Hey all! Rachael here- I just wanted to say how amazing everyone has been while I’ve been away on maternity leave and I truly appreciate all the support and kindness you all have shown my husband and I as we navigate parenthood! Gideon is doing well and growing- I can hardly believe he’ll be a month old on Friday. 🥹

I love this picture I got of my personal horse, Peppy, the other day when I went out to the barn to brush him and just breathe in barn scents again! Be on the lookout for a text with my starting date for lessons again!

I can’t express enough how amazing Katelynd has been stepping in so lessons don’t have to stop while I’ve been away- thank you!

And for anyone not currently taking lessons feel free to shoot us a message today and we’ll work on getting you in the books with myself or Katelynd! ☺️

What else would a dog do during lessons except lay in the middle of the arena and proceed to ignore every word anyone says to her about being in the way?

Oh Lilly…

Happy New Year!!! A bit early but we’ve been hard at work moving all of the horses over to our place and getting them acquainted with the horses already on property.

We are so looking forward to all the new opportunities that 2024 is going to bring us this year and we hope you enjoy those opportunities with us!

We still have some work to do this week before we begin teaching lessons, but I’m extremely hopeful that we will be able to start teaching and scheduling lessons as early as next week, January 8th!

Have a safe New Year’s Eve into New Years and we will see everyone in the new year!

Today is National Horse Day!

National Horse Day is celebrated every December 13. It's a day to remember the economic, historic, and cultural contributions that horses have made. Equine enthusiasts across the country will get together on or about December 13 to show their appreciation for these majestic creatures.

Pictured below are our personal horses Peppy & Toby.

Comment a picture or story of your favorite horse. Lets show the love of horses to celebrate National Horse Day!

Hello all! Welcome to HW Acres! I am Katelynd, one of the co-owners of HW Acres! I am very excited for the opportunity to begin this program!

A little about me: I am Rachael's sister in law (almost anyways). Her brother and I have known eachother for 6 almost 7 years and are growing our lives together. We have a beautiful daughter named Elaine, "Lainey" for short. We also have 1 dog named Hope, a horse named Toby, 2 cats, a gerbil and a fish.

Toby and Hope will be seen around the barn. Toby is a 20 year old quarter horse we purchased this fall. We were visiting CMB for moms night and heard he was available. He and I are learning eachother, but I think he may be a great fit for our program here.

Some of my experience: I have been riding horses since I was a little girl. Sometimes I was weight in the saddle (because I could hold on well) while others were teaching young horses how to work, and other times I was the one being taught. I have shown English (jumping and flat) and western (pleasure and speed) at local shows. I have worked at a saddlebred show barn and attended large shows as a groom/horse care team member. I attended William Wood University for 1 year, but due to life's intervention had to step back from there. I have always loved animals. I lived on a cattle farm for 4 years and have decided my next focus for horsemanship will be ranch riding or competitive trail class.

I have had the ability to learn an incredible amount about the different disciplines throughout my experiences and look forward to helping pass on what I have learned!

Hey again!

My name is Rachael Wood, I’m one of the co-owners of HW Acres! If you already read our welcome post, you know that I’ve been teaching horseback riding lessons for the past two years over at CMB Training under my sister who has taught me pretty much everything I know! If you didn’t read our welcome post, welcome to HW Acres! I wanted to share a little bit about myself for you all to learn more about my background in horses and get to know me!

I’m the youngest of 6 kids- my sister, Abby, is the owner of CMB Training who is closing their doors at the end of December. She started taking lessons either right before I was born or right after, so I quite literally grew up around horses. I think I was 3 weeks old the first time someone held me on a horse, and I started riding/showing around 3/4 years old.

I started out riding western, and developed a very deep seat because I couldn’t quite reach the stirrups for a long time. I remember learning how to do the posting trot when I was somewhere between 7 and 9 and I struggled for several months because I couldn’t get up out of the saddle at the beginning. Everything I remember from being little and riding horses is being around my mom and my sister.

My mom was my second trainer when I first started riding, she taught me that horses were hard work and if I wanted something I had to work to get it. I learned how to take care of my horses stall and started feeding him any chance I was out at the barn. I remember being homeschooled and not being allowed near the horses until I finished my math homework.

I made the switch to English when I was 13 or 14 on my personal horse, Peppy. We had a lot of work in store for us from the time we bought him and even still today when I get on to ride. I enjoyed jumping, and even showed some of Abby’s boarders/lesson horses at a couple of English shows around Lincoln County.

My primary showing experiences were the NEC Frost and Frolic horse shows and the Lincoln County Fun and Frolic Shows. These shows basically covered the whole year every year. I also went to the Youth Fall Harvest shows when they happened up in Columbia, MO, and I showed at several Curious Owl English shows.

I would help Abby ride any 2 year olds that she had in for training, as well as exercise horses for her boarders. I showcased a lot for her lesson kids too when she first started teaching lessons.

Around 2016, I decided to stop showing and ride just for fun. I was a senior in high school and had spent the past 3 years working hard in school and marching band to get some scholarships to college. I graduated in 2017 and went on to get my degree in Early Childhood Education from Lindenwood University in 2021.

I got married in 2021 to my husband Christopher and he encouraged me to get back into working consistently with horses, especially when the opportunity came up to start teaching lessons under Abby. I started small, teaching only on Saturdays, but by summer 2022, I was teaching 4 days a week and by the end of the summer I began teaching 5 days a week with a boatload of lessons.

One of the biggest blessings of my life has been getting to sit next to my sister and teach with her for the past few years, and get to learn from her different methods of teaching the same concept to different kids. It will be so different branching out on my own to teach with Katelynd, but I trust God will provide for us.

I am so excited to begin this new adventure with the support of my mom, my sister, my husband and the rest of my family and friends! Please feel free to reach out and message our page for any additional information!

Meet Tino!

Last, but certainly not least we have Tino coming from CMB to join our lesson program. He is a Bashkir-Curly breed horse. They’re known for their curly hair, but Tino is on their straight haired registry.

Tino is 18 almost 19. He stands at 16.2hh. He’s our tank, sturdy and trustworthy. While he may not make fast turns or fast moves in general, he is so good for teaching the walk, trot and canter! He steers through, around and over pretty much anything! I have yet to find something he won’t do.

Tino loves to plod along, but picks up the pace when asked. He loves barrels, he chest bumps them any chance he can! He is a smooth ride, like a rocking chair just about.

Tino also loves food, he sneaks bites of grass and grain whenever he can and absolutely wants a treat if you have one!

We are so excited to have him in our program to help students finesse their skills!

Meet Sonya!

Sonya is our second oldest lesson horse, but also one of our sturdiest horses to teach on. At 26 (almost 27), she makes a great teacher for rollbacks, jumping, barrels and overall control of one’s horse!

When my sister first went to look at Sonya 13 years ago, she brought me with her and had me ride her to test her out for the lesson program at CMB. Let me just say, Sonya definitely tested my skills as a rider and taught me how to be prepared for anything.

Sonya does fantastic on trails, either alone or in a group- she much prefers to go at her own pace, and she’ll try to sneak a bite of grass (like many horses do). She can jump up to 2’ and will jump just about anything you steer her towards.

She also teaches our kids how to rollback to prepare them for the barrel pattern and is one of our intermediate lesson horses. She is also one of my favorites to teach some basic vaulting skills on (picture below).

Sonya likes to eat, her favorite food is definitely treats of any kind! You are guaranteed to see her ears come forward if you start dropping treats in her feed pan or crinkling treat wrappers.

Meet Lena!

Lena is one of the lesson horses coming with us from CMB to HW Acres. She’s our oldest lesson horse at 33 (almost 34 years old)!

Lena is a sweetheart and loves to nuzzle kids and stand there while they love on her and brush her. I used her in our beginner camps at CMB this past summer, and she enjoyed every minute of pampering that the campers gave to her!

Lena can walk, trot and canter and does a fantastic job of teaching new riders how to steer around obstacles and how to stay persistent in asking their horse to stay going.

One of Lena’s favorite pastimes is nickering at kids and other horses as they walk past her. She just loves attention! She also loves her naps!

Due to Lena’s age, we limit the types of treats that she can have, as she doesn’t have very many teeth left. She loves the soft peppermints that melt on your tongue and never passes up a chance to nibble them up out of your hands.

Hello! Welcome to HW Acres. We are so excited to finally share that we will be opening up our very own beginner and intermediate lesson program beginning in January 2024!

My name is Rachael, I’ve been teaching under my sister at CMB Training for the past two and a half years, while working for her as a stall cleaner or general barn staff member over the 16 years that she ran her business. As of December 31, 2023, CMB Training officially closes its doors for the last time as my sister, her husband and their kids step into a wonderful new opportunity to grow closer as a family. I hope that everyone from CMB will like and follow our page to stay up to date on our progress as we continue to work towards getting our business up off the ground.

Pictured with me is Katelynd and her daughter, Lainey💕 I couldn’t be more blessed to go into business with another member of my family! She will be my partner in all things lessons and horse care- we will start off co-teaching so many of our lessons who will be starting with us in January have a chance to meet and get to know her before she begins teaching them on her own.

I can’t thank Abby (CMB Training) enough for all of the knowledge she has given me about caring for horses, caring about my lesson students, and believing in myself and God over the past- well, 25 years really! I have loved every minute of the last two years working as an assistant instructor to my sister and getting to learn from her every second of the day.

Please feel free to message us on Facebook and make sure to watch our page for updates on our official opening day!
