With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, we would like to remind everyone of some important information to keep your pets safe this holiday season.

Keep the Thanksgiving feast on the table! While it can be tempting to want your pet to feel like a part of the celebration, many of the delicious foods we enjoy at Thanksgiving can be harmful/toxic to pets.
- Turkey/Ham/Other fatty foods can cause pancreatitis, a painful and potentially life-threatening condition.
- Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats.
- Many other common ingredients such as raisins, onions and garlic are also toxic to our furry friends

Be sure to keep Thanksgiving trash away from pets where it absolutely cannot be reached. Another common pet emergency during the holiday season is intestinal foreign bodies caused by ingesting bones/other garbage. Without intervention, a foreign body could cause death.

We hope that everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Tomorrow is Halloween! Here are some tips to keep your furry friends safe this Holiday.

1. Keep Halloween candy safe and out of reach from your pets! Chocolate, Xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in many sugar-free candies and gums), and other common candy ingredients are toxic to pets.

2. Keep Halloween decorations and costume pieces out of reach from pets. Ingesting foreign material can lead to intestinal blockages or cause choking (this is a big concern for cats with string!)

3. Keep your pets indoors. All of the hustle and bustle of trick-or-treaters can put stress on your pets.

4. Never leave a costumed pet unattended. While dressing your pet up for Halloween can be fun, it is important that the costume fits appropriately and to monitor them while wearing it to avoid injury.

If you are dressing your pet up this year, please share a picture with us in the comments! We hope you have a safe and happy Halloween! Enjoy some photos of our pets celebrating the holiday!

We understand that vet visits are expensive and often times unexpected. Here at Silver Birch we offer two different payment options if you are unable to cover your pet's bill in full at time of service.

Scratchpay: You can apply right from your phone, and finding a plan does NOT affect your credit score.

CareCredit: CareCredit is a medical credit card that once approved, can be used for a wide range of care facilities.

Please be aware that our standard exam fee is $150. Any further diagnostics or medications your pet may need are an additional cost. Prior to any diagnostics, your technician will provide you with an estimate.

All payments are due at time of service. If you are working with limited funds, please let our receptionists or technicians know so that we can do our best to work with you and provide the best care for your pet!

We would like to raise awareness about the importance of using YEAR-ROUND flea prevention in both dogs and cats (Indoor AND Outdoor!).

Live fleas observed on the skin of your pet only represent around 5% of the fleas that are living in your environment. You may also notice "flea dirt" which looks like black dandruff throughout your pet's fur. This is digested blood from adult fleas and is a great indicator that your pet has fleas.

Fleas can cause more damage to your pet than just itchiness. They can cause potentially serious problems that we can treat here at Silver Birch such as:

Flea Allergy Dermatitis- Redness, scabs, irritated skin cause by an allergy to flea saliva.
Infection- Fleas can spread bacterial and parasitic infections that can affect pets AND humans, such as tapeworms!
Anemia- A severe flea infestation can cause anemia and even death due to blood loss, especially in young animals.

The most effective flea preventatives are veterinary prescriptions. These medications are often prescribed at your pet's annual exam. Please contact your general practitioner to start your pet on a preventative today!
