Today is World Snake Day - a day created to help raise awareness and spread education about snakes and the role they play in our ecosystems.

This is an important topic, and something we’re proud to do on a daily basis as ASI. Through our interactive website, our free ASI Snakes app (with over 200 000 users) various publications, public expos, our online and in-person courses and our huge social media following (780 000 people) - we’re able to reach more than a million people and it’s been amazing to see snake awareness and education grow over the years.

Thanks go out to all snake ambassadors, course delegates, group members and app sharers – you guys and girls make the difference! With your help we’re slowly dissolving the ignorance and myths surrounding snakes and spreading snake awareness and education far and wide.

Did you know Dettol is toxic to pets :: not just dogs but birds and particularly cats !!!
The active toxic ingredient is Phenol Chloroxylenol :: this is the antibacterial ingredient in Dettol that acts to kill germs and helps reduces inflammation.
Some well meaning pet owners use Dettol to clean a wound or abscess on their cat.
When a cat grooms themselves it can lead to ingestion of the potentially harmful/ deadly product.
The reason it is harmful to cats is that they are unable to eliminate toxins from their bodies.
Dettol can cause blistering or ulceration of the tongue or mouth, excessive saliva and difficulty eating.
Cats can also walk over a clean disinfected wet floor and then groom themselves by licking their paws.

𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙢𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙚𝙨!

As you know, I saved many buns from a terrible area in CPT recently. Raven, Cole, Bear, Oreo, Peter and many others to name a few have received medical treatment, sterilized and successfully rehomed.

Unfortunately, there are about 25 bunnies needing to be saved, some need vet visits, and all of them need to be sterilized.
The area has started to get worse for these poor little bunnies, cats are picking off the babies by digging them out their burrows, chasing them till they die of fear. Crows are eating the eyes out of baby and young bunnies before they have even had a chance to live.

The above seems to be enough hardship without the human element, unfortunately that is no longer the case. The human element has kicked in full force! There is a large number of residential homes being built and many of the bunnies are now being caught and ending up as a food, I can’t even fathom how these poor domesticated animals are being killed.

I have taken up the task with a friend to catch sterilise and release or home the tamer ones untill such a time we can find a place for all the buns.

Each sterilization costs R400 per bunny, a total of R12 000 has to be raised in order save these bunnies. I have 9 bunnies from this park going to be rescued and sterilized next week, so I am off to a good start.

Please help me help them! If you can contribute towards a steri or pay for 1 steri, I can save these bunnies within the next few weeks and end the suffering in this area.

Did you know?

You need a permit to own an African Pygmy Hedgehog or Lesser Tenrec in Kwazulu-Natal? It cost only R50 & take 90 days to get.

Although pet shops don't normally tell their buyers that you need a permit because 99% of people will then not take the animal.

We have applied for our permit in 2020 and got it in the 90 day frame period.

Email [email protected] for the permit forms.

Kwazulu-Natal isn't so strict on permits for these animals but for peace of mind I would suggest applying for one, it cost only R50 and take 90 days, you also don't have to apply for individual permits if you keep more than one hedgehog or tenrec.

Did you know that despite being the third most popular pets in the world, parrots are the most commonly rehomed?

With them being so popular, we wanted to chat to an expert in bird care to find out how best to care for these pets and what we should know before giving a parrot a home.

shares a wealth of knowledge on our latest podcast. Not only is she an amazing bird mom, she is also a director of parrot rescue

There are so many great tips in this episode, not to be missed.

You can find the link in the bio to the video or head over to the website to the episode page with links.

Danielle ( ) has provided some valuable links which are shared in the show notes too.
