Happy World Binturong Day!! From Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium
Today is World Binturong Day, and we have a special someone for you to meet: Poppy! This 4-year-old female binturong arrived at the Zoo toward the end of 2023 from the Memphis Zoo, and during this period she has been behind the scenes getting used to training with her new care team. Our animal ambassadors reside out of public view, but in the future Poppy will participate in our Animal Adventures LIVE program!
Binturongs are also called bearcats, but they are not related to bears or cats. They do, however, have a cat-like face and a bear-like body. They are related to civets and fossas, and they smell like popcorn! The smell comes from an oil gland on their tails, and it spreads around their environment to whatever the tail touches as it moves.
Native to rainforests of southeast Asia, binturongs spend most of their time in trees and have a prehensile tail which is almost as long as their body. They can use this tail like an extra hand to grip onto branches and can even hang completely by their tails.
Binturongs have no known predators, other than humans, but they are considered to be both vulnerable and endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), depending on the specific habitat range. Their biggest threats are habitat destruction, hunting for meat, and poaching for fur and the pet trade.
We look forward to introducing you in person to Poppy in the future!
