About the Avian and Exotic Pet Service
The Avian and Exotic Pet Service at Carolina Veterinary Specialists strives to provide the highest quality and latest updates in avian and exotic pet medicine. Our department is based in our Huntersville animal hospital, although we see patients once a month (usually on Fridays) in our Matthews location. We see patients every weekday apart from Thursdays. The Service opens at 8:00 am and closes at 5:00 pm. After-hours emergency services are provided by the Avian and Exotic Pet Service only for existing clients. However, several of our emergency veterinarians are trained to see exotic pet emergencies (we strongly suggest that you call first if you feel you have an exotic pet emergency). There is an additional fee for after-hours and work-in emergencies.
The Avian and Exotic Pet Service provides state-of-the art services for exotic pets, including a dedicated exotics ward, 24-hour nursing care, on-site computed tomography (CT), on-site diagnostic ultrasonography, endoscopy, and more. The Service collaborates regularly with other specialty services at Carolina Veterinary Specialists, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Oncology.
Dr. Lauren Powers is the service head of the Avian and Exotic Pet Service. She grew up in Vermont and attended Boston University for her undergraduate studies. She became board certified in avian medicine (ABVP) in 1997, and became board certified in exotic companion medicine (ABVP) in 2012. She worked in general veterinary practice in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for 5 years before joining the staff at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in 2002. She is a past president of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) and a past vice-president of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV). She has authored more than 30 scientific research manuscripts, clinical review papers, and book chapters. She has received numerous awards and honors, and lectures frequently locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
