I really wanted to write back in November because I started the No stirrup November challenge, but then it fell through (or rather, drowned) thanks to several weeks of constant rain. Meanwhile, I started my coaching business in October, so in the past 2 months all my time and energy went into that, and whenever I found some free time, I rather biked to go riding than to put something on the blog.
And now we are here in the middle of December, and if I want to be realistic, I know that this is going to be the last post for 2023 because I will be doing everything else in the remaining 2 weeks. So, how is everyone's favourite pony, and how did the year go? Let's recap.
It was a big year for us, because we couldn't close 2022 and greet 2023 together, and I had to settle for a mere walk instead of the traditional New Year's trail. I already knew in January that I was going to move Duhaj out this year because the finances were all in place, so I started the project: researching what I needed to do, who would transport him and for how much, and where he would live. I was lucky because I found an amazing place, my Hungarian vet chipped the horse, and Horse Trans Cargo helped with the transport, so Duhaj arrived in the Netherlands in March, and I became a full owner again.
We had roughly a 1-1,5 years of gap, since besides my Dutch adventures there were also health issues that dictated when and how much I could ride, and my mom who took care of Duhaj 100% after my move couldn't exercise him that much either. For a little pony this is not a problem, he was happily grazing in the pasture, but it also meant that I received him with more fat than actual muscle. Luckily this can be improved, and the next months were about fitting riding together with the weather and the rest of my life.
In September we went on our first Dutch trail ride, which is not exactly like the Hungarian trails, but still outdoors, trees, and of course a lot of bikes, so all in all I'm just happy to have an outside to go to.
In Novemer, to improve my seat and my back muscles, I started the No stirrup November challenge, which got as far as 2-3 rides before the rain killed it completely. This already managed to teach me a lot, however, because once the soreness was gone, I felt quite good, so I want to implement this into the rest of the year. I used my ba****ck pad for this experiment just to do something with it, and I made friends with it, except in canter where the buckles of the dressage girth give me the touch choice between bruising my calves or flying off. I'm going to need either leg protectors or another solution.
Since I lost the stirrup, I thought I'd lose the bit, too, or rather, let's use the hackamore that's also just sitting in my closet. Neither of us can figure out what to do with it, which might change with some more practice, but even the 1 ride I tried it for (again) felt like a waste of time when I would've achieved more with a bit. This is a completely different style that I know nothing about, and it's hard to teach it to the horse when I don't even have the theory down. Overall, I like experimenting with such things, but this so far is a fail.
Currently, Duhaj is very happy, in a separate pen because when he eats, no one else eats. There's a rubber flooring installed underneath one feeder, but it's for nothing if the other 4-5 horses are expelled into the mud because of a fat little pony, so he went to a separate pen. This is not a problem, especially because now we can control his food, so his form is looking quite good.
I went to walk him in-hand the other day on trail just to allow him to spook and snort at his heart's content (it’s been another break in our riding), being glad that he wasn't doing this show under me. I also liked the exercise, though I do bike and clean the pasture regularly. I've been wondering about teaching Duhaj to go beside the bike because the trail roads would support it, and it would be adorable for him to run after me (until he spooks or jumps and makes me fall, which is a theoretical problem I'm still trying to solve).
What are the plans for the future? It's a very good question and I can't, or rather, don't want to answer it, because things never turn out how I plan :D I will start the new year with riding for sure, I will try to regularly get out 2-3 times a week depending on the weather, we haven't been on a trail ride alone yet, and I also want to play more with stirrupless riding. I want to find new things in groundwork because currently it's maxed out, and the newest thing so far is teaching another horse-rider pair about it. Otherwise, 2024 can bring whatever it wants, but only good things!
Since me, the horse, and snow hadn't been in one place, one time since 2021 (and currently it's still 10C out here), I can only wish you a Merry Christmas and a successful, horsey New Year with a few recent pictures. Thank you for following us in 2023 as well and witnessing how we went international. We're coming back with new crazy adventures next year!
