Our fur kids have fur coats but are they warm enough?

Hypothermia is a dramatic drop in body temperature below normal. A dog's normal body temperature is between 100.5-102.5. If a pet's body temperature drops below 99/98 degrees, hypothermia is a concern.

Mild Hypothermia body temperature of 90 – 99°F
Moderate Hypothermia body temperature of 82 – 90°F
Severe hypothermia is any temperature less than 82°F

Some symptoms of Mild to moderate hypothermia are:

Shivering
Pale Gums
Cool Body Surfaces
Lethargy

Small dogs, seniors, puppies, and short-coated dogs are prone to becoming hypothermic in cold weather. When temps drop below 45 degrees, owners should be mindful that their pets may be chilly!
Below 32 degrees, small dogs, seniors, and puppies should not spend much time outside unprotected. Twenty degrees or below, all pets are at risk for hypothermia.

Winter Pet Safety Tips

As the cold weather sets in, it's important to keep our furry friends safe and warm. Here are some tips to ensure your pet stays comfortable and healthy this winter:

1. **A Pet Inside is a Warm Pet!** 🐾 Keep pets who spend a lot of time outside indoors. If they must be outside, they need extra food to help maintain body heat.

2. **Check the Water Bowl!** 💧 Always ensure your pet’s water bowl isn’t frozen. Hydration is key in any season!

3. **Watch Out for Ice Melt!** 🧂 Salts and chemicals used on icy sidewalks can hurt tiny paws. Wipe off your pet’s feet after walks.

4. **Bang the Car Hood!** 🚗 Warm engines can attract curious critters. Always tap your car’s hood before starting to avoid injury to wildlife.

5. **Bundle Up Short-Haired Pets!** 🧣 Small dogs with short fur might need a cozy sweater for walks.

6. **Create a Warm Sleeping Spot!** 🏡 Ensure your pet has a warm, draft-free place to sleep, elevated off the cold floor.

7. **Be Mindful of Cold Sensitivity!** 🐕❄️ Pets can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia. Limit outdoor time if your pet is sensitive to the cold.

8. **Keep Antifreeze Out of Reach!** 🧴 Antifreeze is sweet but toxic to pets. Clean up spills immediately and store it safely.
