Now that the dust has settled down and sleep has been caught up on. Time to feature another awesome breeder that donated to our program! Thank you Neanen Show Barrows for your continued support!

Scott and Kristi provided the following about their farm:

Neanen Show Barrows started in the middle 70’s. Phil and Linda Neanen started the Spotted Hog Operation. It was a family operation, which included Scott and his two sisters. Our Spotted Sow herd consisted of 100 sows. Phil and the family also farmed around 1500 acres. Phil was a Pioneer Salesman. The Spot Operation continued to grow throughout the years. We showed nationally and had multiple champions. There would be trailers lined up down our driveway just waiting to get in to see our stock.
We were very proud of the top-quality genetics that we produced. Dad would always say we have to keep them good and can always do better.

The years of 2005 thru 2009 were the worst years of our operation. In May 2005, Scott’s son, Chase Robert Neanen passed away due to an accident on the farm. Chase was 4 years old. Phil’s health was failing at the same time of Chase passing. R. Phillip Neanen, 64 years old passed away in 2009 due to Alzheimer’s. The spotted hog operation at this time our family decided to sell out. After many life changes in 2010, we started to build the Spot Operation again. Neanen Show Barrows was coming back! Scott met Kristi and we started purchasing sows and gilts together. The first spot gilt
purchased was with my good friend Scott Evans. The Double Feature gilt was purchased from the Hartman Family. We decided to build around her. From then on, we have continued to build our herd and maintain the highest quality of the Spot breed.
Neanen Show Barrows is very dedicated to the Spot Breed. We are fortunate enough to have Top Boar Genetics close to us. NSB wants to continue to make the Spot breed better!

We are very proud to be able to donate a Spot gilt to the youth! We love working with the kids! We spend our available weekend time with the kids. These families are dedicated to raise our spots and we are right there with them to help any chance we get.

Thank you for this opportunity!

The Ohio State Fair is Coming!! Our program would to like take some time to recognize our awesome breeders that have donated to the youth. First up Tom Trowbridge from Trowbridge Spot Farm. Tom writes:

Trowbridge Farms (Trowbridge Spot Farm) was founded in 1942 by my Grandfather Kenneth Trowbridge.

During the late 1930's my Grand father (Kenneth ) was a Hampshire herdsman and also helped the Fraker family with their Spotted herd.

Due to the declining health of Mr. Fraker, Grandpa Kenneth, and his Father Willard (my Great-Grandfather) helped manage this Spotted herd for the Fraker family, creating Trowbridge-Fraker which started the TF herdmark!!

Then in 1942 the Fraker family gifted their Spotted herd to Grandpa Kenneth.

Kenneth and his wife Louise continued to raise Spotted hogs and milk Holstein cows while raising their family. Which included 4 daughters and a son James (my Dad) so in the mid 1950's Kenneth Trowbridge and Son. Their main focus was to produce the High Quality Genetics and share those Genetics to better your herd!!! While still raising a few Hampshire along with the Spots, Kenneth allowed Jim to make more of the daily decisions and allowed the addition of some Yorkshires in the 70's and Duroc's in the early 80's.

During the 80's my Dad got married to my mom, Sherry, and had 2 sons (Tom and John) shortly after the birth of his youngest son the Duroc sows were sold. But the family continued to Milk cows and Raise Reg. Purebred Spots, Hamp's and York's. Selling breeding and show stock across the country. This included having yearly bred gilt sales and club pig sales.

Fall of 1992 Grandpa passed away after a long battle with emphysema . The cows were all sold in 1993 and Jim started to cut back on sows and work off the farm. During that time the focus remained to promote Spotted hogs and the other breeds were phased out.

March 1999 our family had a farm fire and lost several buildings, our house, farm machinery and all our livestock except for two Spotted Sows. At that time Jim and his Sons had to decide if they were going to weather the storm or call it quits. Dad said it would take more than that to stop raising hogs and he continued on.

Jim and his sons started building back a Spotted herd from several well known breeders and rebuilt buildings to start back over. During this time the Pietrein breed was being utilized within the Spots to create a leaner, heavy muscled hog and to change the show ring industry. We tried some of these newer genetics but weren't overly impressed. That's when we went against the grain and brought back the purity in the Spotted breed. By utilizing genetics from the 1970's and 80's and breeding to the sows that survived the fire.

Our dedication to preserving the Spotted breed with time tested genetics gave us the opportunity to sell breeding stock that was total outcrossing to the modern day trend. Also during this time we could promote the breed with a higher purity genetic line and helped several young breeders get started in the Spotted breed thru the Donor Gilt program. Thru my Dad's dedication and integrity to the Spotted breed he was awarded the Spotted Distinguished Service Award (Hall of Fame) in 2014. Dad continued to raise Spotted hogs until his untimely death April 25 2017. He had given a phone call to a young man the evening before his death and offered him "Pick of the Farm". My Dad was very passionate about the breed and the youth that wanted the experience to raise Spots. This was shown with the numerous number of gilts he had given to this program. After Dad passed away I took over the farm with my wife Heather and our 4 month old son Tucker. We have welcomed 2 more sons Tyce and Triggs. Along with increasing our sow herd and adding back all the breeds that my Grandfather and father had raised during my younger years. I have continued to raise Spotted hogs like the generations before me which has allowed our farm to maintain the highest % purity of any Spotted hogs in the country. In 2022 I was elected to the National Spotted board of directors, and this Summer was elected Vice President of the Spotted board of directors and also the Executive board.

We are a Proud supporter of the youth thru 4-H, FFA and the Ohio Donor Program. Giving numerous children a fresh start in the Spotted breed. With a foundation female to build a sow herd from and a long lasting relationship in the Spotted breed.

Our focus is still the same since 1942 "To produce the highest quality and most productive breeding stock, and share those genetics to better your program."
