Wisdom...

I think humans get arena sour, too.

They just don’t always realize it.

The frustration that builds with the perpetual need to produce a result with horses.

The pressure of that upcoming show.

Drilling the horse on “boring” behaviours repeatedly in the arena.

Seeing unwanted behaviour because of it. Throwing fuel on the fire by being impatient, stressing the horse and creating “arguments.”

Exiting the arena, removing the walls and barriers and giving yourself some different scenery can be healing.

Putting yourself out in nature where there’s lots to look at, much to be appreciative of and far more novelty.

It’s good for the human AND the horse.

Build the horse’s confidence through slowly exposing them to new things, helping them become more resilient as they learn to navigate new environments and self regulate while doing so.

Build fitness and ability on different terrain, with longer and slower distances. Lots of sweeping turns and bends. Not just drilling the horse in a small area on small circles.

Watch how the novelty and more relaxed approach makes it easier for both yourself and your horse to self regulate.

Preserve their joints by backing away from the exercises that are heavy in circles or fast turns.

When you eventually return to the arena, you may find that you AND the horse are both refreshed and ready to go.

The last few horses I’ve started under saddle, I’ve started without access to an arena.

This meant that first rides took place in an open field or on trails.

There’s nothing more humbling than the knowledge that you need to get it right or risk being on an out of control horse in a huge space.

The smaller margin for error makes you work harder to prep for prevention.

And you get a better horse because of it.

A horse who isn’t soured by the redundancy of the arena AND who has adjusted to working in novel environments.

Add some novelty to your training sessions by changing things up.

Step out of the arena, expand your comfort zone.

"HAY is for HORSES, STRAW is for STRAYS!" 😻

On your next trip to the garden center or farm store, pick up a bale of straw! It's inexpensive, will last you a long time and the perfect bedding for your cat shelters so the kitties stay warm and cozy overnight. Always use STRAW -- and here's why:

✅STRAW is tough, thick, dry leftover stalks from crops. It's lightweight and golden in color. Straw has a hollow center which makes for great insulation. Straw will reflect body heat back to a cat as well as repel moisture.
🛑 Hay is green and heavy. Hay is typically used to feed animals, like horses. It absorbs moisture, making it damp, cold and uncomfortable for cats and has the potential to get moldy. Do NOT use hay (or blankets) for bedding in outdoor cat shelters.

👉For an easy way to remember which to use…
"Hay is for Horses, Straw is for Strays."

You can easily find and buy bales of STRAW inexpensively at your local co-op, farm/ag supply store, local garden center/nursery, Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware or local landscape supply. Farmers who sell pumpkins often sell bales of straw, too.

Thanks for keeping those outdoor kitties warm and comfortable!

Perceptions

The wolf never eats corpses, neither animals, nor people; it spends its whole life with a partner, it does not mate with its mother or sister; it is a monogamous animal, it does not deceive.
If a partner dies, the wolf remains alone; it knows its young ones well: it is the only animal that helps their parents after deep old age and brings them food.
When you kill a wolf, it looks you in the eye until its soul gives out; it's 25% smarter than the smarter dog, and it's the only animal that doesn't obey training, they say...
*sometimes the bad thing in the movie is not how they portray it.

Our Story

Peace for Ponies a Program run by Earth Lodge LTD is a 501C non profit that saves animals. Our goal is to teach compassion. We specialize in pregnant miniature horses and donkeys but will take in most animals if we have funds and room. We allow our rescues time to heal and find them amazing homes. Here are some we have saved

https://creativespirit.smugmug.com/Other-7/Those-we-have-saved/

Our future goal is to save babies taken from moms that ship and find them forever homes. We intend to continue to get others involved in animal protection and preserving the earth. We teach compassion through our FB page and have volunteers who grow and learn from the rescues. In the future we would love to be able to have a larger facility, presently we have two stalls which limits us but as you can see we have saved many. We also help place many animals without ever seeing them. Join us as we work to save more.
