When AARF received word earlier this year about an accidental litter of miniature schnauzer puppies needing help, we had no idea we were about to take in a whole family. The initial call mentioned four female puppies, adorable mini schnauzers at 13 weeks old, who needed veterinary care and rehoming. But when pickup day arrived, their mom appeared too - a sweet girl named Poppy, with a bright little face and soulful eyes. And when a call came the very next day about taking their dad? Letâs just say, rescue is sometimes a Family Affair.
With a complete schnauzer family of six in need of vetting, spaying/neutering, and grooming, our amazing community of fosters stepped up to take in all of the dogs, and with donations from the community, AARF was able to provide the care and vetting needed for each of them to find their perfect forever homes. Once each was medically ready, they each found their forever home.
Once Poppy was settled in her new home, she began exhibiting anxiety, excess energy, and had quite a lot to say about everything (okay, she barked. A LOT). And thatâs where AARF's community approach to adoption makes all the difference. When Poppy's new family needed support, her foster parent connected them with AARF resources, and they eventually enrolled Poppy at Pet-U-Cation, an AARF training partner. With patience, commitment, and the expertise of an experienced trainers, Poppy transformed from a bark-happy bundle of nerves into an AKC certified Canine Good Citizen!
âMy husband and I always knew that rescuing was the right option for us for bringing a pet into our home. AARF has brought 2 very special and loving dogs into our lives.I cannot emphasize more the dedication and passion that the AARF volunteers have towards their mission. The sense of community we receive from AARF doesn't end once your pet comes home.â - Poppyâs adopters.
At AARF, we take the commitment to finding a âforever familyâ seriously. And that means our commitment to the animals doesnât end after the adoption contract is signed. We offer resources to help each family be successful, as the transition from one home to another can be difficult. Poppy was also lucky that her family was committed to putting in the effort to make that transition successful. And these days, this energetic girl has found her groove as the snuggle-loving, eternally curious heart of her family.
â¤ď¸AARF has spent approximately $206k in medical costs for animals in our care this year alone. As an 100% volunteer-run, foster-based rescue, your donations go straight to critical care costs for vulnerable cats and dogs. This year AARF has received a $6k matching grant for Giving Tuesday - meaning with your help, we can raise $12k to provide life-saving care to the cats and dogs of the Baltimore region. â¤ď¸
