Not so cute.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Say “YES!” more often.

Theory Thursday - Say YES more often!

Saying 'no' or 'ahah' to your dog's 'bad' behavior won't work. It is also unpleasant for both parties.
Instead, acknowledge good behaviour with a 'yes', folllowed by a treat, praise, or play (whatever your dog finds reinforcing) and your dog will repeat it, allowing you to say 'yes' more often and create good habits.

Be your dog’s advocate
• Never force your dog to accept a stranger’s touch.
• Stand up for your dog if they seem uncomfortable.
• Pay attention to your dog’s body language, signs and signals.
• Be your dog’s advocate or wingman, and keep them safe.
Your dog will quickly learn that you will always be there to help them be comfortable and keep them safe from harm.

HELPING YOUR TEENAGE DOG

Dogs enter the teenage phase around 7 to 12 months and reach social maturity between 24 and 36 months. This will also differ with size of breed also.

During the teenage phase, their brain is still under development, while their body undergoing lots of changes both biological and physical.

At this time they can find it hard to control their emotional responses and lack impulse control. This is when your confident pup can become fearful and reactive to situations they were previously ok with.

So what can we do?
• Keep socialising.
• Attend a teenage dog training class.
• Find a balance between mental and physical stimulation.
• Be aware of their body language.
• Keep it positive – train the behaviour you want instead of punishing for unwanted behaviour.
• Reinforce the effort/their good behaviour.
• Let them make choices if safe and possible.

Of course there are times when we want our dogs to walk beside us. For their own safety, beside a road or in a crowded space, there are times and reasons for the need to keep them close. Walking with a dog on lead is, at its best, a nuanced, collaborative experience; a gentle conversation between two ends of the leash, rather than a battle of wills.

Let's just let our dogs be dogs... at least some of the time, even at those times it's not so convenient for us....

All too often, we expect our dogs to behave a certain way. We train them and mould them to fit into our lives as much as possible. However, if they had a choice, would they always choose the same path for themselves, as we do for them?

Your dog would likely love to get in a muddy puddle or sniff that lamppost for longer. Most dogs would choose to roll in fox poo, and it’s natural for them to eat grass.

As often as possible, we should not only let our dogs practice their natural behaviour but actively facilitate it! Not only is this amazing for their well-being, but it helps to strengthen the bond we share with them if they trust you to let down their guard and be their authentic selves, then what a gift that is for us.

Letting your dog behave as a dog should is perhaps the best thing for them. No pressure, no expectations, no rules.

Just dogs being allowed to be dogs.
