Let’s hear it for the boys. Oops. An accidentally Teaching Tuesday post.

Roosters have it rough. Most of the time they are either accompanied by messages along the line of, “Boy, he sure is sweet. I really don’t want to turn him into soup” (sad face emoji), or just straight up abandoned and forced to survive predators, the elements and vehicles. Those are the lucky (?) ones who aren’t ground up immediately at birth. Animal agriculture is inherently misogynistic, but when it goes after the boys, it goes HARD. Bulls anally proded with electrodes to force ej*******on. Jerseys left to starve because it is Xmas and the auction house is closed (or beaten to death in front of their moms to stimulate milk production). We could go on and on. Because let’s face it. NO ONE WINS when it comes to animal agriculture. Not even the idiots who live in the “mmmm. Bacon” comment cess pool. Cancer and heart disease is coming for them too (if the climate change and zoonotic pathogens - like SARS coV2 - doesn’t get em first).

But our Roos, Walter and Jesse live with the three drake ducks in our Swingen Bachelor Pad (where we also have to exorcise HazMat precautions because of bird flu) and their life is okay. Lots of things to peck at, Ron keeps the ice away in their outdoor pool. And the size difference between these two boys keep the “pecking order” relatively simple.

A tale of two sisters.

You remember when we introduced you to Cleopatra Frankenstein May-Shogan (Cleo), the little girl whose mom got eaten by a predator. Well, the same 🧚‍♂️godmother who found her in the abandoned shack, managed to find what sure looks like a big sister from an earlier litter. Meet Lucius Dracula May-Shogan (Lucy). She’s only a tiny bit bigger than Cleo and has a sweet little pink nose. She’s also decided she’s 💯 a daddy’s girl. Which is the smart move since Cleo is a Mum’s gal. It took a few weeks, but Lucy and Cleo have reunited and even had their first vet appointment. Lucy will be spayed in the next month.

Ron-I mean the new social media intern here with a great picture of one of the pigs. Carrie can tell them apart even with my perpetual “ghost filter”, and she tells me this is PeeWee. I know them to look at them but these photos are objectively terrible. So I guess you’ll have to take Carrie’s word for it. Anyhoo, have a great day from me and probably PeeWee.

Apple and I have taken the week off from social media, but we just wanted to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2025. Thank you all for your support and your love.

The Three Little Pigs

It all started with a piglet named Matilda. We loved her to the moon and back and we did what any good pig parent did: researched with others who knew potbelly pigs, read up, found a VeryGoodVet and took her in to get spayed. Unfortunately potbelly pigs sometimes have very bad reactions to anesthesia and despite the VeryGoodVet’s very best efforts, Tilly died. It was like the air and light left our world. We missed our Tilly every day. Then when the hole in our lives grew bigger than the hole in our hearts, we decided to adopt instead.

We found a mother and two daughters in need of a rehome and they came to us on March 25, 2018. We were so happy when we got Momma, Bear and SweetPea. They were terrified, but eventually we had them demanding treats and belly rubs. What we didn't know was they came from a breeder who decided to dump them and all three were pregnant! Three little pigs became 18 pigs in the course of a month and a half! We briefly considered selling the piglets, but through our research we learned that 90% of potbelly pigs are rehomed, abandoned or worse. We knew we had to keep them. It was then we decided to become a forever home to pigs in need. Since then we have become a non-profit society in the province of BC and are working toward federal charity status. We have also grown to 34 pigs and counting, four calves, three sheep, and several kitties and pups, who now have a loving and safe forever home.

We strive to provide transport to other sanctuaries around Western Canada for all animals in need and truly believe we are #strongertogether .
