💞 Meet ATHENA!
She is a half Akbash and black lab mix puppy. Dad is a 138lb registered Akbash and pictured so you can understand the growth potential.
Athena is all lab personality and looks. She has droopy ears and webbed paws, she also has double hind dew claws like her daddy. Her nose will turn solid black as she gets older. She is a total love bug and enjoys belly rubs and cuddles. Athena is five weeks old, and the size of a 10+ week old.
Athena is puppy pad trained and will follow you outside to go potty if taken every 2 hours (training and her young age). These puppies are extremely intelligent, love to get into water bowls, and are just precious, all around.
Please contact [email protected] if you would like to add this angel to your home.

Update: Lilly has been Adopted!! She has wonderful new parents and we are happy for all. 😺😺😺

My name is Lilly and I am 12 weeks old. My sister Jenna and I were donated to help raise money to save other animals in need. My sister Jenna was just adopted, and I am, now ready, for a home of my own.
My mommy is a ragdoll. (Ragdoll colors include black, white, gray, blue, cream, lilac, chocolate, seal, and red. This breed is known to have blue eyes, but it is not an exclusive feature of the ragdoll.). Daddy is a chocolate Siamese. I have grey/green eyes.
I love being held, pet, chasing red light pens and string. I am smaller than I seem in the pictures. Please only loving homes apply.

Meet Fluffy, (yes that has been his name since birth). He is an 18 month old livestock guardian dog. He is a purebred Akbash dog. Akbash are often confused as Great Pyrenees, and they look identical at first glance; but the Akbash are taller and longer body wise. This is a fierce, guardian dog. He would defend you , your home, livestock and family with his life.

* A knowledge of this breed is a must, and could be compared to the Anatolian shepherd (protectiveness). His instincts are more intense than the Pyrenees.
Fluffy lives with cats and dogs (as long as the other males are neutered), kids, chickens and turkeys. *He cannot guard chickens* Fluffy is great with the house birds, but if out, free range, he likes to chase them (and you can imagine the rest) 😩.

IF, he is outside alone:
*He will bark at our donkeys. This is because our baby Jenny thinks he's another donkey and tried to play with him, and well, she stepped on his paw, and he has barked ever since. (Can't blame him), 😂
He is okay with our horses, but, occasionally will bark at them when out and about, then lay and guard, or sleep. He is fine with sheep and lambs as long as you have all females, or a non-ramming male. If one rams into him, he will retaliate with teeth.
**HOWEVER, When paired with another female great Pyrenees, starts to guard in pairs and will follows her lead.

He is an excellent guard dog of the home and is an indoor/outdoor with doggie door guy (XL size).
He loves car rides and loads and unloads easily. He walks like an angel on the leash and is never dog reactive when out. He is a show stopper, not many know what he is, and are astonished at his size. I guess you could compare how tall he is, to a shorter great Dane in stature.
He is a love bug, with serious protective qualities, that will make the most skilled home invader run screaming. His bark could definitely deter alone, and that is before they would see him. 🤣.
If this sounds like a good fit for you, please email [email protected]

*Coming SOON*

We have the most adorable Akbash and Labrador retriever mix puppies!
Akbash are livestock guardian dogs and look identical at first glance, to the Great Pyrenees.but are from Turkey and taller. They were born on July 1, 2024. All puppies have been raised indoors, but they have been exposed to dogs, cats, kids, turkeys and chickens. They have been eating puppy chow with goats milk mixed in. They are puppy pad trained and will follow you outside to go, or taken out every 2 hours. The Puppies are the size of 8+ week olds right now, with one pup being half their size (took the lab genes of size) of a normal 4 week old, in an 8 week olds body. Lol
Their Dad is 138 lbs and pictured last. He is 18 months old. Momma refuses to nurse and has started to growl/snap at pups (due to fast growth and size). She will be spayed next week, and also be available for adoption after recovery.
These puppies cannot be spayed or neutered until a minimum of 12 months, due to the breeds fast growth rate, large frame and bone fusion. They also will require goats milk powder with their puppy chow until 6 months (bone growth).
Because of their special requirements as a livestock guardian breed, size and being mixed with a lab, their potential new homes will be screened extremely well.
Please contact [email protected] for more info 🦄

Evaluation Comments - This information is observations from our staff and volunteers

8/6/2024 AM Rounds - Defensive barking; jumped on glass door; baring teeth
8/3/2024 AM ROUNDS: at guillotine, back portion of kennel, wrinkly nose bearing teeth eyes dilated
8/3/2024 Met canine at the rear of the kennel. Second handler begun to offer turkey as first closed the guillotine to keep dog in rear half. Much turkey was offered before leash was shown, canine showing teeth with a tense body on sight of the leash. Second handler would attempt to open kennel partially and show leash, but canine would continue to show defensiveness towards the leash with lip curling and sharp, quick vocals; occasionally lunging at the leash with mock-biting. First handler approached then and using a wide, long-leash lasso attempted to gently sway the leash over the canines head. Dog would retreat and bite up at the leash, but after only a couple attempts handler was able to drape the leash over the dogs shoulders. Carefully dropped the weight of the leash so it'd sag, and shimmied the slip ring back slowly until leash was secured. With leash secured, canine immediately showed a much softer body, exited the kennel loosely and followed both handlers out of the kennel. Handlers moved into the training room with canine. In the room, canine sought attention from both handlers; remained soft and loose and actively accepted and sought petting. Would lift a paw up to solicit further attention and even attempt to crawl into handlers lap. Canine allowed handler to put a collar on; as well as allowed handler to attach and remove a clip leash on multiple occasions. Canine had positive interactions with several staff members during a short walk through the facility. On return, handler used a clip-leash. As dog entered the kennel she showed a tense body once more, became weary as handler removed the leash. Handler would attempt to call canine over to see if dog would allow clip leash first, but canine was weary of any touch once more and didn't allow. Same weariness towards the leash when showed once again. Interaction ended here. Sending canine to OEC for further review after latest evaluation attempt.
8/2/2024 AM ROUNDS; baring teeth, alarm barking, tense body
8/2/2024 Met canine at the rear of the kennel. Second handler would attempt pull first. Several minutes were spent at the kennel giving canine turkey to build some familiarity. On attempts to open the gate and present leash, canine would begin to lip curl and show teeth; tense, stiff body with hard stare at the leash. This handler would approach and attempt after, briefly tossing some turkey to the canine before opening the kennel door partially. More turkey was offered with the door slightly ajar. With a wide-loop leash, handler would attempt to 'lasso' leash over the dogs head. Canine would lash out and charge the leash, lunging and biting at the lead in each attempt. On a couple occasions the leash would fall over the dogs head, and the canine would briefly loosen and relax, before head-flipping the leash off and immediately turning tense once more. Handlers ended attempts due to canine showing signs of more intense stress. With approval given, recommending a 3rd attempt with two experienced handlers.
8/1/2024 canine in back of kennel in sit position, eyes wide, dilated, baring teeth, tail tapping, growling; stood up, tail low fast tail flicks. Staff went around to back of kennel. Canine growling and barking, eyes dilated, teeth showing, lunged forward towards gate.
7/31/2024 Handler approached front of kennel and canine was in rear; slowly began approaching with lowered head, eyes wide; a couple feet from handler canine bared all teeth then rushed the kennel door, muzzle punching glass and low growling, holding eye contact; handler stepped back and canine held position; handler moved to rear of kennel where it is quieter; cracked gate, canine lunged forward and snapped; handler closed door and discontinued interaction
7/30/2024 AM Rounds - Snarling at staff
7/29/2024 tail tucked; skin crawl when touched; allowed exam and vaccines on snare; side eye given when approached; low growl when approached; walked to kennels on snare; did not seek human affection or attention 07/30/24 09:40 updated intake color to orange based on notes

Memo
08/07/24 15:47 Canine is showing high levels of anxiety and stress in the shelter environment showing defensive behaviors in kennel and leashing. Canine needs placement with a New Hope Partner who can evaluate behavior outside the shelter environment and provide needed behavioral support by close of business 8/12/24. May be at risk for euthanasia 8/13/24 or sooner if warranted. Due to canine's behavior and if unable to be pulled in for surgery, canine may be released to a partner unaltered.
