2025: YEAR OF HEARTS
We would like to wish all our supporters a Happy New Year! We’re looking forward to what will hopefully be a great year of helping dogs!
Unfortunately, we are starting the year with two little puppies unexpectedly being diagnosed with heart-related disorders. Both puppies need surgery which is estimated around $10,000 each. We know it is a difficult time of year and we just recently asked for help with Lonnie, so we hate to ask for more help but Dessa and Sterling need us.
Dessa is an adorable female puppy who has been diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). PDA is when a fetal vessel to the heart that is supposed to close after birth, doesn’t close. This leads to excessive blood flow to the heart, putting the puppy at risk of developing congestive heart failure by the time they reach one or two years old. Fortunately, this can be surgically corrected with a high success rate when done during early puppyhood! Dessa is scheduled for surgery January 8th and we will let everyone know how she does!
Our second heart puppy is Sterling. When Sterling arrived in foster, his foster mom was immediately sure he had a condition called Megaesophagus (MegaE) where the esophagus doesn’t function to move food through to the pup’s stomach. He is three times smaller than his siblings at a mere 5 lbs while they are 13-15 lbs! She took him in to confirm her suspicions, and discovered the MegaE is secondary to a condition called Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA). During fetal development, puppies’ left aortic arch should develop into the aorta. In Sterling’s case, his right aortic arch was the one to develop which traps his esophagus and trachea against his heart base. Fortunately for Sterling, PRAA can also be surgically corrected and he will be going in on January 13th!
While we weren’t expecting any puppies needing surgery when we pulled these pups (yet alone two!), we will provide their needed care so they can live out healthy lives! We are grateful we were able to get them off the Texas streets and into our care to receive needed veterinary care, but it is a significant unexpected expense and we would greatly appreciate any help towards replenishing our medical fund.
