Due to no fault of our own, the breeds parent club has decided to drop all international breeders from their memberships. We will no longer be listed and vetted by them.

We are greatly sadden and disappointed with this news after years of supporting the club.

We will update once we have more detail information.

Clarification of frequent questions about the clicker.
1. "Can I just use a verbal marker?" You could, but you would be missing out on the exquisite control you get by using a unique sound.
When we say you "power up" a marker, what we mean is you pair it with food enough times so that when the puppy hears the sound of the marker he has an involuntary physiological response to the sound. He will begin to salivate but, more importantly, a whole cascade of hormones is invokes his parasympathetic nervous system which puts him in the "thinking" part of the brain. Very useful for us as dog trainers when we want to gain a puppy's focus for a challenging training session. Once the clicker is sufficiently powered up, you can literally move your puppy to a different part of his brain just by using the clicker.
This is another reason why doing a short training session often is more effective than exercise when trying to settle a dog down...clicker training takes the puppy out of the limbic (fight/flight/play) system and puts him back in the parasympathetic nervous system (calm, digestion).
The problem with using a verbal marker is that your voice is not ever a unique sound. Unless you are truly a vocal actor and can imitate some crazy sound that is never made in conversation normal speech, your voice has some preexisting meaning for the puppy. So you are going to have to counter condition the preexisting meaning first, then condition the new meaning, and then the conditioned nexus will constantly be deteriorating because you use your voice every day.
Sure, your puppy will "get it" if you are extremely skilled with a verbal marker, but it is extremely unlikely that you will get that fine control that you can get with a clicker. With a verbal marker you can let the puppy know he has gotten the "right" answer. With a clicker, you can reach into the puppy and change the way he feels about it.
So, no matter what, powering up some kind of non verbal marker that is a unique sound is worth investing the effort in.
2. "But I don't want to carry a clicker for the rest of my life!" OK this is getting past the territory of Puppy Culture and more into When Pigs Fly but here's the deal.
•You use the clicker to shape behaviors. You progressively raise the criteria until you have the ultimate behavior you want.
•Once the behavior is learned, you thin the reinforcement ratio (randomly start giving fewer and fewer c/t by spreading them further and further apart).
•Next, you move off of using the clicker for that particular behavior.
•At that point, you introduce different kinds of reinforcers (also given randomly) to light a fire under the behavior (if you want a fire lit under it, that is...this is probably more applicable to sport and show dog training but can also have its place in pet training).

So many families and dogs struggle with the effects of separation anxiety, and the symptoms that come along with it. Unfortunately, since the start of the pandemic this spring, dog owners who never noticed problems with their pets before are now seeing the signs of anxiety when left alone.

Many unwanted and dangerous behaviors that accompany separation anxiety are chewing up furniture, blinds, door frames, carpet, and crown molding. Often dogs are soiling in the house or their crate, as well as barking, crying, drooling, howling, and pacing frantically once left alone. Some dogs even bend the bars on a crate, break their teeth, or even escape their kennel.

So, what can we do to contain our dog and keep them and our home safe from injury or destruction? Addressing separation anxiety is a multipronged approach: using a crate, exercise, boundary setting in our day to day actions when we are with our dogs, and training.

If you're not crating your dog, that is usually the first step. If a dog is being crated and breaks out of their kennel, it might be time to invest in a new and stronger kennel. If a dog has escaped a kennel before, they remember the weakness points and will follow that same path again - with even more vigor because they've been successful in their efforts before. (We love Ruffland Kennels, Gunner Kennels, Impact Crates, Zinger Kennels, and Pro Select Crates - just to give a few examples).

Even with an "indestructible or heavy duty kennel," however, it's important that we do some training and lifestyle changes so our dog isn't just in the crate stressing like crazy, but contained. Keeping them secured inside is a first step, but this common dog problem isn't just showing it's face the moment we put them away or leave.

Separation anxiety can easily lead to an "addiction to attention" and we sometimes unintentionally reinforce a dog's dependency on us by the ways we interact with them in our day to day life.

It's extremely important to make the crate a positive place for our dogs by feeding all of their meals and best treats inside. It's also important that your dog has plenty of exercise before being put away, however, no matter how much you walk or run your pup, some of the more severe cases of separation anxiety require a behavior modification plan (and occasionally medication) in addition to physical exercise.

Don't just use the crate when you leave home - help your dog settle in for some crate rest while you are at your house. If they only associate being in the crate with you leaving home, it adds more fuel to their anxiety fire. (This is part of the reason dogs who didn't previously have issues with being home alone have escalated their anxiety so much - the early months of the pandemic changed routines and owners were home much more, and often stopped their crate use routine during the day). We recommend atleast 1.5-2 hours of "day time crate time" if you're working or schooling from home so your dog doesn't getting rusty about staying in their crate while the sun is up!

As you're building up your dog's crate tolerance, make sure you don't send them inside their crate as you leave. Always "tuck" them in 20-30 minutes before you go, and make sure to work on some daily down time inside the kennel and behind bars when you are home, so they aren't always associating you leaving with them being put away. Sleeping inside of the crate is also good, because it allows them to settle and rest there - and prevents the fallout of attachment/dependency that the intimacy of sleeping in bed with you may be reinforcing.

Things that can help a dog settle more in their crate include playing music or having white noise in the area of their kennel so they can't hear all the sounds of the house (and especially your departure cues, like the garage door or your keys jingling). Make sure they don't have view of your EXIT door from home and can't actually see you leave.

Dog appeasing pheromones (they come as a collar or a diffuser) may help your pup adjust to the stress that comes with this change - it's not a fix all, but can certainly help. Try leaving some dirty clothes in the room their crate is in, so your scent doesn't dissipate as drastically when you leave home.

In addition to building positive associations of the crate with their food, it's important to set some lifestyle boundaries with your dog. You can work on the Place Command in your day to day routine with your dog when they aren't in their crate. Place Command teaches impulse control and inclusion, without constantly being underfoot or involved in what you are doing. This allows our dogs how to observe without being your shadow, hopping up every time you move, or constantly being in your personal space.

It's extremely important to cut back on super cuddly/touchy affection with separation anxiety dogs for a while. We need to look at sharing affection and "love" in more structured/less intimate ways like teamwork activities (walks, structured play) and training exercises. Relationship based and teamwork building affection is much healthier for an attention dependent dog than canoodling and cuddling, unfortunately. I know we all get dogs to love on and cuddle, but right now, a dog with separation anxiety needs some clear boundaries so they can have "healthier" ways to be close and interact with you AND be comfortable and able to stand on their own 4 paws without you.

Also, remember not to make a big "to do" about coming and going from the house or when sending them into or releasing them from their crate. Non-eventful exits and arrivals back home help our dog have a smooth adjustment to our presence. When we do a bunch of big goodbyes and hellos we get our dogs all worked up about it! A hyped up dog has an easier time escalating their energy into a barking/crying/meltdown anxiety cycle. Be extremely neutral when coming and going, and remember to put them in to their crate quite a while before you leave and wait a bit to release them once you return (they need to be calm - if you let them out while they bark or fuss, you're unintentionally reinforcing and rewarding that frantic behavior).

Separation Anxiety is not an easy journey to be on with your dog, but the more comfortable you can get them in a kennel the less likely they will hurt themselves or your property. Working with a trainer to help develop more impulse control, an automatic down in the kennel, and to focus on your dog's specific needs will help you, as well! Hang in there ❤
