Why Do Cats Purr?

Cats are fascinating creatures, and one of the most mysterious and soothing behaviors they exhibit is purring. But why exactly do they purr? While it might seem like a simple expression of happiness, purring is much more complex and serves a variety of purposes in a cat’s life.

1. Contentment and Comfort
The most common reason cats purr is to show contentment. You’ll often hear them purring when they're being petted, curled up in a cozy spot, or interacting with their favorite humans. This is their way of expressing pleasure and relaxation. It’s a cat’s version of a smile!

2. Self-Healing
Surprisingly, cats also purr when they are injured or feeling unwell. Research suggests that the vibrations created by purring have healing properties. These low-frequency vibrations (between 25 and 150 Hertz) can promote the healing of bones, reduce pain and inflammation, and even repair muscles. So, when a cat is hurt or stressed, they may purr to help calm and heal themselves.

3. Communication with Humans
Cats sometimes purr to get their human’s attention. If they’re hungry or want affection, their purring may become more persistent, often accompanied by other behaviors like rubbing against you. This “solicitation purring” tends to have a slightly higher pitch and can be very effective at drawing attention.

4. Bonding with Kittens
Mother cats purr when they are with their newborn kittens, creating a soothing environment. Kittens are born blind and deaf, but they can feel the vibrations of their mother's purring, which helps them feel safe and bond with her. In turn, kittens start to purr at a very young age, communicating back to their mother and siblings.

5. Stress Relief
Cats might purr when they’re in stressful or unfamiliar situations. A trip to the vet, for instance, might trigger purring as a way for the cat to soothe itself. This form of purring is a coping mechanism to help reduce anxiety and keep calm.

The Magic of Purring
While purring is often associated with happiness, it's a versatile and fascinating behavior with emotional and physical benefits. Whether your cat is purring because they're content or trying to heal, it’s their way of communicating both with themselves and with you. Understanding the different reasons behind a cat's purr can help deepen your bond with your feline friend.

I’m Copper, the one and only wirehaired mystery mix—maybe a Doodle, maybe not, but definitely a dog! I think.
I come with a stunning pair of golden eyes that could make even the toughest human melt. At a year and a half old, I’ve seen some things, man… and by “things,” I mean I’ve been a little, um, nervous about this big ol' world.

When I first joined the rescue life, I was the king of “pancaking.” Yup, you’d see me just flop right down and refuse to budge. New people? Copper Pancake. New dogs? Copper Pancake. New places? You guessed it, Copper Pancake. But don’t worry, I’ve been working on a waffle recipe. Just kidding, I've been working on my bravery, one tail wag at a time!

It started with a pretty awesome foster human who helped me chill out and start trusting these strange creatures called “people.” I’m still a little shy when I first meet someone new, but I no longer look for the nearest griddle.

Thanks to living with the coolest pack every I’ve even learned that playing with other dogs could actually be fun!

So, here’s the deal: I’m on the lookout for a new home with a cool, calm dog buddy who can help me keep leveling up in the confidence department. I’m also hoping to find some patient humans who can keep helping me explore the world with lots of positive vibes, treats (I’m a sucker for treats), and a steady routine.

Oh, and just so you know, I’m neutered (no puppies for me!), fully vaccinated (shots? Check!), treated for parasites (gross, I know), heartworm negative (healthy as a horse… or a dog), and microchipped (you’ll never lose me).

So, what do you say? Ready to be the peanut butter to my jelly? The yin to my yang? The human to my dog? Pop over to LifeIsBetterRescue.org and apply to be my forever friend today!

Hey there, hoomans!

I’m Livvy, the fabulous and fancy 2-year-old domestic short hair tuxedo cat with a story that’s juicier than a can of tuna. Once upon a time, I was on death row—yes, you heard that right, DEATH ROW! But don’t worry, I was wrongly accused and I managed to pull off the great escape! Now I’m living it up at our partner PetSmart located at 160 Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood, CO 80226. You can come visit me anytime; I’m here signing pawtographs. You can even apply to adopt me on site if you decide you can't pawssibly live without me.

Let’s get the important stuff out of the way: I’m spayed (no kittens in my future, thank you very much), vaccinated (I’m basically invincible), microchipped (so you can’t lose me), dewormed (eww, worms), and I’ve had an anti-parasitic treatment (because parasites are just rude). I’m not saying I’m purrfect, but let’s be real… I’m pretty darn close.

So, what do you say? Are you ready to be the lucky human who gets to take me home? Come on down to PetSmart and let’s make this happen. I promise, you won’t regret it!

Hi there, I’m Copper! 🐾

I’m a wire-haired mixed breed (maybe a Doodle, but honestly, I don't remember my parents) with the most mesmerizing golden eyes you’ll ever see. I’m about a year and a half old, and I’m looking for a forever home that understands I’m a work in progress—but I promise I’m worth it!

When I first came into rescue, the world was a pretty scary place for me. I was so under socialized that I would often just freeze up and "pancake" when faced with new situations. But guess what? My foster family helped me feel safe and secure and I started to trust the humans around me. The truth is, I’m still a bit shy with new people, but with a little time and patience, I warm up.

My biggest challenge was other dogs—I was pretty terrified of them! I would bark, growl, and just get myself all worked up. But things have changed! I moved in with a foster who’s a trainer and lives with the coolest dog pack. They’ve taught me how to “dog” properly and now I actually enjoy playing with other dogs! I'm as surprised by this as you are, but it's true!

What I really need in my new home is a calm, confident dog friend to show me the ropes and help me keep growing. I also need humans who are patient, understanding, and willing to help me continue to explore this big, wide world. I’m still learning, but with positive reinforcement and a steady routine, I know I can be the best companion you’ve ever had.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering—I’m neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for parasites, heartworm negative, and microchipped.

Are you my patient and loving forever friend? Visit lifeisbetterrescue.org today and apply to adopt me!

Arizona is a 4.5 year old Akita Mix that was transferred to rescue from a local shelter with her newborn puppies. After raising her puppies, who have all been adopted, Arizona has settled into a happy life and routine with her foster and is a friendly, healthy adult dog. She's been with us for more than seven months, which is surprising given that she is housebroken and gets along with people, other dogs, and even cats. We believe that prior to rescue, Arizona spent a lot of time outside and can sometimes be more comfortable lounging in the backyard than in the house. She's also become very attached to her foster dad (as Akitas tend to do) and will require an adoptive household that understands there will be a transition period before she is comfortable with her new family, surroundings, and routine. Arizona can present with separation anxiety, which includes pacing and verbalizing her displeasure, however with time and consistency, these behaviors have been eliminated in her foster home. We'd love to see Arizona thrive in a home that knows the breed and is truly committed to the time and energy required to help a rescue dog settle into a new and better life. Whether you work from home, are active and like to take your canine pals along, or own property where she can explore, we'd encourage you to consider making Arizona a member of your family.

There are many reasons a cat purrs. While often associated with happiness, cats also purr when in pain or distress as a form of self-soothing. Remarkably, the vibrations from purring can help cats heal injuries and reduce inflammation.
These benefits may extend to humans as well, with studies showing that the frequency of a cat’s purr can lower blood pressure, alleviate stress, and aid in healing. Therefore, the next time you hear a cat purr, remember the intriguing science and therapeutic advantages behind this comforting sound.

Hi! I'm Ava, a five-year-old shepherd mix with a soft, shy personality. I’ve had a tough time recently, as my mom passed away after a brave battle with cancer, and I was transferred to rescue. Despite the big changes, I’m starting to show my true, sweet personality as I get more comfortable.

Here’s a little about me:

♥Gentle and Sweet: I take a little time to warm up to new people, but I’m very loving once I do.
♥Dog-Friendly: I’m appropriate with other dogs and have started to instigate play.
Explorative: I love exploring the world on walks and curling up by your feet or on the couch.
♥Well-Trained: I’m fully house trained, can be crated, and am non-destructive when left unattended.
♥Sensitive to Body Language: I communicate a lot through body language. Respecting my signals like lip licks, appeasement kisses, and eye contact will help us build a trustworthy relationship.
I’m living with a professional positive-reinforcement trainer who says I’m a super gal. I know basic obedience, but I could use some more practice with leash skills. I’d do best in a quieter home without young children and lots of commotion, and I’d be fine with respectful dogs that match my energy level. While I’d be happy with another dog at home, dog parks can be a bit overwhelming for me.

If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal companion who appreciates a calm environment, I’m the perfect match for you!

I can’t wait to find my forever home and share my love with you! 🐾❤️

Hello! I'm Tempe, a four-month-old mixed breed puppy with a lot of love to give. My mom is an Akita, but I take after my mystery dad, looking like a fluffy teddy bear. I’m going to be a big girl, already weighing in at well over 50 pounds with giant paws that I still need to grow into!

Here’s a bit about me:

Eager to Please: I’m working hard on all the normal puppy things like socialization, housetraining, and obedience.
Large Breed: As a large breed, it’s important for me to continue with training and explore the fun world around us.
I’m in great health and ready for my forever home:

Spayed ✅
Vaccinated for age ✅
Wormed ✅
On heartworm preventative ✅
Microchipped with registration ✅
I promise to bring lots of joy and love to your home.

Are you ready to welcome a big, fluffy teddy bear into your life? I can’t wait to meet you and start our adventures together! 🐾❤️

Hi there! I'm Callie, an 8-month-old mixed breed puppy who was saved from death row. I’ve come a long way and now I'm ready to find my forever home!

Here’s a little about me:

Playful: I absolutely LOVE to play with my friend Brooke!
Quick Learner: I might not have had much exposure before, but now I’m sitting and waiting for my food until I’m “released.”
Kennel Trained: I’m a pro in my kennel with zero accidents!
Responsive: I know my name and come when called.
Toy Lover: I adore toys, especially the ones with fluff that I can dissect! 😂

I’m looking for a family who will keep me occupied as part of their daily routine. If you’re looking for a smart, playful, and affectionate puppy, I’m the perfect match!

Hello! I'm Carmen, a two-year-old mixed breed with a bit of Aussie charm and a touch of mystery. I'm a smart girl with a big heart and an even bigger capacity for learning new tricks and obedience skills.

Here’s a little about me:

Dog-friendly 🐕
Kid-friendly 👶
Housebroken 🏡
Crate-trained 📦

My foster mom crates me when she leaves because I do enjoy a good chew. I'm not a runner, but I've figured out I can jump short fences to get to the front door, so a home with a privacy fence or regular leash walks would be best for me.

I weigh less than 40 pounds, so I'm pretty petite, and I think I'd love outdoor activities like hiking! I’m in excellent health! I am:

Spayed ✅
Vaccinated ✅
Heartworm tested negative ✅
Wormed and treated for parasites ✅
Microchipped with registration ✅

If you're looking for a smart, friendly, and active companion, I'm the perfect match. Let’s explore the great outdoors together!

I can’t wait to meet you and become your new best friend! 🐾❤️

Hi there! My name is Copper, and I'm a 1-year-old Wirehaired Terrier who was saved from death row. I might be a bit timid at first, but with the right family, I know I can blossom into the perfect companion.

Here’s a bit about me:

I love playing in the yard and am very affectionate once I feel comfortable. I’m working hard on my obedience training, including house training, crate training, and general commands. I’m looking for a quiet home without small kids where I can feel safe and secure. I would do great with a confident doggy friend who can help me come out of my shell.

I need a family who will keep me occupied and include me in their daily routine. If you’re patient and loving, I promise to be the most loyal and loving friend you could ever wish for.

I am:
Neutered ✅
Vaccinated ✅
Microchipped ✅
Dewormed ✅

Are you the special person or family who can give me the forever home I deserve? I can’t wait to meet you and start our new adventure together! 🐾❤️

Arizona is a four year old Akita that was transferred from a local municipal shelter after surprising everyone when she went into labor. She's a big girl, but a gentle giant. At the shelter, she passed all of her temperament and behavioral testing, and was even used to help temperament test other dogs. Like most new moms, Arizona was very protective of her babies when they were small, and now that they are weaned and growing up, she's relaxing and feeling more like herself. She had surgery to fix entropion on her left eye, and is ready to find a forever where she will be treasured. Arizona is housebroken, crate trained, and loves being outside.

We have a personal plea - and while everything in this world seems to be getting a little more expensive, we're hoping you'll consider a gift to help us rehabilitate a very special dog so that her adoption is permanent and a success.

This is Cassidy. She is a purebred Rottweiler that was rescued from a rural shelter where her future was uncertain. She is beautifully bred and has many of the characteristics of the breed that made them so popular starting in the 90s. She is diligent and alert, monitoring her home and fiercely loving her people. She gets along great with other dogs and humans of all shapes and sizes....she has issue with small animals (rabbits, cats, squirrels - I mean, how dare they?), but that isn't her issue and why we have put together this post.

Cassidy was never good at being a shelter dog, and she would frequently break out of her evening kennel lodgings - no matter if it hurt her face or paws in the process. When I personally assessed Cassidy, a stillness of spirit had overcome me, and for those that remember Porsche, I could not have left this dog behind.

When she arrived in Denver, Cassidy took to her foster family immediately, and has no problems with their pack of dogs. She is obedient and loving, and once her surprise double ear infection was addressed, she became even more in love with the idea of having a family of her own. Sadly, this is where Cassidy's story is less happy.

Cassidy has developed severe anxiety, with much of it presenting as separation anxiety. To make a long story short(er), she has been assessed by two veterinarians, a trainer, and has had a behavior consult. Despite our best efforts, she has been returned twice, and each time she is returned, her anxiety ramps up even further.

It's not possible for the fosters to adopt, and that's not why they signed up to help. But we have an application and we are hoping it is her last, as Cassidy needs her forever home. With the guidance of our professional team, we have ordered supplies (now including an extremely expensive crate that will go with her - free of charge - at the time of adoption). This is not to mention training and medical costs.

Here is our plea - rescue funds are in incredibly short supply. The crate alone was almost $700 with shipping. Add to it the other funds we are committed to using to see Cassidy have a great outcome, and we are upside down at an alarming rate to help this beautiful creature.

Can you help us offset these costs, so that we can not only help Cassidy, but also more dogs like her? Can you share this post to people you think would be willing to keep Cassidy in mind when they choose to donate the cost of a morning cup of coffee as a means of being the good we can create in this world?

Any funds we might receive beyond her expenses would go to other animals needing help to become adoptable.

Here is our paypal link or you can donate directly through Facebook.

Thank you for helping us help them!
