Hello everyone!

2024 was a busy season and very exciting season for several incredible families.

Ferret season is over for us here at SteelCrest.

We are still taking applications to start our waitlist for 2025.

Many exciting new projects will be coming up as well besides our ferrets with some species returning to our breeding program here.

Stay tuned !!!

This is why descenting is unnecessary. Ferrets have a unique smell and it doesn’t come out of their butts ! 😂

I know some of you had reached out for availability.

We were pretty sure we were done for the season.

What I thought was a false pregnancy was in fact a real pregnancy.

So we are very excited.

Mom was moved into her maternity room as usually but I still was doubtful.

So if you are interested in a kit from our litter , and have not been added to our waitlist yet.

Please contact me.

22/05/2024

***please read through our page at all of our informational posts before contacting us***

We are accepting applications on the current litter of kits!

Message me for an application to get on our wait list ❤️

Only boys available.

18/05/2024

We are still accepting a few more applications for 2024.

I have reached out to most that have been approved, most got back to me that they are still interested in a kit this year and have been able to be matched with amazing kits.

A lot have not.

So if you are still interested in a kit for 2024 and have gotten the application link but not sent it in. Please do so.

Thanks!!

Good morning all!

Breeding season has been very slow.

Only two litters so far but two absolutely amazing litters so far.

I wanted to come on here and make a post as to why we haven’t really been posting updates as we normally would on this platform.

Well unfortunately our photos have been
Getting stolen by scammers and being shared to scam people that are trying to get ferrets from breeders.

So in an attempt to not let our photos get stolen and hurt people we are using this page as an informational platform and a way to contact us to get on our application wait list group.

That is a private group and I require an application and interview process to be invited on to that group to view updates and learn about the litters we have.

It’s sad how we have to make these changes but I am hopeful that we can stop scammers just a little by not adding updated kit photos.

We will try to do Facebook lives though. We want to assure people that we are real.

If you are looking into getting a ferret from a breeder. As for videos, pick up the phone and call us, email us any questions you want to know. I will absolutely do FaceTime as well.

All ways to ensure that we are real !

Have an amazing day!

27/03/2024

Just doing a roll call.

I have many many many applications in.

Not everyone that puts in an application is still interested in a kit for various reasons.

To help me out a bit and streamline my new waitlist system,

If you are interested in a kit in 2024 please send me a follow up interest message.

Thank you all!!

Hot Topic:

We get contacted regularly for two ferrets when people want to get their first ferret.

As social as ferrets are two at once is usually not the best idea for new ferret owners. Even myself as a breeder space out when I bring in new animals to my home.

Why do I say this? Bonding time is extremely important with ferrets and their new family. As ferret kits naturally would leave their family when mom says it’s time , now is their time to bond to their new family member, new humans. We do our best to constantly socialize our babies with handling, noises, nail trimming, bathing, litter training. A lot goes into making well balanced ferret kits.

Having two kits at the same time in a new household will create a bond sometimes too strong amongst the two and they may not want to interact with their new human which can cause behavioral issues.

So our policy has grown to be that we only allow one kit to go to a new home at a time. There are very few and far between cases where this policy can be changed for certain situations. Such as larger families that are extremely experienced with ferret care.

Other than that our policy is in place to ensure the best experience for our kits and for our new homes.

Good morning to everyone!

Breeding season has officially begun and girls are starting to show signs of coming into season little by little.

We are still reviewing applications as well as accepting them.

I will be working on an updated list of approved applicants this week so that I have a list to start letting people know as litters are born that may possible be a fit for what they are looking for based on their applications and interviews we have done over time.

Please keep in mind that we do not work on a first come first serve basis. We match each kit appropriately based on the needs of each kit and the experience of each family we speak to.

We are also not a pet store and do not give tours. So please be aware that we do replace those in person experiences with lots of pictures and even FaceTime videos or Facebook lives. This is to give our moms and kits their privacy and to keep them healthy since the kits are not vaccinated until they are a bit older around 10 weeks of age which is when they are able to leave us and go on to their new homes.

Our price this year for standard kits will be 425.00

If you are interested in our angora or low percentage hybrids please private message us for that pricing information.

The colors we work with are Albinos, Sable points, Black sables, Champagnes. With the possibility of Black Roan mitts and Chocolates.

We are also a 100% raw diet breeder. We only use a raw diet and expect our kits to stay on a balanced raw species appropriate diet their entire lives. Your commitment to have a species that is an obligate carnivore is important, and that you understand their needs for this to stay healthy. If this isn’t something your experienced with we are here to help guide and coach you along the way. But it is a must in our book.

If you have any questions at all or are interested in an application please feel free to message us. Be patient and we only answer messages before 8pm. Please be respectful of our day and what time you message us. If it’s later please email instead at [email protected] .

Thank you !

𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐃𝐀𝐘: Bedding & Toy Safety

Doesn’t Marty look totally chill in his cozy bed?

Ferrets are little fluffy balls of energy and curiosity, and every single one has slightly different “idiosyncrasies''. There’s one thing that most ferrets have in common, at least to some degree: destructiveness!

Ferrets love to dig, chew, and scratch. Digging behavior in particular is deeply ingrained in them- it’s one of their oldest instincts. They will dig at the floor, at your sofa, and often, they will dig at their own bedding & toys. This behavior can lead to dangerous situations where they may become entangled in torn fabric or swallow pieces of bedding (or pieces of rubber/plastic from chewing on toys).

There are lots of warnings put out in the ferret community about avoiding specific brands of fabric toys and fabric beds, but we would like to stress that what brands a fabric item is matters very little… ferrets are totally capable of destroying even high end, well made beds, hammocks, and fabric toys. We should not become complacent simply because we invested in items that we see as well made. If ferrets can burrow through your own bed’s mattress, they can certainly burrow through most high quality pet beds.

Items with specific dangers should still be avoided all together- never offer your ferret rubber toys or chewable plastic toys. Pieces of rubber and plastic can EASILY cause a life threatening intestinal blockage. Blockages may require a surgery costing thousands of dollars, with no guarantee your ferret will survive. It is better to simply avoid highly dangerous materials in the first place.

While rubber and plastic items are easily avoided, bedding is something that is almost always present in a ferret’s living space. By bedding, we are referring to fleece blankets, plush pet beds, hammocks & hanging beds, fabric shelf liners, etc. Ferrets often dig at their beds and hammocks, and over time they may tear through the outer layer of fabric. When this happens, they are able to dig their way inside the item. They may become entangled and stuck, especially if the inner lining of the item is made of satiny material that shreds into strings and threads. At this point, a ferret can become traumatized, seriously injured, and there have been cases of ferrets dying, trapped inside a fabric toy or bed.

How can we prevent this from happening? Daily inspections! Regaurdless of where you purchased your fabric items, regardless if they are home made or from a commercial business, regardless if they seem to be high quality or lower in quality: check them EVERY day.

Things to look for:

• Thinning spots
• Small or large holes
• Loose threads
• Tears
• Indications of digging or chewing
• Any other form of damage

Once you discover that an item has been damaged, you should throw it away. I know that this can be difficult to do, especially if you are on a tight budget. However, throwing away a damaged $20 bed may save you from a $3000 vet bill future.

Hello ferret fans and potential ferret homes!

I have had an influx of families contacting me for ferret kits this time of year.

Just as a reminder that ferrets are seasonal breeders. Meaning they have certain times of year that is more prevalent for this species to breed.

In our part of the country we typically see our Jill’s (female ferrets ) come into cycle around the spring/summer months. Winter is their normal time to gain weight and slow down for the season.

So very rarely will you see available kits from us.

So please be patient we are working on who will be paired with who for the 2024 season.

We have some exciting crosses planned.

If interested please contact us for an application for the 2024 season.

Thanks!!!

These boys have been adopted!

As a breeder we also hold true that we are here to protect all ferrets. Which is why we are very involved in rescue.

Including those produced by ferret mills and sold through pet stores.

Today we opened our home to three rescues that need our attention and will eventually need a proper forever home. They have only been here about 30 minutes and are enjoying it here already.

These boys will be getting a nice spa day and getting up to date on their vaccines while they quarantine here with us and transition them into a better diet.

They will get lots of love!

If anyone has the heart to open up their home to these boys and offer them a forever home. Please contact me via email [email protected]. With Rescues as the subject line.

Obligate Carnivore... What does it mean? Professor Lysander has the answer!

Obligate carnivores are animals that require a completely meat/animal protein based diet. Obligate carnivores lack the anatomy and physiology to properly digest and utilize plant matter. A few examples of obligate carnivores are ferrets, felines, and mink. Here are some of the issues that obligate carnivores face if forced to consume a plant matter inclusive diet:

• They have no flat molars to properly crush plant matter- their teeth are instead designed for slicing through meat and appropriately sized bone.

• They have no salivary amylase to begin the process of breaking down and digesting starches- salivary amylase, or Ptyalin, is an enzyme found in saliva that breaks down the insoluble starch found in foods into smaller, soluble sugar fragments. Obligate carnivores lack this important enzyme and cannot efficiently digest starches because of it.

• Obligate carnivores also lack a cecum to aid in the absorption of plant based foods- the cecum is a developed organ seen in small herbivores like rabbits that aids in the absorption of plant food and aids in the retention of supplements. Because obligate carnivores lack this important component of the digestive system, again, they cannot properly or efficiently digest and utilize plant based foods.

• And finally, when fed a diet containing carbohydrates (plants contain carbohydrates), many obligate carnivores may develop medical issues as a result, such as insulinoma in ferrets or diabetes in cats. Plant based proteins in dry kibble may cause issues as well - though it's still being studied, there is a strong suspicion that pea protein is linked to increasing the risk of kidney & bladder stones in felines, ferrets, and other carnivores.

Obligate carnivores are clearly built to thrive on a diet of exclusively meat/prey- when we choose to have these animals in our lives, it's vital that we provide a species appropriate diet.

A very interesting read and study on how ferrets learn and just another thought for any new owners to remember that ferrets are extremely intelligent and social animals.
