Beginning Spring 2024, Riverside Canine Center will be offering AKC Fit Dog level one classes. These classes will be helping owners and dogs that are working toward an active lifestyle by teaching foundation exercises safely and using proper form.

The classes are 6 weeks long, the first 5 you and your dog will learn 10 fitness exercises and on week 6 there is an assessment of your dogs ability to perform them. If the criteria is met, the class can be used toward earning your dog an AKC fitness title.

Canine fitness is a fun way to keep your dog mentally stimulated and active. It can increase strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health while helping to reduce the risk of injury.

The class will be limited to 6 teams:
• Dog must be 18 months or older (careful exceptions can be
made for younger dogs)
• Ideal for dogs and owners new to fitness
• Must have completed basic obedience training and dog must be able to focus for an hour class (although there will be short breaks for the dog to rest)
• All of the training is done using positive reinforcement methods; owners should understand basic positive reinforcement, luring, capturing behavior and shaping behavior

**Not intended as physical rehabilitation or behavior modification classes. Dogs recovering from injury cannot attend this class.

Next class will begin: 4/19/24

After a very long break, I am going to bring this page back to life!

A few years ago, I worked on getting certified as a canine fitness trainer through the University of Tennessee. I really enjoy this training for many reason, it can help to prevent injuries for sporting dogs but it is also great for ALL dogs, working or not. It can create a bond between owners and their dogs and helps to keep the dog mentally stimulated and physically active. And, dogs LOVE it!

More recently, I took the classes required to teach AKC Fitness Classes and will begin to teach them at Riverside Canine Center in April. The AKC has a new program for dog owners and their pets to earn titles in Canine Fitness, these classes can be used to work toward that goal or just as a fun way to work with your dog. The classes are very organized and really work to teach foundations of canine fitness in a safe way. Please message me if you have questions.

There are other things I am hoping to get going so watch this space!
