I wanted to let anyone who is interested in Rat terrier puppies that I am not breeding anymore. My female contracted an infection during her last pregnancy, which killed the fetuses and required a spay to save her life.
I also want to say there is a breeder here in SW Idaho, Bud Wheeler, that I strongly suggest you avoid at all costs. He owns the male I contacted for stud service, which was a disaster from start to finish. I’ve never met such a rude, stupid, misogynistic man in my life, and hope to never again. He thinks I’m a moron because I always took my pups to the vet for a newborn check for hernias, heart problems and surgical removal of dew claws and tails. He’s willing to hack off dew claws and tails himself, though he’s only been breeding for a few years and has no veterinary training. I’m a retired ICU RN, and could easily give my pups their first shots, but I always wanted to give solid evidence of shots to my buyers, so I had the vet do that, along with an 8 week old exam. Bud does the shots himself, but the buyers have no proof of that. If you get a pup from him, be aware it has likely not been examined by a Vet! In addition, he keeps more dogs in his small house and yard than are permitted by the city, and has 5 or 6 females with one stud, so is churning out litters like a puppy mill.
When my bitch’s pregnancy failed, I asked for a refund of the stud fee, and was called many names. I took him to small claims court and lost because I did not take my girl into the vet to confirm her pregnancy within the time frame we agreed upon. She’d had uneventful pregnancies before, and for COVID reasons, I limited my excursions to essential only, but I should have had an ultrasound done. That’s fair. He countersued me with ridiculous claims, slander, libel, pain, suffering, time off work to come to court, etc etc which he lost. Now I’ve gotten a message from him calling me even more names.
There are many wonderful breeders who are ethical, easy to deal with and knowledgeable. Bud Wheeler is not one of them, I recommend anyone else.
