4 ways to fulfill your dog on your walks ⬇️⬇️

1. Confidence building! Find some obstacles to help build confidence. I like to find obstacles that gradually increase in size - like the ledges in the video - to build a dog’s confidence incrementally so that the difference in the size of the jump up on the ledge does not overwhelm the dog.
2. Work on environmentals. I like to go out and find some unnatural surfaces (such as the grate in the video), and work on the dog getting used to (and not being afraid of) uneven surfaces or surfaces that may be uncomfortable.
Side note: playgrounds are a great place to work on numbers 1 and 2, above!
3. Teach the dog to use its nose. Take a toy and throw it in some high grass and make the dog go find the toy with its nose. This can be helpful in working with reactivity as well - teaching the dog to rely on its nose rather than its eyes is a helpful exercise in working on a dog’s reactivity.
4. Build engagement through play. When first starting out at this, I like to find a quiet area on the walk to play with the dog! I wait for the dog to make eye contact with me, then I initiate play and we have fun! Once the dog shows willingness to engage in the quiet area consistently, I’ll slowly move to more distracting and stimulating areas and repeat the process.
