Big THANK YOU to all of the Alaska PFD recipients who donated to Ketchikan Humane Society!

WE APPRECIATE YOU.

With the help of your generosity we were able to approve 150 cats and dogs for alteration in 2024! This includes our low-cost SNIP program for families seeking financial assistance and our feral “trap/alter/release” program.

We look forward to continuing our efforts into the new year. ❤️🐾

This pup is a 50 lb pit-mix looking for a new home. His advocate in Hollis reports he is good with kids and other dogs.

Nicknamed “Whitey” - he is not yet neutered but needs a home soon since the weather has gotten cold.

Meleana is listed as a “Sharpei/bulldog” mix. She is a senior and she has absolutely melted my heart. If I didn’t have another senior at home that I’m focused on spoiling Meleana would already be mine.

I don’t know her history with cats or other dogs but her face is irresistible!

Meleana is fixed and can be taken for walks if you want to get to know her better.

I’m just now realizing Tonto the puppy was also adopted!

Here are the remaining pups:

Mixie - great with children, can tolerate other dogs with management and supervision. She has an advocate so ask any questions!

Meleana- old girl, gentle and calm. Attitude toward dogs unknown - energy level good for kids.

Prince - beautiful, big, playful bundle of energy. Very treat-responsive - but needs some training. He can be a lot on a walk - but doesn’t necessarily pull. He just likes to throw and pounce on sticks and check everything out.

Kia - small white husky mix. I don’t know much about her.

Goose - a handsome black dog. He needs to be an only dog - but he too has an advocate so ask questions!

Come visit and walk! Monday - Saturday, 10 AM - 5 PM.

Shelter Update - Nose Boop Edition.

Lots of dogs at the shelter. Even the nervous new ones come to the gate for some attention and love.

Mixie, Ace and Ceder are believed to be dog-socialized.

Koko comes with limited free professional training from a trainer who has worked with her in the past - this is an incredible opportunity. (The shelter does not have information about this - contact Ketchikan Humane Society after adoption it you want to take advantage of the mentoring.)

Ace’s previous owner is available to answer questions about his personality and quirks.

If you’re looking - one of these dogs might be the right fit for you and your family!

Koko has been adopted!!

Koko has an advocate!

Revival K9 has worked with Koko and is making an amazing offer to the person who can provide the right home for her.

From Revival K9:

“Koko is a pup that I previously trained through a board and train program.

I would love to see her find a new home and if anyone is willing to adopt her, I will provide free training services to help with her transition.

She would thrive best in a home with no other dogs. “

Ace has been adopted!

Ace has an advocate who can answer any of your questions. Just ask!

Ace was obtained as a pup in March of 2021 and was raised with a Corgi and a cat. He received regular vet care and a lot of love and attention throughout. He’s is a Rottweiler Husky mix!

He’s a big guy but he is a lover. He is house trained but perhaps a bit spoiled. He could benefit from some basic manners training.

Ace was surrendered because his owner is no longer able to care for him. He is extremely uncomfortable in the shelter and not showing his true nature. Aside from some resource guarding - he has no hidden gotchas and the sooner he can find his new people the better.

If you’re interested but have questions please ask! Knowing the history of a rescue can be super helpful.

ADOPTED!

Two new nervous pups at the shelter.

I’m going to see if the shelter can make a room available to meet dogs indoors. Someone could have the opportunity build some trust with the dog in a manner different than taking them for a walk. (Plus not all dogs are altered and eligible for walks. )

I will let you know how my efforts go!

No big long narrative on animal quirks this week. Its winter. It’s dark. It’s raining. Why not visit the shelter simply as “something to do” and help socialize the animals. Cuddle and play with cats. Walk dogs around the cemetery.

The shelter is open 10 AM - 5 PM (closed for lunch 12:00 - 1:00) Monday through Saturday. *Dogs that are not yet fixed cannot be walked but you can visit with them in the outdoor run.

Loving on shelter animals is good for the soul and amazing for the animal.

Just come visit.

PS Tony was NOT adopted. He was in the back room recovering from being neutered- but he’s back now and holds the pole position in the cat room and isn’t afraid to tell you his feelings.
