Dogs are continually renewing the air flowing through their nose to refresh the scents they smell, somewhat like a human taking a second or third look. Humans stink. The human armpit is one of the most profound sources of odor produced by any animal, even if you use deodorant; our breath is a confusing melody of smells; our ge****ls reek. Small wonder that dogs try to sniff every nook and cranny of a human's body

Update on Dahra and her current fear period.
She is testing the grass every step to make sure bugs don't fly out.
The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own.
Benjamin Disraeli
"The food appropriate for dogs is more like that of man then of sheep, for they are fed on scraps and bones rather than on grass and leaves." Res Rusticae By Marcus Terentius Varro (37 BCE)
So, the question is, does training a dog as though it was a wolf really have merit? Shouldn't a dog be considered from the viewpoint of it's evoluation from the wolf and not it's ancient history?

(HealthDay) -- Pain may be the cause of sudden, unexplained aggression in dogs, a new study says.
Creating a dog that actually wants to listen to you over the call of the wild sounds like the stuff of fairy tales for many of us. However, while the choices a dog makes in a given situation will always be governed by many different factors, looking at the information science gives us on the mechanics of choice gives us an insight into understanding our dog's behavior and at the same time provides tools for changing or maintaining the choices that they are currently making. While individuals come with different motivational levels, the choices all dogs make can be weighted in our favor with good training decisions and two way communication.
When spending time outdoors with your dog, make sure to actively engage with him. Participate in activities together like playing fetch or practicing obedience commands. This interaction helps your dog understand that being outside means focusing on you.
If you get distracted by checking emails or social media for long periods, your dog may start following his own interests instead of yours. It's important to align your goals and work together as a team to achieve off-leash reliability. Remember, if you got a dog for companionship, then be a true companion to them.
I was reminded of this when Dahra and I went into the dog park this morning and there were no balls to throw. So I had to come up with other games that kept her focus on me. She is off leash in the fenced in area and I want her to learn that when there is no leash, she focuses on me and does stuff with me.

I don't force my dogs to accept other dogs' rudeness or aggression, I don't train them to ignore when some other dog attacks. They are allowed to make their own choice whether to defend or walk away. As a result, they will bark, bark, bark, maybe lunge once, and then walk away. They have never been in a fight, no matter how aggressive the other dog was. The moral is - let your dog be a dog. If they've been raised knowing the social signals of their own species, fights just don't happen.
Just like training, keep your play sessions short and frequent rather than long and exhausting. A few minutes at a time are more than enough. Within that play session, do a lot of breaks, keep the actually play going for 30 seconds or less. This method of play keeps your dog interested because he learns that a break in play doesn't mean the end of play. When you do a long play session without frequent breaks, your dog learns that you only play for awhile and then walk away. Just like variable reinforcement, short, frequent play sessions will keep your dog engaged.

It is not always physical exercise that keeps a dog from inappropriate behavior. Many dogs become aroused with too much exercise and don't know how to calm down. These dogs end up destroying your couch or digging through the dry wall. Nose work, balance and coordination work, circus tricks, brain games - all work to create a dog who is calm and focused, can think through problems and can concentrate on what is important.

Not knowing is nothing to be ashamed of. The issue occurs when irrational thoughts and behaviors take over in the absence of knowledge.

Most of us have been conditioned since we were babies to greet every dog we see. We do it with words and pats on the head and a sort of excited energy. Most of my clients start out with this same excited energy when training their dogs.
If you watch dogs (balanced dogs), however, they rarely greet each other by patting on the head, grabbing the fur, talking and squealing like a child. They are calm and silent. Even a reactive dog, if it's not aggressive reactive but just excited reactive, once it gets close to the other dog, shuts it's mouth and just starts sniffing
Every once in a while, try to pet a dog without making a sound. When you pet a dog in a calm manner and without making a sound, you’ll notice that they will respond to your touch in a much calmer way.
Dogs and people have been co-existing for thousands of years. You'd think in that time that the communication between dogs and humans would be passe. But it's not. Whether or not it's because humans are too arrogant to learn to communicate with another species or because dogs are "just animals", humans are not very good at reading their dogs.
