Save-A-Vet Military & Law Enforcement Working Dog Rescue & Support

Save-A-Vet.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization set up to provide a comfortable atmosphere where Military and Law Enforcement working animals can live out the remainder of their lives. In addition, our goal is to provide disabled, injured, and retired military and law enforcement veterans with housing and employment to help us care for these "Other Forgotten Soldiers."

It pains us to inform you that Paddy 2 passed away earlier this morning from heart complications. Paddy 2 served in Kabul Afghanistan as an Explosive Ordinance Detection K9. He touched the lives of thousands of soldiers, civilians, children and other fur friends both here and abroad. Paddy 2’s favorite activities were burger nights at the Wheaton VFW every Wednesday, trips to visit and hang out with other military and law enforcement veterans and ball, ball, ball, ball, ball.

Paddy was always eager to meet any new 2-legged and 4-legged friends, would do anything for a ball, cheeseburger or hot dog and just enjoyed being around people. I'm proud to say he is in a place now where his pain is gone, knowing we gave him the best life a veteran of his statue could have. To my friend and brother Paddy, you will be missed.

****NOTICE**** We have been receiving hundreds of phone calls regarding MWD's being left in Afghanistan. Please be advised, this is NOT what is happening.

These are a mixture of private contractor dogs and civilian pets. Although this is sad, they are not MWD's.

Saveavet rescues MWD's and Law Enforcement K9's only that are deemed unsuitable for adoption via their agency due to liability.

The Military has not left a K9 overseas since the Robby Law has come into effect unless, it is for humane or security reasons such as (terminal cancer, injuries which would be exacerbated during transport, contagious diseases not currently is the USA, etc).

Currently there are no regulations that require contractor companies to bring their dogs home, to adopt them out or standards of retirement. Some contractor companies go above and beyond when it comes to their K9's final retirement and some do not.

These contracts are appointed through your congressional members and senators bills and laws and they are paid very well to perform this service. Well enough to care for their K9's retirement although a lot of them do not.

If you want to help, PLEASE, contact your congressional and senate leaders to help change these laws requiring non-military, private contractor dogs to be brought home at end of service. Contacting us will only slow down our ability to work on our current mission.

Again, although this is sad, this is not the Saveavet Mission. If you would like to read up on the Robby law, you can do so by clicking on the link below. Thank you for your continued support.

https://www.saveavet.org/robby-law-reports

Robby's Law changed it all. Even though military dogs are credited with saving 10,000 lives in the Vietnam war, they were euthanized or abandoned when they became disabled or too old for the rigors of war. ... That all changed when Congress passed Robby's Law in 2000

It is with heavy hearts that we post this update. Our goodest boy ‘Laky’, formerly of the Baltimore County Sheriff, passed away peacefully this morning around 10:30am surrounded by people who loved him. Anyone who met Laky knew that he was a heck of a puppy who loved to play with tennis balls, chase squirrels (much to our chagrin), and eat cheese. Laky lived a full life during his 13 years and always had a doggy grin on his face. You’re at peace now, buddy, across the rainbow bridge with all the tennis balls and squirrels you could ever wish for. Thank you Laky, for always bringing a smile to ours and so many others faces. Good boy, rest easy.

With everything shut down this year there are very few ways to raise awareness and support for Saveavet and our mission. But, by running the organization the right way in the past, we have been able to stay in front of the curve. Since we are 100% volunteer and we own everything cash out, the loss in fundraisers and new support through festivals and such has only hurt us in expanding, but not operating. And, in light of all volunteers, we were just contacted by a new supporter wishing to give back and help spread the word. If you're free this weekend and local to Lake County we would like to extend the invitation below. And with all the restrictions these days and warm weather for one last weekend, who doesn't want to get out and mingle. So, if you're in the area take a look at what Michele Kupcso from Keller Williams has put together.
