There are a lot of different reasons for your dog's behaviour, intentional vindictiveness or naughtiness isn't one of them.

All behaviours have a function. They serve the individual in some way. Behaviours are the observable actions of any number of underlying environmental and internal processes. Assumptions are not only unhelpful, they are potentially damaging and neglect to address your dogs' reality.

Step back and take a moment to observe what your dog is telling you. If you need help, reach out to a certified and qualified professional.

Important!
When behavior clients walk in the door of my training studio, I give them a slow, exaggerated look away.
Most dogs appreciate it .

Find it

Engaging in a hidden retrieve game with a dog can help to calm and fulfill them, as they use their natural instinct and sense of smell to find the hidden toy or object, providing a fun and rewarding activity.

A hidden retrieve is a game that involves hiding a toy or object for a dog to find using their sense of smell. It can be a fun and rewarding activity for dogs, providing both physical and mental stimulation. Here are the steps to teach your dog how to do a hidden retrieve:

Start with a toy or object that your dog is familiar with and loves, such as a ball or a chew toy.

Begin by holding the toy in front of your dog and encouraging them to sniff it.

Once your dog has had a good sniff, hide the toy in a nearby location, such as behind a piece of furniture or under a cushion.

Release your dog and encourage them to search for the toy. You can use a cue, such as "find it" or "search", to help your dog understand what you want them to do.

When your dog finds the toy, reward them with lots of praise and a treat.

As your dog gets better at finding the toy, you can gradually increase the difficulty by hiding it in more challenging locations or by using multiple hiding spots.

By using their sense of smell to locate the hidden toy, dogs are engaging in a natural behavior that is both mentally and physically stimulating. This activity can help to reduce boredom and anxiety in dogs, and can also improve their overall obedience and responsiveness to commands.

Additionally, the exercise involved in searching for the toy can help to keep your dog physically fit and healthy.
