Tis the season to bake! Do you know what's dangerous for your pet to eat?

Here are a few common baking ingredients which are harmful (and potentially fatal) for your pet to eat:

-Chocolate (candy, cocoa powder, chocolate chips, candy coating)
-Bread Dough (any yeasted dough)
-Xylitol (artifical sweetener, often found in peanut butter)
-Raisins (fruitcake, breakfast rolls, granola and more)
-Spices (cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg and more)

Long story short? Don't share your treats with your pet.

Instead, whip up a batch of dog-friendly treats that feature ingredients like flour, oats, pumpkin, yogurt and peanut butter (check the label for xylitol). Try this easy recipe that both you and your pup can enjoy!

Banana Peanut Butter Cookies
-2 ripe bananas
-1 ½ cup quick oats
-⅓ cup peanut butter

Preheat oven to 350F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Mash bananas into a large bowl and add peanut butter and oats. Mix well. Drop mix onto lined cookie sheet by the spoonful. Bake 12-15 minutes.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), early signs of diabetes are important to note and may include:

Excessive water drinking/increased urination
Weight loss (even without a decreased appetite)
Decreased appetite
Cloudy eyes (most common in dogs)
Chronic infections, such as skin or urinary infections

The Canadian Animal Health Institute also notes that “walking or standing in a plantigrade posture (‘down in the hocks’)” is another clinical sign seen in diabetic cats.

We encourage pet parents who have observed these signs in their pets to contact their veterinarian right away. If we notice any of these signs while pet sitting, we will notify clients as well.
