to see your dog absolutely buzzing and satisfied, and you feel like you've been part of their success...then Mantrailing is just perfect for that.

It's where we task our dog to find a person that has gone off to hide, by asking them to essentially sniff an article of that person and follow their unique scent trail.

It's a progressive sport so you come along to an Introduction, and then come to progress sessions to learn more as a team together. Honestly part of what I love most is how everyone is so supportive of each other and enjoying the social aspect for the humans too.

If you're wondering if your dog can take part the answer is...if they have a nose they can come along and will love it. The only element that is a must is that your dog can rest in their vehicles between turns (we never leave vehicles unattended).

Nervous dogs? Yep
Reactive dogs? Yep
Your dog hates people? Still yep

If you have a high energy dog and are looking to give them an outlet where not only do they feel tired and satisfied, but you get to learn how to read your dogs body language and learn to work as a team....then especially yep 👍

Next Introduction is 18th May 10am - 1pm

Me and Poppy spent the day learning how to find people. I loved seeing how excited she got to start her trails and even better we get to be a team again.

Poppy wants everyone to know mantrailing involved super yummy treats.

Thanks , we'll definitely be back.

I actually got a cuddle off her afterwards.

As of Tuesday Tick season has officially begun.

- If you use a tick prevation treatment and have let it lapse over winter it's time to get it started again.

- Know where your tick remover is (or have multiples for when you loose it). Mine lives in the pocket of my treat pouch and in our human/dog medical draw.

- If I find one I will remove it and let you know (it's better than you trying to find it off a vague location).

- Know how to remove them safely. DON'T suffocate them.

There's a lot of things in the dog training world that seems to suggest it's black or white. It's really not and so many times my answer is 'it depends' which is probably rather annoying but true.

Chasing after toys, is it good or bad?...It depends.

It can certainly do damage if over done (physically yes but also mentally depending on how much your dog can cope with arousal and what it does to their behaviour).

Mostly it's the possible long term physical effects of repetitive start/stop slamming into the ground movements.

But I'm absolutely not against using chase as part of multi facet play and interaction with the owner.

But PLEASE for the love of all things common sense warm up your dog. Don't just arrive at the park, dogs out the boot off lead, and straight into a chase. That's how injuries happen just like with us.

Lower level exercise to warm the joints, walking and trotting, sniffing about. Maybe some focus and engagement to get the brain working too. Then start off slow and also add in some elements of self control during the play. Can your dog wait while you walk out and be released from a distance? Can you hide the toy around corners or behind trees to encourage searching instead of constant chasing?

There's many other options to tire your dog out than just winging the ball until they're physically exhausted.

There are definitely worse way to spend a weekend. Training clinic with Saturday with bonus puppy cuddles (unfortunately he's not mine). Then a few sheep jobs and some extra training with Rex Sunday.

Unfortunately Poppy's legs stiff and sore so a quiet weekend for her.

Well that's the end of Rexs nursery season (and my first one) we might not have had a high scoring season. I am super proud of how hard this dog has worked for me and we did get a few high scoring runs in.

I am looking forward to running Open trials with him in the summer which hopefully means less soggy and windy fields but it is still Scotland at the end of the day.

Livestock worrying is a huge issue and could lead to your dog getting shot lawfully by the farmer.

If you feel like you have your dog well trained enough to be under close control around livestock, then surely it's well trained enough to walk on a lead. So why not just keep the lead on to be extra safe.

At the end of the day, your dog is genetically a predator. The majority of breeds have been genetically selected for a portion of the predatory sequence. A mistake could lead to the sheep being chased, stressed and killed and your dog being killed. It's just not worth the risk.

Rex is having a well deserved rest day today. After a busy week of training, sheep jobs, coming to work with me and a nice performance at a trial yesterday, he's going to have a chilled day of naps and a bit of play (and come along with me to check the sheep).

Poppy does not want to get up yet but will have training later on.

Let us know what your pups are up to today.

The start of a new bit of training for madame.

After the constant on and off of rest and the news that structurally Poppy isn't a healthy dog, Poppy has been washed of any sort of sheep work.

Mentally Poppy needed to be working sheep frequently to be safe doing the job and physically she just can't do that. So instead I need to teach her to be safe being around livestock in terms of not worrying them either mine or other people's stock (not that she would be off lead around other people stock ever).

The goal for this is for her to be able to:
Watch stock calmly (no shouting, jumping about, lunging)
Recall away from stock
Walk nicely on a lead around stock

I haven't done any work on this with her until now because to be honest she was so wire from her long stint of short lead walks it wouldn't have been productive. Now she's getting some chance to run and play (not excessively) she's in a head space it's time to start work.

Today I needed to tidy some fencing and hurdles so the sheep weren't being worked by Rex so it was the prefect opportunity. The sheep were at a distance (I did use Rex to help keep them back), so was able to watch calmly, didn't shout once. She did jump about a little bit but nothing excessive.

I don't think this training will be as consistent as I would like given the dark nights but it's a start.
