A quick poll, if I were to add subtitles to my videos what languages would be the most beneficial? I’ve figured out how to get them added… translations will be google translate from English.

Here's Garmr's 2nd track ever on his tracking journey to a 99V IGP1 Title. The "secret" is solid fundamentals all found in the Tracking 101 Course
https://www.schutzhundkevin.com/course/tracking-101

Track Like A Champ Series - Day 2

Garmr’s second track! Be sure to subscribe and follow along his progress track by track.

The track is about 80-100 paces long, hot dog in every step minus a couple, slight serpentines, and he’s picking up the footstep scent = rewards.

The important part is to not move down the track unless he is in the footstep. Physically prevent him from going by holding on to the long line, then praise once they put their head down to work. Again this is his 2nd track ever, so we’re in the teaching phase of tracking and not giving corrections for getting off the track. Be sure to check back tomorrow for Day 3 of Tracking.

Track Like A Champ Series - Day 1:

Garmr’s first track! It’s been one long hot and dry summer, so I’ve just let it wait. He’s 21 months old and getting started. No worries, he’s not behind, he’ll be well ahead of puppies tracking since 8wks old in a couple months. :) Be sure to subscribe and follow along his progress to see for yourself.

The track is about 20-40paces long, hot dog in every step, slight serpentines, and teaching him the footstep scent = rewards.

Mr. Garmr had a great weekend earning his IGP1. 99-95-98 - 292! He’s starting off his Schutzhund career with his trophy shelf full. 🙂 High Tracking, High Obedience, High Protection, and High in Trial. He did an amazing job and performed exceptionally well.

I want to thank everyone that’s helped along the way especially my partner in crime, Merissa for kicking our butts in gear to be “Schutzhund Do-ers” and putting the work in. Early morning tracks, making it a priority to train at night etc. The dogs do better when you actually get out and train. 🙂.

Also all the Salem Schutzhund Club members for trial prepping, getting practice tracking, trial tracking, groups, field setup, mock trial etc and hosting yet another great trial to be able to enter. Also the helpers along the way Bobby, Merissa, and Pat for the weeks coming up to the trial to get trial prepped and dialed in.

I’ve been focusing on my dog getting trial ready so I haven’t posted in a while. Now that we’re on track I’ll be having lots of new content, especially since the weather is finally turning around from this long wet winter. Looking forward to showing Garmr in future events!

Here’s how we do it. 🙂

Got sit, down, stand? Here’s Garmr practicing some reps of verbal response to the commands. Once they understand them, moving onto sequences and variable reinforcement is key to having a dog eager, happy, and committed to performing.

For the whole process on how to achieve this be sure to check out the New Puppy, Now what course showing Garmr learning them.

Here's a quick snippet on teaching your puppy/dog to stand. We want the feet to not move, we want the butt to kick up independently of the front legs. Then progress from there. The important key for all motion commands is "Command" - Then body help!

10/11/2023

Garmr motions from his BH. I thought he did pretty good, minus his slow sit to stand anticipating getting the ball.. ;). Trial tip, end up with the dog back into basic position sitting to complete the exercise to salvage some points. So back to long 30 paces away after sit, pretending to grab ball, but have him stay in the sit until heeling again to reward.

Articles: Speed as with motions comes with clarity. Article = platz command. I teach a “show me” off the track, but when adding into the track I’ll do article tracks 10 articles in a row, to get the reps in. The first article he was slow so I helped with verbal. The next articles are all on him. You’ve got to be careful you’re not handler helping that your not aware of. Changing leash tension, holding your breath, reaching into your pocket etc.

After indications you want the dog to be calm and settled. Not fidgeting looking at article/ ground back to handler. So before the restart I wait patiently and mark abd feed gif his head forward, calm, and ready to hear the track command.

This track my restarts went straight because I wanted to be sure where my articles were and to practice standing then tracking, not launching. We’re still training it, so it’s not smooth yet. However I recommend turning 1-2 steps right after the articles so dogs don’t get in the habit of launching straight.

Last article I thought was false indication…. But when it’s trained solid you end up with intelligent disobedience and refusing to track because he’s doing it right. My bad, not the end of the world, just try not to make it a habit! :). Not every track goes perfect.

Being able to fine tune the drive level in the dog while tracking is key. Too much drive you get mistakes; over shooting corners and articles, too fast, casting, speeding up after corners etc. Too much control, the dog might not have enough in the tank to keep tracking when’s it’s difficult. The biggest thing for me is the dogs working independently and they gain confidence through successful problem solving and repetitions. People get too worked up on the dog in “Drive”but overdo it and make their dog out of control.

This track there’s no food for 20ish paces to an article. I’m starting to teach the trial picture. You’ve got to teach the dog to track no food to minimum 100 paces to first article. The reason I see dogs fail the most is on the first leg, the dogs look back to handler and are like “there’s no food” and the dog gives up.

Restarting after toys on the track, I typically put a few pieces of hot dog right where they picked up the ball, not always though. Play a little tug/fetch, bark at me, then “sook” means to get back to work. This really helps teach the dog “sook” means to start looking for the track and find it, in case trial day things aren’t 💯 points and you need to give another command out on the track.

Then beginning of the track.. lots and lots of cross tracks, letting himself problem-solve and concentrate to find the track on his own to build confidence. If he were to take a wrong track more than half body length, that’s where I’d step in and correct him.

In this video, I go over a simple and useful tip for playing fetch with your dog, and not getting your hand's bit. I teach a "Go" command to turn around and chase the ball/tug I'm throwing.

Fussing over the years! Solid fussing and attention is the building blocks to V obedience routines. If the dog isn’t paying close attention and in drive during heeling, the rest of the exercises will start to falter the longer they go without a reward.

The video quality sure has improved over the years. ;)

In this video, I will be tackling, Teaching Fronts! This is a quick video on the process I take to teach my dogs fronts. Happy Training!

Garmr’s off leash free heeling from his BH. Reminder… there’s a halt at the end when you get back to the start, before you turn around down field for your motions. Also, make sure to re-read the rules before trialing if it’s been awhile, so you don’t miss stuff. :) We we’re the first dog to go, so I didn’t hear it in the critique from dogs before me before getting on the field or we would have halted correctly if I’d learned before we got out there.

15/10/2023

Garmr back to tracking. We just got his BH and getting back at training for real now. Tracking Tip of the day, classical conditioning calm focus to the start flag. Set it up and reward calm behavior. Don’t let the dog be hectic and out of control.

-6-8 Sessions A Day
-1-3 Mins Long
-Stop Sessions When The Puppy Wants It the Most

PRAISE WHEN THEY ARE DOING THE CORRECT WORK! Not after they complete the exercise.

For more topics and more in-depth information be sure to check out the full course on my website. Bring your puppy along for this training course that will cover everything you need to know from week 8 through 12 months old.

You want to make sure you're reacting to the puppy pushing you, and you praise them for working not for being done with the behavior. Don't be bribing the dog to pay attention, you want to teach the puppy to be demanding attention!

Using the jump poles on the hurdle is a great way to be really clear with your dog to make sure they cleanly jump and clear the hurdle trial day. In training I'm always having my dog jump 3-5 inches over the trial height of the hurdle, so on trial the muscle memory is really high and they clear it.
